Great bed and shower. On site parking.
Great location and service.
Lovely hotel. Right in the centre of Exeter.
Would stay again
Only stayed one night. Bed comfortable room was nice and clean had a meal in the restaurant which was excellent. Service was very good. Will definitely stay again.
We had a lovely stay at this hotel and couldn’t have asked for more. We liked everything about it, the quaintness, the rooms, bar and restaurant. The staff were very friendly and polite and it was so convenient for the shopping centre. We highly recommend it and wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.
Central location, nice room, great value.
Property was clean and mostly quiet, staff were friendly and incredibly helpful, overall great value for money and I would stay again. The only thing I did not like was the mattress, which was quite uncomfortable due to the springs being old and not working properly (incl there being a dip in the middle of the mattress where I'm guessing the majority of people would have sat).
Great central location and parking very handy behind . Great pub also Hotel is a little tired around the edges
Friendly staff and a convenient stay in a beautiful historic inn
Perfect as always
Place is a bit tatty but does the job. However - room next door is a noisy family with a baby. Walls are thin. Why place us next door in a near empty hotel?
Very good. Bathroom door didn’t look and window was open when we arrived so very cold
Great location and good clean single room
Quirky, interesting building, friendly staff who were pretty busy but still courteous and efficient.Easy to reach dining options and crucially for the elderly, small portions available. Cobbles and dark internal stairs in some areas make it difficult for unsteady walkers. Value for money.
Not the way hotel breakfasts used to be.
Overall the stay was fine, just a few minor issues, check in was smooth and welcoming, Carpark was fine at an additional £5 for the overnight until noon which worked for our stay, the room was bigger than what we expected with the tea and coffee in the room, the toilet seat was not fitted correctly, which was lack of skilled maintenance team as it was clear the brackets holding the seat were the wrong way round, on arrival the window was open and a little cold, so I opened the radiator valve to heat the room as it was closed, but unfortunately there was so much air in the system we only had 1” at the bottom of the radiator to warm the room, this also made the radiator make lots of running water noise, at 3AM I had to turn it off. We prepaid for fry up breakfast with the online check in service, in the morning there was some confusion with the girl as it stated fry up and including Continental selection, she said different, we did get it resolved though the current system in my opinion isn’t working as the adjacent table also had issues with ordering, I think the breakfast menu needs to be replaced with a more simple you can pick 7 items or 9 items if they want to reduce what you get, overall the stay was fine and I would stay again, I’m guessing they are trying to save some money on the breakfast but still trying to please the customer, I would rather pay an extra couple of pounds to have a eat/select what I want as what they have at the moment left me a little disappointed.
Unique venue with cobbled courtyard. Practically in the centre of town. Easy walk to Cathedral Green and car park next door. Rooms were clean and tidy, although no complementary biscuits. Breakfast was good except only 1x cup of tea with English breakfast not a pot or endless tea(s)
Fab stay as always
We come to Exeter 2/3 times a year. We always stay at the White Hart The staff are always helpful and the rooms are always clean and tidy. Anything we need has always been taken care of. It's so close to the centre of Exeter. We shall be back early next year.
White Hart Pub and Hotel Exeter
The White Hart is a very very old establishment, apparently the oldest pub in Exeter, so obviously it has character, the pub itself is warm and friendly, like most pubs today unfortunately there are not many staff around, and what staff there are , they are performing multiple jobs , reception, bar, taking food orders etc, so sometimes it felt like no one was around, but it was ok and once someone was around you got served with a smile, but I would imagine if it got busy as it did suddenly at breakfast when everyone came down at once then things would go slow and wrong, luckily we got down first and was ahead of the rush, the room we had was adequate, only for one night and we got a great deal on it , but it was tired, and in need of a makeover, quite tatty and dark , but warm and dry , it was ok
Good hotel for this price
I am happy with the hotel and room in general. Some repair works needs to be done but it was simple and cosy. Staff was really nice. For the price i paid it was amazing . Thank you
Good value hotel
Very good value for money, staff friendly and helpful, would stay there again.
Excellent value for money. Location, easy to find it close to town. Comfy bed and good.nights sleep. Excellent snd nice.touch with a well priced car park
Great location
Disappointing decline
I have stayed here numerous times over the past 25 years, sadly, over the past 4-5 years the decline has been huge. The quirkiness of the place used to be really appealing, breakfast used to be excellent and the long-time staff really friendly and helpful. Sadly the whole place looks in need of more than a little TLC. The first room we were given was dingy, dark, dirty and had net curtains with big holes. I asked for another room, which was a little better, but still one of the bedside lights didn’t work, the fan in the bathroom didn’t work, the linings to the curtains were in shreds, windows dirty inside and out. We gave the place another chance with this stay, but unless massive changes are made, this will be the last time we stay.
Great stay at a great price. Staff were friendly, the pub was nice & a good nights sleep had. Very happy to recommend & will return.
Room in poor condition
The reception staff were excellent and we were warmly greeted on our arrival. Room had everything we needed and the bed was very comfortable.
I will never use Hotels.com again
This review is targeted at Hotels.com, NOT at the White Hart Exeter itself. We paid the full hotel fee upfront but then when we arrived, we were told by the hotel that the car-park fee was extra. We had to pay for 2 nights’ car parking fee. There was no mention of this on the Hotel.com website. Also, we paid via an mbna card which stated that we would get 5% discount if we used their website to book this hotel. Hotels.com ended this offer on the very day we made payment … and mysteriously re-introduced it the day after payment was made. We will NEVER use Hotels.com again.
The hotel is very central with good facilities, being part of a pub with a good food menu located in a historic building with a rambling layout that’s full of character. The hotel is a more recent annex. The furnishings are a bit dated, but it’s comfortable, clean, quiet and good value on the night I stayed.
Great value hotel.
Great hotel. Friendly staff and very good breakfast. Bit of a squeeze in the car park.
It was okay for short trips rooms very dated beds far to soft very dated property
Nice central location ,
Really pleasant surroundings , not far from the centre of Exeter . Nice clean room really helpful staff, would return
Lodge hotel attached to Exeter’s oldest traditional inn. Good rooms and fantastic old traditional bar area.
Very convenient placed to explore Exeter town centre, quiet despite being in city centre. Safe parking - at relatively low cost.
Spent one night here, taken about 30/40 minutes to check in. I was waiting at the check in desk, no one was around and i had never been before. Seen one staff member and asked for help, they turned around quite rudely she exclaimed "im going home"?? Did ask where i can go for help and got ignored!! Found the bar and asked for help there, another woman who was also a bit rude and acting as if they didnt want to be there and said someone will come down to help md if i go back to the desk. Another 10 or so minutes passed until a 3rd membef of staff appeared who was very helpful. On checkout, no one was on the desk again (about 7am) so i just left the keys on the desk and walked out worrying i would be charged for missing keys, which i thankfully wasnt! Dont think i would stay again due to the staff. The room overall was clean and comfortable, great location, and good value for money.
Fantastic room, fantastic position, absolutely brilliant.
One of the bath towels was soiled, as though someone wiped their backside with it. It was also very noisy because there were people partying under our window well after 2am. In addition the elevator functioning intermittently. Lastly, the staff was not very friendly.
Recommend
A smashing place to stay for a couple of nights. Staff were lovely as is the building.
Hotels.com stop saying "free parking" it isn't!
I blame Hotels.com for the misinformation of "free parking" when initially booking! It was what it was, a simple stay above a pub and good job a room fan was supplied. The place is a little tired and dusty in places. The staff were very accommodating.
Very well situated hotel. Clean room and comfortable size. Unfortunately had to chase up clean towels on first two days. Breakfast procedure re paying for additional items led to confusion. Staff were helpful and friendly and always willing to offer advice and ensure that you were looked after.
Historic building, well maintained. Friendly, helpful staff. Close to town centre shopping, cathedral, trains, and buses. Affordably priced good breakfast. Room decor and amenities fairly basic. Our west facing room was warm and stuffy in the hot summer weather.
Receptionist gave the best greeting. Very friendly and helpul. Rooms clean
Issue we had was we were on 4th floor and it had been a hot day (27C). The accommodation block had 4 floors and a flat roof. Barely able to open the window, no aircon, no fan, it was unbearable.
Exeter July 2024
Staff were all friendly and helpful. Room was clean and bed was comfortable but there was only a fan - no air conditioning. A pleasant stay was disrupted by a loud TV in a neighbouring room on last night. Most of the hotel's accommodation is located in an adjoining 1970s era wing. Historical bars at front of property were very interesting.
Great, convenient location
Another good stay at The White Hart. Our twin room was comfortable enough and clean with all necessary amenities. The staff didn't seem to go out of their way to provide a great service to their customers but there did not appear to be many staff members around at times. The chamber maids were very friendly and helpful. The bar food was OK but the kitchen I was told closed at 8.30pm, which I th ought was a bit early for a Wednesday evening in the height of summer. The hotel itself is very convenient for the city centre and having a car park is a great plus. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would stay again in future.
Four poster
A wonderful room with a four poster in the old part of the hotel. Very good indeed.
Decent hotel above a nice pub
This is a decent hotel above a nice pub in the centre of Exeter. Room was clean and comfortable. Staff seemed friendly.
A gem!
Friendly staff good value
Good city accommodation
The accommodation was just we wanted. Close to the town and activities in the city. The room was clean and fresh and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Parking was also available at the rear which made life very easy. Would stay there again on my next visit.
Only 1 pillow. Quite noisy outside traffic. Breakfast was slow, and poor.
Man on reception unfriendly and unhelpful, he also doubled as barman
Really friendly and helpful staff
I had a great stay. Fantastic location close to bars and restaurants. The girl on reception was very helpful and thorough with making sure I knew everything I needed to!
Close to the Cathedral and great restaurants.
The staff were wonderful, could not have been nicer or more accommodating. Unfortunately, due to a leak that affected some rooms, I was moved to a single room which was a bit tired, however the staff gave a suitable discount. The building has a long history as so is a bit of a warren, but it is the lovely staff that make this place really special.
Very comfortable hotel, great location. We had dinner and brewer and both very nice. Staff polite and friendly
Excellent value for money. Friendly staff, good service and decent food.. Great location for the city centre.
Rooms need a renovation!
The location was perfect for my needs. The rooms are just worn and in need of renovations.
Convenient, central city location
I have stayed here several times. They have recently made improvements to the hotel and facilities which was much needed. All the staff were friendly and very helpful. I will definately stay here again.
Wouldn’t stay again.
There was no one at the checkin when we arrived. They had to hunt someone down. For the price we paid the room was just ok. Bed very comfortable, Room badly in need of update. The curtains were torn. Very dark room. Location close to the cathedral.
Thought the breakfast range was poor. Had to pay extra for beverages and no options for cereal, fruits etc. as a starter. Also understaffed. Went to use the lift one morning to be told by maintenance man that I would have to use the stairs to the 4th floor. I’m 76 years old and found this very difficult.
Very welcoming reception. Room comfortable and clean. Good bed. The old inn buildings historical and interesting and charming. Lovely pub bar with little beer garden in the courtyard. Could offer more variety of beers and nicer wine glasses to up the pleasure of using the bar.
Started badly as reception was unable to ‘tap’ my card from my phone so I had to rummage to find the real thing! They blamed the ‘new’ booking system. In room 101 the bathroom was poorly lit, had no mirror, over basin light didn’t work, no toilet roll holder, no toilet brush, basin taps had no indicator tops just holes where they should be. Window had noticeable black mould in the sealant. Bed was clean and comfortable, shower fine.
I like the convenient location, the excellent service from the staff and a good choice of dinner menu. I did feel that my room was in need of a good make-over, painting and floor covering.
Nice little Inn with mostly friendly staff. The rooms could do with a bit of freshening up, ours had grease on the wall above the bed, we assume from hair transfer. The window's are also old and ours wouldn't fully close and didn't have working locks. Where this didn't affect the temperature of the room it did mean that we could hear everyone outside through the night. Much as the decor and furniture shows signs if wear and tear the room itself was clean and tidy and the bathroom was huge. The restaurant area was nice, although a little disorganised in the evening. We ate about 6pm on a Saturday and they weren't exactly busy but the 1 member of staff seemed to be too busy to manage. By comparison the breakfast service was well organised and efficiently run. The staff were friendly, so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. There isn't a great deal of car park space and be ware as some of the singage in the car park does not make it clear that hotel guests don't pay at the machine, you pay at the desk inside. If you do pay at the machine they can only give you £4 back on what youve paid, the 1 sign out front says you get a refund for parkkng at the bar but it's £4 off your bill in the restaurant/bar area. The parking although part of the Inn is run by another company which is why they can't fully refund hotel guests who've used the pay and display system!
Exeter return
Comfortable 2 night stay, good breakfast, centrally located,
Room was good size and bed comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful. Avoid staying in room 1 as it backs on to the car park and I could hear a conversation out there which woke me at 3am and lasted for an hour! This obviously frustrated me and did impact on the enjoyment of my stay. It was meant to be peaceful and relaxing.
Great place, nice room and helpful staff. The breakfast avocado, baco and eggs on toast the best i have had.
Nice and clean
Avoid avoid avoid
30 minute argument when I arrived refused to allow us the room until we gave him a credit card. In the end we gave them a debit card with zero balamce. Woken up at 4am by a lorry reversing outside
Location
A great lady minute find!
The hotel staff really helped us to get settled in quickly and made us feel right at home. The bar staff were really friendly too. We didn't eat here but the Wednesday night curry looked and smelled amazing as they passed us by. The room was spacious, clean and everything worked.
This is the first time we have stayed at this hotel. It was very central and parking was only £5 for 24 hours which is excellent for Exeter. Check in was easy as details were sent online. Check out also available this way. We o my had to drop the key in the box this morning. The rooms were clean. A hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities available. All staff were very friendly and helpful we would definitely stay here again. Good value accommodation.
adequate for stay. meals ok. own car park but pay a fee
Terrible stay
No soap liquid at bath room and found hair on the bath room's wall.
Had a great three days at The White Hart. Karen and her team were very friendly and helpful. The property is old and could do with some investment ,but for the money i paid it was excellent and it was so close to the city centre that everything was walkable. .If I have to come back to Exeter it will be my first choice.
Very dated.
It's possible that this hotel has a low staffing level during the low season which would account for the sparse level of service. We had to go and hunt for someone just to check in. The property is very dated and the beds are poor quality and lumpy. The worst thing was the bar, being a Marston's pub I thought there would be some good beers on tap. They had 1 beer on tap at the bar... The staff we did meet were very friendly. Overall this is a budget hotel so you get what you pay for but I'd say this was a fair bit below the standard of a Travelodge which is about the same price.
Safe we’re wonderful. Property could do with some investment.
I loved it
Excellent location
Excellent location lovely old hotel nice comfortable rooms
Location good and reasonably priced.
Great hotel, really good location, friendly reception, staff and Cleaners, rooms were fine, but the lady at breakfast was shockingly rude both days!
Single rooms were ok when priced around £50-60. Now they are near £100, they are shabby and in need of updating. Moth eaten carpets are not acceptable at that price point.
Steeped in history, but needs some loving.
OK but very tired, needs some tidying up. However, not modernising. Expensive for what it is!
Enjoyed our stay
Great location
A good two night break. Great location, comfortable bed and clean.
A character full property
Parking was possible in our campervan despite the system not allowing a van. Only able to book it on arrival.
Liked everything about it - friendly staff, warm, cosy rooms, excellent food, tons of quirky character, superb location for Exeter cathedral and shopping.
Excellent value for money. Spacious room, comfortable bed. Good pub food. Helpful, friendly staff. Would stay again.
I would stay here again. Love the historic ambience and the staff were friendly. Room was a bit tired but adequate. One of the complementary biscuit packets was already opened. We wanted to eat in house and while their menu was fine there was absolutely no promise for anyone with allergies and they would not even guarantee that vegetarian options were not tainted with meat (eg. Fried in the same oil. ) As a result we ate nearby, there are lots of choices, and were very well looked after.
Great stopover for shopping quays and Xmas market
Close to all amenities and shopping
The white heart is so friendly, we couldn't of asked for a better place to stay Gemma and the staff were amazing so kind and caring. It was a big weekend for all our family and they couldn't do enough to help thank you to the white heart we will definitely come back again. Ps the breakfast was brilliant 👏
Excellent
Excellent all round - staff very friendly and helpful- room very comfortable and clean - excellent breakfast- great parking Walking distance to town Nothing more to say
Love the property, it is such high quality in every way. Staff were super friendly. Two tiny things, I didn’t love that the staff wanted to hand write my card details for incidentals. I usually use Apple Pay on a card reader and that is massively preferable (for security reasons). The other thing was that I asked to leave my bag and they asked if I was fine leaving it on the floor next to reception. I said I was but after reflection I wasn’t and went back to get it. The reception assured me somebody would be keeping an eye on it but when I went to retrieve it, there was nobody at reception and the door to the parking lot was wide open. This is jot enough to deduct any stars (to be fair, I could have said no about the credit card and I was aware that my bag wasn’t in a safe place) but worth mentioning all the same.
You will need patience with this hotel... A lengthy wait to check in did not present me with a great first impression of this hotel, then the amount of information the team required from me which I had already provided when booking was annoying and the reason why the check-in process took so long and the queues formed. This hotel has lots of history, a wonderful mix of old and new, which was well presented if a little jaded in places. The room was well appointed yet in places dated in terms of upkeep and décor but it was clean. Noise, both internal and external, was a major issue for me throughout the stay; noise from the adjacent street continued into the small hours of the morning and I was woken early by the refuge collection. Couple this with internal noise, with thin walls between rooms making it possible to hear the lovemaking couple in the room next door; so sleep proved to be difficult and fleeting. Add to this the dated television which proved difficult to watch and the intermittent speed of the Wi-Fi which was annoying when trying to enjoy an online movie Car parking was not included and cost £5 per night. Located on the edge of the city centre however not that convenient for the railway stations both of which are a long walk away. This hotel could be so much better with little effort.
Great heart at White Hart
Staff were outstanding all round. Nothing was too much trouble. The room was comfortable but overheated until I turned the radiator off. Cleanliness was very good apart from the window frames and surround which were dirty and had some mould
Excellent Value for money. Pleasant staff and a convenient location.
Stayed here previously. Excellent staff throughout who are professional and courteous. Gemma In Reception has always been very helpful and friendly. Lovely old property lots of character. Excellent cooked breakfast too.
Lovely old building. No-one on reception when we arrived. Room clean and bed comfortable but no bulbs in lights behind bed and only one bed side lamp, too dim to read by. Staff not particularly friendly except for young man who served our breakfast. Tea and coffee making facilities adequate apart from no spoons so used a toothbrush to stir with. Overall, needs a shake up.

Great deal. Thankyou
