Apparently the heating had broken down .there was a heater supp which had seen better days but no way it was enough to heat a room this size . We asked for more covers for the bed ..none . Hairdryer wasent working but partner brought her own so not realky a problem ..
Lovely to watch the sea out the windows
Property is old and in need of a makeover. Restaurant is reasonable but our bedroom was shabby and the bathroom needed a deep clean. Lift is in poor condition. Breakfast was good and reception staff helpful.
We had no problems, everything was good!!
Good, clean property, friendly staff
Excellent Oban.
I enjoyed my stay. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. My single room was clean and peaceful with a beautiful view and an excellent en- suite. My preferred breakfast is a bowl of fruit and porridge and was very good.
It was a bit dated but ok - the surprise was an extra £6 for hotel parking 😕
Oban
Very dissapointed, to say the least. Curtains were falling off the rail and could not be closed properly. So flashing lights in the room all night. Damp on the ceiling above the window. Uncomfortable bed. Unable to add photos !!!
Original room, windows filthy on the inside with graffiti on them, frames all cracked and peeling paint, needing replaced, 6 plugs connected to one 13amp socket?? mould on ceiling, strange stains on oosey carpets, no soaps in dispensers, cracks in wall, light switches all finger marked, outwith room wallpaper torn off one wall in hallway, at breakfast a large dog allowed in dining room, I don’t like to give negative comments, but this hotel was something else I don’t see me ever returning to it, I love Oban but this establishment is letting it down. I have photographs to back up my comments I’m not just having a moan and to be fair we were given another room but overall very disappointing and cannot recommend it at all
Brilliant
👌
The best breakfast anc friendly staff
It’s always a treat to stay at the great Western in Oban
My stay was fine, room only, clean bed and shower room, for £32 I can't complain. The hotel is in need of a refurbishment.
Friendly staff on arrival hotel was good nice and warm the room was spacious and bed comfortable
Was ok
Hotel in a great location, but needs a lot of refurbishment, we have been many times, due the storm we had water pouring in through the ceiling above the window, this is a good hotel , but could be better
Great Hotel
Staff Excellent Food Great The only Issue I Had Was Theres not Enough Parking , so i Parked Off site Got Pa3space Next Morning . If you left to go for a Drive you put a Blue Cone in your Parking Space For You to come Back too In my eyes once you've left carpark it Should Be Available To Any other Guest in hotel Take You're Chances Once You Come Back to Hotel
Never again.
Terrible stay, mouldy walls in the room, bugs in the bed, window broken, shower broken. The hotel overall looks like it’s falling down, multiple areas where it looks like there have been leaks. Parking a nightmare too.
For the price paid, and the convenience for a one night stay before getting the ferry in Oban, I really couldn’t complain. Yes the place is very tired, very old fashioned and due some major refurbishment, but my room was clean, spacious and warm. I had read the reviews in advance and knew what to expect. I received a warm welcome when checking in, and all the staff I spoke with were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was a little limited, but had all the essentials, and was hot and plentiful. Parking was full when I arrived (I believe they charge for parking) but there is a council run car park next to the hotel that is free between 9pm-6am.
Property was warm and comfortable Service was good Parking could be a problem in summer
Pleasant and clean.
The single room I had had a sea view, and was very pleasant and clean. The staff were friendly.
The room was good overall, very spacious with all the amenities you can expect. And for the price I paid it is more than what I expected. Plus, breakfast (buffet) was very good. Only downside is that the building is old so things may break. During my stay my bathroom light kept breaking. The hallway downstairs smell a bit. However, those are small enough that they didn't affect my experience.
they need to fix the heated towel rail which didn't work at all
Staff extremely helpful
We shall be back.
A well situated Victorian hotel on the esplanade in Oban. The hotel is in need of refurbishment and we understand that this is to commence over this winter. Very polite and welcoming staff are to be commended and helped to make our stay very enjoyable. We shall return in the future and hope to see a lovely hotel returned to the quality it so deserves. Thank you.
Third time here, still loving it
Lovely hotel and the locations is just perfect! Central to everything and all within easy walking distance. Had room 309 again which was a lovely high floor with a wonderful view.
The hostel is probably cleaner
I stayed in a twin room with my son for a hospital visit. The room was very dated but the cleanliness was hideous with dirty towels cups and kettle to the filthy lamp shades. The mattresses were also terrible you could literally feel every spring
Has a lift .very small. Bathrooms have hot water but need de moulding(mildew). No venting from bath room causes slippy floor. Beds comfy.no real complaints as it was quiet and priced right.the girl we first met was lovely.on our way out encounted the grummbly mob.
It was nice in general, breakfast finishes at 9.30 am on a Sunday morning which is a tad early for me, (usually hotel breakfast finish around 10.30-11 am) Woke up at 9.20 am and didn’t want to rush about for breakfast as check out is 10 am (again normally hotel checkout is around the 11 o’clock mark) While washing, packing and squeezing in a cup of tea, the door was knocked on (9.50 am) “hi ! Are you staying another night” she asked, talk about here’s your hat where’s your hurry 😬, I replied No, already rushed I was even more under pressure to get out, not great, unfortunately I/we won’t be back. Surely the housekeeper would have already accumulated some vacated rooms without chapping on our door at ten to ten am
Fantastic value hotel in a great location. Only a couple of minutes walk from the centre. Room was basic but had all the essentials. Staff were pleasant and accommodating. Asked for a late check out the night before I was due to leave and was sorted in minutes (did charge £25). Would thoroughly recommend and will be my choice when I come back to Oban.
The property is tired looking and needs some tlc. Room was drab looking and the lampshade on the lamp was shockingly worn. The window was too heavy to open for some air. Disappointed. On the plus side, beds were comfy and the bathroom area was nice. Missing personal touches.
Convenient and clean facilities but rundown.
Room was clean with convenient location and good breakfast. Service was subpar, staff didn’t seem very engaged. Bathroom was horrible, the shower needed fixing while we were there and mould was present throughout.
A little dated, but for the price it was good. What i dont agree with, and would put me off in the future is the extra charges fir exampke £10 a night for a dog ( I understand there is a charge, but should be £10 per stay ) however to charge car parking for non blue badge holders is a disgrace, so you want a few days away with your fogcand bringing your car goes from a reasonable price to potentially an outrageous price.
Very friendly reception staff , really helpful
This property is dirty and smelled off cabbage cooking.
Decent hotel, outdated building, difficult parking
Hotel itself was fine, everything was quite old, but everything was functional. Parking is a mess though. They dont have enough parking for everybody, so it is first come first served. If you see a cone in front of an empty spot, it is taken. You will need to use a public lot if they run out. Luckily there are 2 right next door.
Great place
Food in the restaurant was amazing and the view spectacular. Staff were friendly.
Ideal for a short break and is close to the town centre.
Honest Review
The staff of the hotel were lovely and the location of the hotel was ideal. The view from the lounge area onto the water is superb. When we arrived at the hotel we had to wait around 30 minutes after check in until we could enter our room. The room we paid for was a double but the bed was much smaller than a double and overall the room was very cramped. The housekeeping was very minimal, little to no cleaning, just a top up on the tea and coffee station and the amount of dust we found on top of the wardrobe and curtains was unreal. During our last night we got woke up by a fire alarm at 3am and had to wait outside during a storm, turns out there was no reason for the alarm. Overall the staff were brilliant and the exterior of the building was beautiful. I just feel robbed for the price I paid for the room I got.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean and satisfactory but badly in need of decorating. There had obviously been a water leak from the room above damaging the ceiling which had not been repaired. The hotel looked very tired and in need of refurbishment.
In major need to an upgrade
The accommodation is very outdated and in major need of closure for an upgrade. The heating in the room wouldn’t go off, there was mould in the bathroom and all over the hotel with a lot of water damage.
The property is old, so I did not have unreasonable expectations. I did expect the room to be clean. But there were spots of paint on the walls missing. The room carpet was absolutely filthy, and vacuuming would not have helped much. The holes in the shower head were very black, and there was very obvious black mold in every crease of the shower, as well as all over the rubber shower mat that was folded in the bottom. Beds were quite rickety. Staff was friendly. Would not stay there again.
Best Wesrern
Comfortable room 130, no view from windows just a slated roof. Food was great, bar service slow. Good value.
Advertises parking but there was very limited .could not park at hotel. Did not offer free options only pay
Great location and handy for local attractions. The building is dated albeit there are signs of recent improvements.
This is a grand hotel that has aged, but retains its charm. I loved the location in Oban, the amazing view over the Bay, the ease of walking to the town and to Dunollie Castle, and the friendly and highly competent staff. The lounge had lovely views as did the dining area. Breakfast was good, although not great. I would return for the views, the location, and the staff. It is at least good value for the money and carries a sense of the glory of better times. On the slightly down side, the hotel is aging. Carpets are worn, furniture is mismatched, windows don't shut all the way and some are badly warped. Basically, the hotel needs to be renovated and upgraded. That costs a lot and would require shutting down areas for work. Doing so reduces revenue stream, so this could be a downward spiral. Our experience was so excellent I urge others to stay there and support them as they try to make improvements.
average
it was not so clean. our room did not had any view. it had just a window over the hotel rear. the parking was fine in front of the hotel which is great for a hotel in the city center. the location of the hotel is great. breakfast was average. staffs are good people.
The heater in the bathroom didnt work. Tge radiator in the room. didnt work. They had to bring up an electric heater. The TV also didnt work.
I have to agree with other reviews that this hotel is in dire need of updating! Having said that, the hotel itself seemed like it was once very grand and there is a lot of potential for an investor to renovate and make this hotel great again. And because of its aging infrastructure, the room itself felt dark, floor boards uneven, paint on the walls peeling. . . however we did have a great view of the water! (Including a pet seagull who greeted us at the window). The staff here were excellent, super nice and helpful. The hot breakfast was exceptional. As much as I liked the layout of the hotel, I would not recommend it simply because everything was so rickety and dated.
Old hotel need updating
It was very central and the staff were very helpful and pleasant.
Fabulous views from lounge, & from some rooms. One of our rooms looked refurbished, (the other could do with being done) basic, modern fittings, clean & tidy. Well equipped - toiletries, hair dryer, usb charging points, kettle etc. Plenty choice for breakfast. Very helpful staff. Creaky floors, carpets worn in places - some areas look tired.
Staff was fantastic, check in was easy and the area was beautiful. Hotel is dated and badly maintained. There was mold in the bathroom and the paint was peeling on the ceiling above the bed from moisture. The condition of the room was not worth the price. I do however want to emphasize that the service was fantastic.
No car park available at the hotel but it would have been helpful if the front desk agent had told us we had to pay to park in the lot that was indicated.
Bathroom pipes are blocked cannot take a nice bath or washing face
Dated but clean. Staff very friendly and helpful. Will be returning
Overall very pleasant .Would come again
It is in a fabulous position with views across to several Western Isles. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. It is very convenient for ferries, buses and trains.
The hotel is located a short five minute walk from the centre of Oban with magnificent sunset views across bonnie O an Bay.
Hi we booked for bed and breakfast and sorry to say it we didn’t get breakfast as they say it wasn’t booked but to be fair we didn’t get charged by the hotel who charged us £476. 92 we would be grateful if you could refund the difference please And to say our stay was lovely
To many doors to open while pushing a walker.
Great Western Hotel Oban
It is an old building with a lot of history that will treat each person a bit differently. While it is modernised and they certainly have some very nice and "modern" rooms, I stayed in a small single room which you might not know even exists in the hotel. So you should keep these points in mind if you're planning on staying alone. The room suited me fine enough and I had an absolutely fantatic view, however the only place in the room without squeaky floorboards was the bathroom and on the bed and I could also hear my neighbours floors squeaking and anyone who walked past in the hallway. That being said, my only real problem was that it was way too light in the room at night and this made me sleep poorly, the door unfortunately didnt stop the outside hallway light enough and there is a green light indicator next to the door that I wasnt sure what it did, this light also majorly contributed to lighting up the room far too much and there didnt appear to be a way to turn it off for more than some amount of minutes before coming back on. Apart from that all the staff seemed kind and professional. And it was very clean.
Historic building. Good location. Bathrooms / showers / plumbing need some updating.
Some staff were excellent:- Bar staff & Night porter. Breakfast lady was a bit angry about everything! Check in receptionist wasn’t very friendly, especially when talking about the parking!
Close proximity to the Oban Distillery, plus it is on the waterfront making it easy to go for a stroll and visit the many small shops and restaurants. Old hotel vibe and a clean and functional room.
Grand old hotel for a weekend stay. Walkable from train and ferry terminal.
Dated hotel in poor condition. Stained carpet, cracked basin, peeling lino, shower curtain - Great Wesrern? Not sure what your definition of 'great' is.
No on site parking available so we had to park in public car park along the road even though my wife is disabled. Room had wallpaper/paint flaking from walls. Window frame was rotten and filled with paper. Breakfast ingredients were of very poor quality and not the usual choice you would get in most hotels. Good views ( through the filthy windows) would not stay here again. Oban is lovely though. Just stay at a different hotel.
Expensive hotel for condition of bedrooms
Tired hotel, they have started to upgrade bedrooms but we had one that had not been touched, dirty carpets, mould in bathroom and dirty windows with worm stained dark furniture and in need of a new bedroom door
Good location with great breakfast! Unfortunately the room itself was quite poor and not worth the money.
staff was great fun. Arrived Sept.2 for only 1 night.Wanted to stay for a few days but everything was booked. I got great help to find my next hotel.I can't remember the name of your front desk guy but he had a great sense of humour and really was helpful.Loved the wait staff at dinner in fact I came back again a few days later for dinner.Loved the history.
Good location. However the hotel needs a refurbishment.
Amazing place !! From the front desk with Ruaridh and Rylie ( actually they are the most helpful receptionists very attentive and friendly) to the breakfast staff superb! I felt comfortable and relaxed and definitely will come back!
It was a simple and easy hotel. Under staffed but everyone was pleasant. Because of parking issues, they had reserved spots for guests who had not arrived; but one would no know that until they went inside. The reservations were messed up between the hotel and Expedia with no options to change but that is life sometimes. I saw a ghost in the night, of a young Victorian woman with hat and long dress. The dress was high necked and had ruffles. She was holding the hand of a young boy who had on knickers. Pretty rewarding! Sue 8/26/24
Near the bay, near shops, got my dog with me,. Ye the rooms are a wee bit run down but its a place to sleep.
Good location. Staff was excellent
No one informed us that parking was first come first served and payable. Our tv had no remote and it took two requests to get this sorted. Ramp walkway was damaged and dangerous. The carpets were filthy and disgusting. Beds and bedding fine. Staff, bar one, very pleasant and helpful. Overall impression very poor. Will not return. We were told it’s changing hands but that is no excuse for the above.
Staff themselves were fine. The hotel requires maintenance and car parking for all guests rather than me spend a night worrying about my car being in a council car park amongst all the drunkards I could hear. Water stained room ceiling and what looked like a blood stain in the bath but turned out to be missing enamel Good breakfast selection but none of it hot, not even the coffee. I'll not be returning to this hotel
Great location Welcoming staff.
Located across from the waterfront. Easy access to shopping and beautiful views.
Overnight Stay
Overnighter on way back to London. Comfortable enough stay, decent room overlooking the sea, good breakfast and overall satisfactory stay. Hotel a bit tired in places as is the room but for 1 night ok Would stay again
Extremely disappointed. No parking as advertised. Room not clean. Bathroom smelled of sewage. I did not stay two nights as planned. Only one. I requested a refund for the second night.
.
My husband and I recently stayed at the Great Western Hotel, Oban in August 2024. We booked and paid for a superior room with sea view prior to our stay. We were extremely disappointed with the condition of the room and how filthy it was. To start with the bath water wouldn’t stay in because of a faulty plug, under the rim of the toilet bowl was absolutely disgusting, the shower screen would not open past the taps, the grout and the silicone was mouldy, bath panel had water damage, carpet had big bleach mark and was stained throughout and was frayed round the edges, the fire escape window in the bedroom would not stay open (nothing to hold it up ), draught coming through window had to be plugged up with toilet paper, bedroom walls badly needed painting. Hotel corridors also badly needed painting. Carpets on staircase are threadbare, wallpaper coming away from the walls (in the corridors). Outside handrail was held together with gaffer tape.. Don’t waste your hard earned cash on this substandard hotel with incompetent staff.
The room was very noisy as the floor boards in the room above creaked throughout the night. There was no lock on the window and the window lead straight to a roof valley, so the room could have been accessed from outside. There was no heat regulator on the hot water tap in the sink, so water was very hot. Overall, the hotel looked tired and decor needed updating.
A listed building, a once very beautiful and grand hotel is positioned on the beautiful seafront. Unfortunately it has had some major flood damage at some point and is yet to be rectified. The maintenance has sadly been neglected and needs a complete overhaul by the new owners. It has changed hands and has very friendly and accommodating staff. The food and buffet breakfasts were lovely and plentiful. Unfortunately the cleanliness was extremely poor with no excuse for the fresh dust and old grime on the woodwork and in particular the skirting boards in the bathroom ( months of not dusting/wiping over has caused ingrained dirt). Once the new owners do all the maintenance ( and have a word with the cleaners), this will be an absolutely wonderful hotel to stay in. The beds seem to have been replaced very recently and are just so comfortable.
The hotel is in a great location, staff were really friendly but hotel and certainly the room I was in requires modernisation and redecoration, old and tired springs to mind, limited parking at front of hotel is convenient
We had a sea view room & travelled with our little dog .staff friendly & helpful . Loved the view from our window
that you had to book parking at the hotel which cost £6 per night .or go to a car park and pay parking. the food was average . the room we had did not have a good view. although the lounge and dining room had great views.
No parking available despite what booking says. We were told they would try to reserve a sport for us on the second day and to come back later to ask for it. When we went back, we were told rudely that they don't reserve spots (despite the explicit directive by staff The day before) but you could clearly see several empty spots blocked with cones (reserved spots) in the front. The whole hotel is rundown and dirty. There are weird stains on the carpets and mold on the window corners. We even had mold on our showerhead and there was lots of dust in the corners of every room. We are generally not picky but this was the worst accommodation we stayed at.
Was assured at time of booking that I would have a parking space - there were none left when I arrived and the receptionist couldn't care less and told me to park in the paid public car park next door. The place is in need of a total refurb. Would have been spectacular in its day but is very run down and dated. My room - supposedly a 'Deluxe Double' was grim. Lovely view out to sea through rotten, draughty windows. Dirty carpet, filthy bathroom, cups stained and looked like they'd not been washed. Bed wasn't even put together properly. TV cut out when i used the hairdryer. Grossly overpriced with unhelpful staff. Room was freezing cold and heater in bathroom didn't work either. No hot water in the morning. The only saving grace for this place is the location and the views.
Location and views - pleasant staff
Water pouring down inside the bedroom
Good enough for the cost and friendly staff. Some parts showing their age, stair carpet, creaking floors but probably to be expected in a property of this age
The breakfast was delicious with a wide selection
Didn’t like that the ceiling was leaking in water and needs updating
What I enjoyed most about the Great Western Hotel was the friendliness of the Staff. They were all friendly and kind, and Amy went above and beyond any hotel personn
Last minute booking, the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The room was spacious and had a beautiful view. The hotel is a few minutes from shops and restaurants

Freezing room
Check in was ok, additional payment for parking which I thought was very cheeky as we already paid £110 for a double room, the room was needing a good renovation, last decorated in the 80’s I think, thick dust on pictures, stains on carpets, holes in curtains, half the lights didn’t work, windows are rotten which allow lots of cold air in, wash hand basin filled up when upstairs ran water, only half a shower screen so the floor was swimming, even worse the heating in the room didn’t work, complained a few times times before we got an electric heater which was as much good as chocolate fire guard this was end of January, the only good thing was the staff
