Great service .. very lovely room
loved the stay
Love this place, never fails.
.
Had a great stay at Head of the River this weekend. Hotel and staff were great.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Bedrooms were very comfortable with excellent bathroom and shower - although floor of shower was a bit slippery. Lovely choice of breakfast. Can’t wait to return.
We had a great stay at The Head of the River. Our room was really comfy - and our dog Bert was made really welcome too. Breakfast was exceptional.
Great breakfast
Room very clean and comfortable, good view, quiet despite being next to a busy road. Staff all pleasant and helpful. Top quality complimentary teas and coffees. Lovely toiletries. Great breakfast. Would definitely stay again
Wed night Thames water decided to dig up Folley Bridge at 11.15pm. Unbelievably loud pneumatic drills being used to break up the concrete. This disturbance went on until about 3am. A total nightmare. Obviously not the fault of the Head of the River, but i hope HOTR will complain to the council for sanctioning these roadworks to begin at 11:15pm right next door to a hotel full of guests. Other than that, a perfect stay in Oxford and i fully recommend the HOTR as an ideal location with lovely hotel rooms.
would recommend & would stay again when in the area. room was clean and comfortable, food was good and affordable, staff was excellent
Quick but perfect stay at Head of the River!
We enjoyed a 2-night stay at Head of the River. Fantastic location. Restaurant/pub on site was excellent—and the included breakfast was an added bonus. Staff was lovely! Beds were very comfortable and bed linens were high quality. Loved our stay and would absolutely stay again.
Great accommodation with lovey staff and great pub !
Love this property, everything you could ask for. Great food, lovely room with such character, great breakfast. Close to all the top spots in Oxford and close to the railway station and bus drop off from London.
The Head off the river is a stunning place to stay. The room is very clean and has everything you can need. The staff from the beginning were helpful and accommodating. The food at the restaurant had a full and great selection, and delicious.
Lovely
Lovely stay
Enjoyed our stay in this unique hotel on the river Thames. Staff was very friendly and room cozy.
Convenient location and walkable to town. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Friendly, helpful staff. Comfortable room. Excellent pub/restaurant. No lift.
Lovely rooms and pub in a beautiful old building. No on-site parking is a bit of a nuisance, but also understandable given the amazing location!
Overall good stay
Hotel and bar was nice staff helpful just a shame that other customers had to ruin the experience for us but the staff went out there way to make sure we was ok Walls are very thin and can here other people talking /snoring The pub garden was beautiful to sit in, with the sun
Beautiful old inn on the river, great food and nice staff
This place is lovely and very cute! It was our first trip to Oxford and the location was really convenient to the town center. The outdoor bar and restaurant is very charming and popular. The service was excellent- very friendly and helpful staff. Overall, excellent location, property and service
Clean, cosy, welcoming and full of charm. The staff were friendly and helpful. My room had beautiful views of the river and meadow. I’d come back to Oxford just to stay here again.
We stayed at the Head of the River with our kids for a few days recently when visiting schools in the Oxford area. We really liked it. The rooms are lovely and have everything you need, the kids loved the free breakfast which was really delicious. We ended up eating most of our meals there and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Hotel quality rooms in a friendly pub
Very friendly and helpful staff, high quality rooms, tasty breakfast, convenient location, would recommend!
Great location and scenery however very loud hotel and can hear others in their rooms easily. The room was not serviced for a while left in morning, back in afternoon and no toilet tissue or phone to ring downstairs. Not the typical hotel experience.
Lovely room but was a bit dusty and the bed not comfortable
Wonderful place to stay and relax
Great location. Walking distance from train. Room on top floor had great views of the river.
Extended work stay.
Stayed there for several nights. The room was very comfortable and clean. I especially liked the breakfast and very friendly staff. Plus, the location is great for seeing Oxford.
We had an overall good stay at The Head of the River. We were in walking distance to landmarks of interest and there was a lovely coffee shop across the street. The breakfast was included and was good and the staff were friendly. Overall cleanliness of the room was not up to our standards and the first evening we were there it was quite noisy. Would probably look into other options before returning.
Great location, quaint atmosphere!
Lovely view from our ridiculously tiny room-barely room to walk around the bed, no space for luggage or unpacked clothes, no desk or flat surface, tiny bathroom, extremely noisy-a very loud event underneath our window went on late into night and next night it was traffic on the street, very narrow flights of steps to reach our room. Required the white noise from the fan to sleep
Great people and good food. Terrible cleanliness standards though, there was a mouse in the restaurant!
Great Stay
Staff was extremely courteous and helpful!
Good rooms, good food, good beer. Requirement for pay extra for checking in at 1 instead of 3 not good.
We were very impressed with the hotel. The bed was so comfortable and the shower was amazing! Breakfast was provided and it was delicious. We definitely would like to come back again. All staff members were friendly and welcoming and I would recommend this hotel to family and friends.
Great location. On the River and very close to Oxford
Close to City Centre and on site pleasant pub, restaurant right at the side of the river. Quirky and comfortable room with very good tea and coffee and chocolates.
First class all the way! Amazing rooms! Great food, great service, fantastic location! We have come here in past years for food and pints but stayed this time. Great location for river walks, easy walks around town, easy cab pick ups. Big kudos to all the staff, you are fantastic and helped make us feel comfortable and safe with your professionalism and kindness! We will stay here again!!
Wonderful property. Beautiful location. Great reception. Great breakfast. Comfy rooms.
Like sleeping by a dual carriageway.
Lovely location with super helpful and friendly front desk and restaurant staff! The breakfast was deluxe! The room was nice, but next time we will request an upper floor-we were on the ground floor next to the outdoor dining area and therefore could not open the windows for air and keep our privacy as our windows opened to the tables in the dining area or the street and people could literally look over straight into our room. Other than that, we had a lovely stay and would stay there again.
Weekend in Oxford
We booked our stay through hotels.com. Check in was easy even though we arrived at 11pm. The building is old so has a lot of character and some of the old sash windows require attention but secondary glazing made the room comfortable. The room was fully equipped with everything we needed so no complaints. The breakfast suited us but some may find the choice a little limited compared to a large hotel. The main English cooked breakfast was one of the largest ever received - make sure you’re hungry- compliments to the chef! It’s a short walk into the Center and also not far from the park and ride. Service was friendly so couldn’t complain about anything. Would stay again 👍
Up to the third floor using a very narrow and steep staircase, no lift, to the end of the corridor, to a very small room. No fire exit, which is a risk in such an old building.
The hotel was a disappointment. I would give one star, but because the excellent breakfast, I give two stars. Other than this, lazy and unhelpful staff (with one exception), dirty room, lack of services… I would avoid it next time.
Loved our stay at Head of the River. This is a perfect place to enjoy a mini-vacation in Oxford. Great hospitality by the staff. Amazing breakfast.
A fun place to stay in Oxford
Our stay was very pleasant. The place itself is fun and the breakfasts were excellent. Delicious plant cases options! We didn't realize we had to put a sign out for housekeeping and because the condensation was high from the shower, the towel never really dried out. Our room 12 was a little rough as the mirror had fallen down and wasn't removed or tge wall repaired. However, the view of the river was gorgeous and despite the fun pub downstairs, our room was very quiet. The staff was very friendly...
Good but not great
PROS: *Hotel is in a good location and only a short walk from city centre. *Good tea/coffee facilities. *bottles of both still and sparkling water provided. *towels and bed linen were clean. *large TV with plenty of channels. *good selection of toiletries provided. *breakfast is fantastic! CONS: * Check-in was friendly but disorganised as they didn’t seem to be expecting us and the receptionist questioned whether we’d arrived on the correct day (which we had). *mattress was horrendous. It appeared to be two singles pushed together to form a double, meaning a large risen up section running the entire central length of the bed. The right side of the mattress was incredibly worn & had multiple points in which it dipped considerably, making it very difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position. Honestly, in terms of comfort, easily the worst nights sleep I’ve ever had at a hotel. *Dust seems to be an issue. *very thin walls mean you can hear neighbouring rooms chitchat. *extractor fan in bathroom didn’t appear to be working. Overall, I’m torn on this hotel. Do I think it deserves 4 stars? No. But do I think it’s terrible? No. I’m sure if you score the right room you’ll have a lovely stay, but for me personally, it wasn’t quite good enough and didn’t justify the price.
A beautiful looking place unfortunately, I left without staying. I’m disabled. There was no parking anywhere near( an 8 min ride by car). There was a steep set of stairs up to my room. I was tired and in pain and decided I couldn’t handle it. Need to make those features clear in your Ad. I decided to eat the cost. There was no one on the desk as I left so just put my key on the desk and quietly left
Oxford gem
What an incredible find! I loved the quirkiness of this hotel along with it's great location. I had made a reservation for the wrong date, and they STILL honored the reservation. I was only here for one night but it was memorable. The pub had great food and beer. The room was quirky but with modern amenities, loved everything about this place and will definitely return. Staff were very, very helpful wish I had written this review the next day as I cannot remember their names .
Hard to park
Parking is difficult. We used the park and ride. Cheap
Great place
this is a lovely place in a lovely location.you can walk to most places and the train station is only about .7 km away on an easy walk. Christ church is two blocks . the christ church meadow is behind the Inn and a lovely walk Located right on the thames so boat rides are available. the bed was very comfortable. breakfast is hearty but i'd avoid the eggs benedict. Staff lovely and helpful.
Servicing can improve — house keeping only takes out trash and makes bed.
lovely
great staff, breakfast, comfy bed, comfy room, great location. very dusty room and could hear the tv in the room next too us. would stay again though
What a fantastic hotel, it has everything, location, beautiful and clean room with all facilities required, most accommodating staff who couldn’t be more helpful and wonderful pub/restaurant with homemade food and discount for hotel guests, had such a great time and would visit again and again
They had our reservation logged for the wrong dates when we arrived. They tried to say this (their!) error was because we had not prepaid which would have moved the booking dates?! The room was very tired, grubby, damp, poorly decorated and clearly needs entirely redoing including a new bathroom which was not clean and poor standard. The room was nothing like the quality shown in pictures. We were constantly made to feel like errors were our fault eg not getting housekeeping done because we put our door sign out too late , and being presented with a WhatsApp photo of our door to prove they were right and we were wrong. The cold breakfast selection is good but the cooked plant based breakfast was not nice at all. No way worth the price in our opinion based on the customer service and quality of accommodation.
Great location and delicious meals.
Great choice of hearty breakfasts. Nice literary touch to the rooms. Excellent location.
Disappointed
It was OK but disappointed, the Hotel was advertised as 4 star but I find that hard to believe, 3 at best. Whilst the rooms were clean, our room as opposite a main road and had no double glazing so kept awake all night by the traffic. Also the walls were paper thin so you could hear every movement in neighbours bathrooms! Lastly as it’s an old pub it had no air management so the room was unbearably hot even in October. Would not stay again or recommend especially at the price paid.
Great experience! Our hotel room was extremely small, couldn’t open our luggage fully in the room! Restaurant downstairs was really good staff members were very welcoming and friendly!
Parking is a little work, but that comes with a great location in a very old city. Long stay, drop off the bags and park miles away. Short stay down the street at the mall is fine and safe. Everything else is wonderful. But I want to get a room next time, so keeping it to myself. ;)
Nice room good service ideal location
No elevator, thin walls, very small room at least the room we had. For the price that we paid I would not stay their again
Was not able to adjust heating and receptionist explained that I could either have it on in which case it would probably be too hot or off. One of their staff was very kind and came up twice to try and fix the problem with no avail. The receptionist obviously knew this was a problem before assigning the room. On the brighter side all other staff were friendly and helpful. I will not be recommending this hotel. It was 5C.
We were given a quiet room at the top & rear of the building with a beautiful, corner view of the river & Folly Bridge. The meals at the pub were terrific, the breakfasts were outstanding and the service always super friendly and helpful. The linen, little extras and furnishings in the room were great but the room itself was rather small and our suitcases had to go under the bed as there was nowhere else for them! Our fan was quite loud and the bed next door was very squeaky indeed & the walls must be very thin😂! If you have mobility issues, the many narrow stairs may be an issue.
Staff very helpful. Bathroom was newly refurbished. Room dingy, dark, small, no desk, carpeting in room and hallway in bad need of replacement. Glad only stayed one night -- would not return. Food both breakfast (free) and dinner were very nice.
We were there over a weekend and, despite our room being right over the pub, we had no problem with noise and slept well. Breakfasts are fantastic! The location couldn’t be more convenient or more picturesque.
.
A very nice boutique hotel located on the banks of the Thames. Our room was comfortable and roomy. The restaurant with its outside patio is delightful. Highly recommended.
The service was great and the management and staff were exceptional and would do anything to help you. What an excellant location you were a minute away from a entrance to the Christchurch meadow.
Not great, to expensive for what you get
Unfortunately this I Hotel is completely overpriced. There was mould in the shower, room not particularly clean. The window lead straight out to a communal balcony walkway, people walk passed and we’re literally a couple of metres away from us lying in bed. Window mouldy too. Breakfast not great. Staff pleasant.
Wonderful stay at The Head of the River in a small room. In suite shower was great. Bed was comfy, although the room was a little warm. They’d provided two fans. Breakfast was amazing and the pub staff was very friendly. Lots of places to walk to and see the town of Oxford, 1/4 mile to Christ Church College.
I expected more ...to be honest. The room was very hot even with the fan provided, and another reviewer has already highlighted the issue with having the windows open and not being able to lower the blind. The toilet seat needed fixing. We had breakfast one the 1st morning, it was ok but I had a massive piece of eggshell in my scrambled eggs, we went elsewhere on days 2&3. .. However, the location is very walkable into the centre of Oxford, which was the main reason for booking it in the first place!!!! For added info- we had fabulous meals at Quod (on the terrace( and Gee's whilst in Oxford.
Absolutely loved this place! The room was beautiful and clean and they thought of everything to make you feel welcomed. Location is so pretty on the river. Pub is warm and inviting. Love Love Love!!!
Nicely situated on the water. Accommodating staff. Tricky plumbing.
Beautiful property on the river; as an American, this was the idyllic English setting; staff are excellent, professional; food is wonderful. We added an extra night to our stay because we didn't want to leave. Very clean.
It is a charming old hotel in a vibrant English Pub setting. The rooms have a nice rustic feel to them. The breakfasts provided are the best we have ever had. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a more unique but comfortable setting for a holiday stay.
The property is beautiful and the staff are very helpful and friendly. The restaurant is top tier and have a good buzzing crowd in the evening. The breakfast is really good as well.
So unique and one-of-a-kind. Close to everything we wanted to see.
I'm sorry to report that we were disappointed in this place. Although staff was uniformly pleasant and helpful, our room was not good. The mattress was lumpy, stained and very uncomfortable. The window configuration--old double hung with inner-opening casements--did not allow for ventilation or blind use while also using the counter space below the window. This space was necessary because there were no other place to put a second traveler's suitcase in the tiny room. The bathroom had a similar configuration and so we were unable to use the blind for privacy whilst having an open window. As there was no ac, opening the windows was essential. Lastly, the heavy shower handle came off and clattered to the floor as I brushed by it in the tight bathroom. This place has a good location and a charming pub with decent food, but I cannot recommend a stay in the hotel.
City Break
Staff are excellent, beautiful setting by the river and so easy with the Park and Ride. We had the cosy room and it was very cosy! If we were staying longer than 2 nights i would have definitely booked a bigger room however as it was small. If you are staying, the hotel offers 10% off food and drink which is a lovely bonus. Would definitely stay again but in a bigger room.
Superb location. Perfect for city centre and river views. Property needs some maintenance, rooms are ok and nice breakfast. Pub is popular in summer and they ran out of food, which seems very bad planning.
On the river, next to Christ Church meadows. Good walks. Good breakfast. Caters to vegetarians.
Excellent hôtel and pub. The food was terrific and the staff were very welcoming, accommodating and helpful. I f I have the chance to visit Oxford again, I will definitely want to stay there.
Wonderful quiet spot on the river, just a quick walk into the center of town
They were ready for me at check in and my room was ready when I arrived at 2pm. A lovely young man helped carry my case to my room - thank you!
great manager and staff, thank you
Graduation stay
From the welcome on arrival through dinner to breakfast all staff were very friendly, helpful and professional.
Lovely location and pretty central. Comfortable and well-equipped room, lovely staff and a great breakfast. Great for a weekend break.
HOTR
Stayed the night before family wedding. Room was lovely overlooking the river
Ideal location. Nice hotel. Good breakfast.
Expensive for what it delivered. Room was tiny and blue tack on ceiling,
While the hotel had excellent character and the staff were very friendly, you will need to be prepared for a rough night’s sleep especially if you are a light sleeper. Noise from the adjacent road was is intense. Also the geese are quite active all night. Finally trying to walk to the bathroom quietly so not to disturb your spouse is impossible. The floors creak intensely.
Friendly staff. Very comfortable room and received an upgrade. Excellent food as well with a very generous breakfast.
Excellent location - very central and right next to the park and ride bus stop (Redbridge Park and ride). Lovely room which had recently been renovated. Lovely linen, towels and shampoo/conditioner etc. Tea coffee and biscuits in room. Large walk in shower. Breakfast - which was included in room rate - was delicious. A bit of noise from the terrace music in day/early evening (my room overlooked the river) but no noise at all when I went to bed at around 11pm and no early morning noise. Very helpful and polite reception staff. Overall a great choice for central Oxford with an easy park and ride option.
NYE stay
Great value for money, the room was very well decorated to the detail, even the bath shampoos were very special local produced. Breakfast was great and the staff super friendly and helpful- I would definitely go back next time in Oxford
A* lovely rooms, staff very polite. There was a slight disruption with our stay and experience, the staff couldn’t apologise enough and rectified the problem the best they could. I would highly recommend.
Quality Hotel
This is absolutely gorgeous hotel and quality breakfast.

Very good food and the accommodation is great
