Nothing of interest really close by. A good 10 minute walk to Inari but thats only worth a visit once. Handy for the transport. My room had a terrible smoke smell on the firat night. The whole floor did. I spent the night coughing. I complained the next morning and requested a move saying i would return by 9pm. To their credit they moved my belongings to a room on a dufferent oor and it was far better.

It is an older building but the actual facilities were physically clean and the staff service was top notch. The hallways and rooms had a very musty smell which did not go away. It was slightly inconvenient to move around with luggage but it was chosen for its affordable price and close proximity to the Fushimi Inari Shrine (10-15 minute walk). It mostly a residential neighbourhood so it's very quiet.

This hotel is well located if you're planning to go to the Inari temple (one thousand doors temple). It has a subway station nearby, which is very convenient. Breakfast was great! My only complain is that the first day we arrived, the hall and rooms had a strong incense smell that we almost confused with cigarette (it was that strong, though not cigarette). It was gone the rest of the stay, but it was weird. The hair dryer is a small one, so if you have a lot of hair, it'll take a while. The staff was super nice and friendly and answered all our questions. There are a few restaurants nearby, though we usually ate around the places we were sightseeing.

Lovely stay in Kyoto

We stayed for 2 nights in Kyoto...a quick stop to sightsee as we travelled around Japan as part of our Rugby World Cup supporter vacation. We arrived before check in opened and leaving our luggage was no hassle or problem. Checking in later was effortless and the room compact but clean. Complementary robe and slippers, use of a fridge in the room were all very welcome. The bathroom had a small bath tub and powerful shower and body wash etc was provided. Although the hotel has a restaurant attached, they also recommended some great restaurants located a short 2-5 min walk from the hotel, there's no need to go into town for food! The hotel is located to the south of the city, with taxis to/from the station around ¥2,500. It's a short 10 walk to Fushimi Inari shrine (give yourself at least 3 hrs and a lot of bug spray to walk it all!) and also the Inari train station, and is also on a city bus route if you want instead to take public transport

The staff were exceptional, and went over and above to help me with a unfortunate booking problem/delay after a last minute change in plans due to a typhoon. The booking glitch wasn't even their fault, but they sorted it out for me anyway. The room was pleasant but older feeling in decor and their was a mildly unpleasant smell through the halls and room. Linen etc was pristine, very quiet room. Looks exactly like pictures.

Fantastic Japanese experience

Clean rooms, friendly staff. Stayed here as daughter is attending local university - 5 minutes away. Close to travel networks and local shrines etc. Only disappointing thing was that the hotel restaurant was being refurbished. Wherever we went it was always clean and tidy and didn't feel vulnerable outside even at night time. The hotel supplied a smart phone in our room for our personal use - this saved buying a sim card locally and we could also use it to phone our daughter locally and use it for international calls. Great for using the maps whilst we were out and about - invaluable !

Really great price for what you get. Room is clean, staff is very friendly. They hold your bags in behind their desk unlike other hotels who leave it out in the open. There is a restaurant attached to the hotel and the food is delicious. Really love the free full course breakfast. Only con is the distance from the stations, but the walk is simple and there are many taxis that pass through.

Be warned, if your stay includes breakfast.

Old and tired hotel lobby. Clean room with foul smelling bathroom and noisy air conditioner. BE WARNED! Check-in staff tried to scam me out of my breakfast buffet meal tickets, by saying they weren't included in my stay's plan - had to show them my confirmation email to convince them. Even then, they seemed like they were doing me a favour by giving me my tickets.

Decent place for the money.

Space is at a premium in Japan, so the fact that our room was tiny shouldn't be held against the place. But the room was pretty small. It was clean and comfy, the bathroom was nice (go go Gadget bidet!), so no points lost or gained there. The location was a bit out there...we made due, but for whatever reason I thought it was closer to Kyoto Station when I booked it. The staff were nice enough. The breakfast was nothing to write home about, and though cheap, not free. Lost points for bad iced coffee. Not a bad place, but nothing spectacular. 3 stars out of five?

Stayed here as I visited Kyoto and surrounding area for a week. The hotel is only a short walk to Inari station which makes exploring the city and getting to downtown quite easy. Very small rooms, too far to public transportation

Room is very very small. We were misguided by the user comments about its location. It is out of Kyoto. Not in walking distance to any touristic point else than Fushimi Inari shrine. It is certainly FAR from public transportation. The closest train station is at least 10-15 minutes walk and you can not reach Kyoto station from that one with a direct line. You need to pass the river and walk 10 minutes more to get to Inari station which is far better to use for going to Kyoto station. Too much time wasting if you will be in Kyoto for just a few days. A clean hotel but certainly expensive for what it offers.

Hotel a short walk to Fushimi Inari Taisha

Convenient. Keihan Line (Fukakusa stn 5min walk) JR Line (Inari Stn 10min walk) Karasuma Line (Kuinabashi Stn 12min walk) Buses 105 and Minami 5 go to Kyoto Station. Marum Bakery sells fresh bread at 108 Yen each. Family Mart is across the road. Front desk is professional. Perhaps feel they are slightly more reserved due to language barrier. Room is adequate for me but may be small for bigger and taller guests, in particular, the bathroom :D

Convenient, affordable, but cramped.

Highs: close to transportation (1 block from #5 & #105 buses, about 1km to Inari & Fushimi-Inari stations), clean, quiet, and a coin laundry on site. Non-smoking floors. Easy walk to the Fushimi Inari shrine (and if you can't walk there, forget walking to the top). Lows: meant primarily for business travelers, not tourists, so very little room for clothing. There's barely room for the 3 clothes hangers; everything else will have to stay in the suitcase or sit on the chair.

A Good Hotel for Budget-focused Travellers

We (husband and wife) stayed at Urban Hotel Kyoto for 7 nights in May 2016 and would definitely consider staying here again. The room was small, but comfortable and clean. It is located in 'suburban' Kyoto, a short walk to Keihan Railway's Fukukasa station. This, to us, was an advantage because the Keihan Railway is the major north-south railway and it made it easy to reach the major tourist areas north of the Kyoto railway station and to the east of the city, as well as accessing Mt Hiei and the Kurama/Kibune areas where we planned to do some walking. It was fun discovering local restaurants (the three we patronised were all good - the Ramen restaurant virtually opposite the hotel, the Korean/Okonomiyaki Shogetsu restaurant and the yakka tori Roman-ya Fujimori 300 metres down the road; the hotel provides a listing most local eateries). There is a Family Mart mini-supermarket and a great patisserie across the road, and a bakery next door. The hotel provides (very reasonably priced) washing machines and dryers - so everything is handy. The stunning Fushimi-Inari Shrine is within walking distance of the hotel, but the closer Hotoji Temple is also well worth a short visit.

Hotel is in Inari region. Bus #South-5 goes from Kyoto station to within a block of the hotel (The bus pass works here and sold at the hotel front desk) About 5 minute walk to Keihan line:Fukakusa station, and another 5 minute walk JR Nara line:Inari station (which is across the street to the front entrance to the famous Fushimi Inari shrine.) The hotel room is a very typical Japanese business hotel room with pre-fab bathroom. (including soaking tub and bidet) It is cozy, but clean. There is a small fridge in the room. It is actually the mini-bar, but stocked with a couple beers and water that you can buy for the same price at the vending machine anyway... I received a free bottle water at check-in. There is a university nearby, so there are lots of cheap food places nearby open late. There are 2 decent bakery right outside of the hotel. Convenience store is across the street.

Hotel is a little out of the main Kyoto area, but a lot cheaper than most, so the difference is worth it if you're willing to use the trains a little more. Otherwise, super comfortable, staff is very nice and accommodating. The room was clean and comfortable, and the amenities were nice to have. This hotel was overall a great experience, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Clean and comfortable, but far

The hotel itself was nice - the rooms were very clean and the staff were friendly. The only downside I would say is that it is not near the "downtown" Kyoto area. It takes about 20 minutes from the hotel to the downtown area by train, which isn't too bad considering the price of this hotel for it's quality. That being said, the nearest train station is not wheelchair accessible (stairs but no ramp or elevator), but there is a wheelchair accessible station about an extra 7 minutes walk away, though it is on a different line. A nice perk to this hotel is that it is very close to the beautiful Fushimi Inari shrine (it is famous for having over a thousand red tori gates).

Great hotel, would definitely stay again

First thing I will say about this hotel is that if you get the Keihan train to Fukakusa, you really can't miss it; I stupidly took the underground on a different line and tried to walk to the hotel, and I got lost in 28 degrees heat with an enormous bag. Felt very stupid when I saw how close it was to the Keihan stop! Once I arrived, the staff spoke very good English and explained everything to me, very nice lobby as well. The room was more than big enough and was clean and seemed well maintained. I got the breakfast which was quite simple; two slices of toasted fruit bread (although they are very thick slices!), a boiled egg, and a small salad-type thing. Its small but it fills you up enough until lunch time. This was my favourite hotel during my trip; it was nice and quiet and felt very "cosy". There's a Family Mart (I think) across the road so you can easily get some late night food. I believe there is a restaurant on site but I didn't use it, however at check in I was given an English list of local restaurants, what type of food they do and when they're open which is incredibly useful and no other hotel has provided anything like this, a great touch. If you're staying for more than a couple of nights then the extra you pay for this over say, a hostel is absolutely worth it. Overall, I loved this place and if I'm ever in Kyoto again I'll definitely be staying again!

4 nights August Stay

The hotel is fine, if you want to be in the centre of Kyoto then this is slightly further away than other hotels. It'll only take 20mins to get to the centre etc but its worth considering. Rooms is fine, just a little small, recommend a twin room instead of a standard double for more space.

Fushimi Inari within 10mins!

This hotel is located not 5minutes from the JR-Nara line and Keihan line trains. Also, Fushimi Inari is so close, and from both those stations (JR-Inari station, and Keihan-Fushimi Inari station) you can access a lot of local Kyoto without so many transfers. A convenience store is just across the road, and it's a fairly quiet place.

Very affordable, easy access to train and bus

The hotel was not flashy, but was comfortable and affordable. It was easy walking distance to Keihan Fukakusa Station, only about 10 meters from the nearest bus to Kyoto Station, and only 1km or so from Fushimi Inari Shrine. The staff was very helpful and everything was (as in every Japanese hotel I've stayed in) immaculate.

Yes, its not bad. Good thing is that 2 stations are nearby. Room was too small even they say its double. The room service didnt cleaned the room properly everyday. But the front desk service was good enough. For single I recommend , for family, dont.

2nd visit as good as the first

We stayed in this hotel 18 months ago and enjoyed it so much, we came back. As good as before and lovely to see again - the staff are very friendly and helpful and it is close 2 several stations which makes it very well connected for travelling in and around Kyoto.

Good enough for the price.

It was very difficult to find. None of the train stops or the street names are in English as they were in Tokyo. It is in an old neighborhood which was nice to be able to see it away from the big city. The hotel was clean, employees were nice enough. It reminded me of a cabin on a cruise ship. The room was small, the bathroom was raised up from the floor. The window over looked the wall. The TV was only functioned for japan, even the movies that were for sale. I did not pay a lot to stay here, it was one step up from a youth hostel but it was good enough for the price.

fair quality

The location of hotel is a little far from train station, about 15 - 20 mins walking distance. The staff were nice, room was not bad except the hard pillow we did not like, and there is one convenience store opposite of hotel. Overall, I reckon it is fair quality for budge travel.

In nice neighbourhood

You can take the hourly city bus from Kyoto rail station bus terminal to get to the hotel. Alternatively there are frequent local trains to take. Fushima Inari Taisha nearby should not be missed. The hotel provides free wifi and travel information sheet about local attractions.

Far away from Kyoto town

The room and services are average. The location of the hotel is quite rural from Kyoto city area. The only advantage of the hotel is near to the hot attraction "Fushimi Inari". It will be a good choice if you wish to spend a day on Fushimi Inari.

near Fushimi Inari Temple

The location was good for seeing Fushimi Inari temple and 2 train lines were nearby. It's only a few stops away from Kyoto station. The surrounding area doesn't offer much else though. The hotel is on the older side and feels outdated but it's well kept and clean. We only stayed one night to break up a long train ride and this hotel was good for that purpose. Staff didn't know much english but it wasn't a problem for us since we only interacted during check in/out.

nice hotel

first of all the hotel itself was great, the location was a little far from where we were wanting to visit. There is only one bus that runs from Kyoto JR station to the hotel and the bus is 5 south, and only every hour. My sister and I decided we didn't want to wait so we walked and it took about 20 to 30 minutes with two heavy luggage, we were dumb.....

Cheap decent stay for budget minded traveller

This hotel was a little more out of the way than we expected. We had a 10-15 minute walk to and from the hotel & the JR Inari station. While this was acceptable, it was a bit of a struggle when we were overladen with baggage. For those less able a taxi would be necessary. Overall this hotel was very cheap and provided us with a bed to sleep in at night (As well as ice and beverages from the vending machines on the 3rd and 6th floor) but did not provide us with our own oasis to return to after a long tiring day of sightseeing. It was pleasant, but I wouldn't have wanted to spend much more time there than we did.

Hotel the worst of my Japan trip

We traveled 10 days in Japan. This hotel was the worst in size. The double bed was up against the wall on three side requiring one sleeper to crawl over the other to get into or out of bed. There was just barely enough space to get to the bed. No view. The staff was nice. No meals here but there is a restaurant attached. There is a rather long walk from either of the two railway stations servicing the area. I wouldn't want to walk it in the rain.

Good for the price

Pro: Clean room, able to open window for fresh air, super market next door for cheap food/drinks/snacks,gift shop in lobby for last minute purchase. Con:far from Kyoto station (1,200 yen cab ride to station from hotel), only one restaurant open 24 hours, every other ones opens at from 11 to 2, then 5 to 11.

Budget price, small room

Room was ok. It is a 5-10 minute walk from the Inari JR station. Get a map from the Kyoto tourist center in the Kyoto train station and have them mark the route to the hotel. Ask for Wi-fi at front desk in your room. Did not know it was available until the 2nd day. They give you a mini-router you plug in your room for 100 yen a day.

Good hotel, fast ethernet, mediocre location

This was a reasonable hotel for the price. No wifi but if you have a laptop, the Ethernet was very fast (~70mbps). Location wasn't great however. It's about a 10-15 min walk from the Keihan line, which is great if you're trying to get to the temples on the east side of Kyoto, but not great for getting to central Kyoto.
