Fantastic location, beautiful room with a huge bathtub! Food was delicious, self-serve breakfast is very convenient. Nice points of interest within walking distance.
Great place to stay, very welcoming, warm and inviting. Really enjoyed my stay. Lovely comfortable beds.
Great value room, clean and spacious
Tooked away pit stop in charming location
Check in very easy, room nice and comfortable with all you'd need for a pleasant stay although room was cold and heating didn't appear to be on, towel rail in bathroom also not on. I think if I was staying longer i would have said about it to the staff Food was good, reasonably priced too and not a complaint at all, but dont be fooled into thinking the Yorkshire pudding pie is actually a pie, its filling in an upside-down yorkshire on top of mash 😋 Staff were getting some grief off other customers about petty things like this but they handled it well and i thought all was good
Give it a miss
Check in was done on line was abaout the best experience of this place. We stayed in the Annex across the court yard the smell was unreal was of old damp musty the room was spacious but the smell was in the room too not as strong as the landing and stairs shower was nice but the tray filled up quick and the water ebbed onto the floor probably why the place smell damp and foisty the food was of good taste but the waitress messed the order up and what we got wasn't what we ordered the IPA was nice and the wine it was valentines night the candles on the table were dead and we had to ask for a fresh one and for it to be lit all the table candles seemed to be the same breakfast was terrible cold and bland the toaster didn't work there was no coffee not a full English breakfast all at once was very mishmashed waiting for the chef to bring out sausage and bacon couple of choices of teas but no earl grey there was minimal selection of continental offering with no pastries I would stay again but I'd maybe order from a different menu and skip the breakfast when you go in a restaurant and get handed a menu only to find 3 of the 4 items you want are not available is pretty poor this is the worst best western I've stayed at out of 5 I'd give it a generous 2 only because the IPA was nice
George Piercebridge
Had stayed here a number of years ago before it closed. Was delighted to see that the main building which is full of character, had not been remodelled or modernised and all the great features retained. Especially the Grandfather clock. Great to have a pet friendly place to eat and stay. Friendly helpful staff. Will stay again.
MEDIOCRE
Have stayed here a few times. Ususally good. Room 226 is very noisy - upstairs floorboards squeak badly. Pillows have done their time. Toilet seat was loose. Sink taps need a good clean undeerneath. Radiator had a few very noisy moments. The breakfast room was deathly silent and cold. Breakfast was mediocre. Not the best way to start the day
fine family meet up place
it suited us fine for a family meet-up. a slight sadness was that we weren't able to use the river view restaurant for my daughters birthday evening meal but were very happy with the standard of the food served in the other room. some rooms were rather hot and another rather cool but no so much that we needed to get assistance
Great little night away with a warm and friendly welcome, the steak was superb.
Definitely won’t be back. The only good thing was the room was clean and spacious. However we were moved from an upstairs room to a downstairs room because there was no remote for the tv. We then had a pretty much sleepless night because whoever was in the room above was walking around frequently and the creaking floorboards woke us up. As well as that there was no heating in the room and no hot water for the whole stay, not good for an elderly couple on a cold February night. We stayed as a break on a long journey from Scotland to London but didn’t feel either rested or refreshed to resume the journey. Will be making an official complaint.
The staff are really friendly and the food is excellent quality and value for money.
Dirty room, curtains, bed and broken curtain and shower. Tried hotel but could be clean.
Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean with a lovely little balcony and amazing views over the river. Evening meal and breakfast were both beautiful. The staff were very friendly and attentive.
Mike Business Trip
The room was large and so was the bathroom. It was not very warm at 9pm on an evening when i was sat at the desk doing paperwork. Then on one night there was no heating at all and unsble to take a shower. It was really cold and i was unable to dleep very much at all. I complained and was told "dont worry we have it logged with our maintenace team!" No mention of a refund partial or otherwise. I really should have taken yhis further, but, was busy and really should not need to. This is yhe hotels respondibility to offer recompense. To be fair the problem was fixed the next day. But this is a very old building and the room was still cold on an evening. Pleasant staff, beautiful area around the Hotel and its on the banks of the River Tees. Great views from the restaurant ar breakfast time if you can stand the cold! But, i would certainly visut again, but only in summer.
The property is very old and in need of some refurbishment. Having said that it was absolutely fine for my needs and staff were friendly.
Ideal short stay
Stayed for 2 nights while doing some training in Stockton. Comfortable, convenient and located in nice area. Food served was delicious also. Would book again if I'm in the area again.
Stayed for 2 nights as in the area for work. The room was clean, comfortable and I slept well. There was a couple of items in the room that made it look a little tired. Food in the bar was amazing, nice place to do work in the evening and have a beer. The staff were lovely and helpful could not of asked for anything more. Also very well priced. If I'm back in the area would definitely stop again. Thanks
Review
Comfortable room not serviced whilst i stayed there staff friendly
Very good
Great value for a high quality stay
Great value for money
Was perfect , clean quit and comfortable Great value for money
Lovely room and breakfast. Thank you.
Don’t think they actually want guests.
Booked and paid extra for a riverveiw room with a balcony, Was given a room with a view of a hedge on ground floor. When I went to reception to ask if they were mistaken the woman was so unbothered and simply said “yeah we give someone else your room” no sorry no remedy just like it or lump it. The room smealt of damp bathroom was grotty and whole room weirdly infested with lady birds. When saw state of room we cancelled or dinner reservations and went to bridge inn 10 minutes away (worth the drive) if it wasn’t New Year’s Eve we would have likely swapped hotel too. Breakfast wasn’t great, not terrible but just again like they couldn’t be bothered.
Lovely pub open fire easy to find and check in nice warm clean room lovely breakfast
Very friendly staff, good food at reasonable price. We stayed in the cottage, which has the benefit of a full size hot tub
Wonderful place
Wonderful place with wonderful staff. Food was delicious and value for money. Most special thing is very friendly staff.
Great stay with family and friends
It was good to stay in an historic inn. I thought the bedroom and en suite were excellent for an old building The breakfast was very good
Recommend lovely stay
Relaxing comfortable stay - big spacious room, with balcony - very comfortable bed, friendly staff, added bonus of breakfast included.
What a gem of a place - would recommend
The room we had was amazing, very spacious, with a sofa and chairs, as well as the sleeping area. The bed was so comfortable. The bathroom was huge with double sized everything (apart from the loo!!). Everything was spotless and clean too. The breakfast had a good selection of food, cereals, cooked food and pastries. We loved the filter coffee too. Breakfast was in the riverview room, which was a little cold, however, with storm Darragh blowing a gale outside it was unsurprising with the hotel being an old building. With views of the river, it made a very peaceful setting. We had a meal in the restaurant one evening, which my husband said was lovely, however, as i'd not been well, the hotel were more than happy to made me toast. We will definitely look to stay again, hopefully completing some of the local walks from the hotel.
Friendly and professional staff at all times.
Lovely staff and meals
Pre Christmas escape
Night away dodging the parents, pre Christmas ensuring our cat is ok
Lovely,,
Good
Stay here I casio ally very clean and friendly and affordable
Amazing night away
Amazing stay at The George…. Beautiful room and the whole hotel was so cosy!! Log fires and a very nice bar area. Breakfast was great and we had that overlooking the river. Would definitely stay again!!
Carpet in bed room looking very tired.
Ease of parking
Great location and value for money. Food and service excellent
Lovely hotel and staff were very friendly. Was kept awake by noise from the bar.
Very efficient and friendly staff and very fine pub food.
Great hotel
Lovely hotel with wood burning fires in the bar area- excellent room - very comfortable bed - clean - ambient bar - great breakfast- lovely area and views
Very nice hotel, friendly staff & good service. Our room was clean and spacious, the bed was really comfortable. The only fault I could mention, is that it wasn't quite warm enough, but the little heater helped! We were delighted to find an open fire in the bar area, very cosy indeed. would definitely stay again.
Quaint and nice
Lovely little venue. Nice food. Friendly staff
Party hotel - don't stay if you're a light sleeper
Very noisy directly underneath my room until almost 2am. When asked if I could have a quieter room the next day I was told that there was nothing going on and that loud conversation had been heard from my room! Considering I am a solo traveller and had been trying to work all evening with noise cancelling headphones on (and no speaking) this was very odd. Hotel is really nice and rooms are clean and comfortable. I have previously enjoyed a meal and the delightful ambience in the bar. Was considering staying here very regulary (I currently spend 4/5 nights a week at Scotch Corner and fancied a break) however the noise was dreadful. There was a party on Saturday night and several of the guests decided to have a screaming match right outside my bedroom door. Nothing the hotel could do about that BUT the noise from the bar was something they could have apologised for and moved me if possible. After two nights of very little work and very little sleep I left and will not be back. It's a shame but the staff really let this place down.
The George is one of the best places I have stayed in. From start to finish (7 night work stay) the staff, facilities, food were well above what I had expected. I would be looking to stay here again if I am required back in the area.
Fantastic stay at The George
This was a fantastic stay! Our room was spacious for a family of 4 and warm for our arrival. The beds were really comfortable and extra pillows were provided. We added on breakfast to our stay for just £14 for 4 of us and we had a great selection of full English and continental foods it was self service and freshly prepared. Perfect for families with young children.
Great staff. The area. Parking.
Nice pub
Friendly and helpful staff
Lovely clean room, friendly staff.
This property was very central for my visits in the area, quiet area. smelled a bit musty, not totally surprising for a property by the river...not very sound proof, but again not unexpected as its an old building. It has the Grandfather clock, from the song "my grandfathers clock"
What a gem
Last minute booking due to traffic chaos. What a gem. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The setting and village are a delight. The breakfast was magnificent and total value for money. Would stay there again.
Nice spacious room. Facilities good. No dining facilities on Sunday evening.
2nd time we stayed ere this time we stayed in the cottge part with 2 double beds lovely and spacious and nice and warm great shower nice big tv with netflix pub is nice and chilled also good for dogs will defintly be back again
Would recommend
Lovely place. Great staff, nice room, lovely food (bfast particularly). Shower really good - hot and good volume Bed comfortable
Weekend break
Very old building a bit tired but with plenty of character. The staff we had contact with were welcoming, friendly and helpful. The restaurant food was very good and we had a very enjoyable stay.
Quirky rooms, but the whole place is in need of a bit of TLC (nothing major...just feels outdated). Rooms not well soundproofed, but this is to be expected with an older building. Security not great because some doors are unlocked and some require keyfob access.
Everything was great, !! my only issue was the room was so hot, and you couldn’t adjust the temperature yourself !! No thermostats on the radiators! Even with the windows open ( didn’t open very far) was still too hot for our liking!!! Apart from that great place to stay and eat, food was amazing !!!!
Lovely stay
Another great stay, friendly welcoming staff makes all the difference when travelling solo
Business
Nice clean room. Good food
Property was well maintained, staff was fantastic. We stayed in the cottage. Would definitely stay again
very nice hotel, the food was excellent and the staff very helpful. will definitively recommend it.
Clean accommodation and great food. Would stay again
Great hotel stay
Stayed for a training course so long intensive days. The great thing about the George is the friendly atmosphere created by the team here. Found it to be a friendly relaxing environment, especially as a lone female. Nothing was too much trouble. Great bar too. Menu choices for evening meal lovely - something for everyone not just pub grub. Breakfast was substantial with some days breakfast cooked to order otherwise a buffet.
Absolutely fantastic service. Great breakfast and lovely quiet room. Definitely will come back.
Quiet location, friendly staff, good food
Check-in was quick, but we are still waiting for the return of the card-deposit charge they took slmost two weeks ago . Peaceful location. Stayed in an external unit along with the family dog, no heating in the room (ok for one night). Very friendly and helpful staff and the evening meal was excellent. It's a dog friendly place, but we didn't find couldn't find any external bins to deposit the bags (staff member kindly took them away and disposed of them). This might explain why others are not clearing up after their dogs.
What a great hotel, great service the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Clean throughout the hotel, the bits we could see, and the room. Room was comfortable, clean with tea/coffee facility and a nice view. We had an evening meal as well as breakfast both had a good selection and very nice. If we ever need a place to stay in the area again we wuld definitely rebook
Outstandingly good staff
A stay of two halves. The double room in the main building was tiny, the other room we booked for our son in an annex was fantastic. No toilet roll or remote control for the tv in our room (but swiftly rectified by lovely staff) and really cold (fine when radiator turned up to 11) other room toasty and fully equipped. Bar full so sat in slightly odd and draughty restaurant but staff improvised to ensure we could eat and the food was excellent.
The George is a lovely old building but needed a bit of tlc in places. The room was comfortable and in a quiet position with parking right outside the room. The setting of the hotel is beautiful- next to the river in a lovely little village but there are no other amenities nearby. The food was nice enough although my gammon was overcooked and a little dry. The breakfast was plentiful and there was lots of choice. The staff were friendly and helpful.
A one-time coaching inn now quietly situated a short distance from the A1M motorway. It is a charming property, clean and well appointed, friendly staff and having an excellent menu. Highly recommended.
Curtains were hanging off in the bedroom. No lighting outside so couldnt see when looking for hotel room. Mould in the bathroom. Freezing cold . Not told what time breakfast was or check out, had to go and ask. Card wouldnt work both nights! Wouldnt stay again.
Fabulous place. Would stay again
Fantastic cosy feel as soon as you walk in. Very welcoming friendly and helpful staff. Rooms very quaint but clean and comfortable. Dogs were made very welcome. Even had water bowls and biscuits for them
2night stay hotel is in a lovely place but does not make the most of the view of Roman bridge Breakfast 1st day was terrible worse scramble egg I have ever seen lam a retired salesman.2nd day had to wait as all food was taken except the scrambled eggs. Room was large and ok Hotel could do with a lick of paint outside inside nice period look
Good for families
Nice hotel.Good breakfast and comfortable room
Shabby room and poor service
Apparently the hotel has recently changed management, however unfortunately nothing has been updated yet and the hotel room we had was very shabby. All the furniture had sections of veneer missing or chips, the toilet roll holder slightly hanging off, there was black mould in the bathroom, no bath, the curtains had missing curtain hooks and big pulls in them, there were no bedside lights, only one desk light that had an extremely bright daylight bulb in it. There was only a tiny piece of toilet paper left on the roll, I requested more paper I was told they couldn’t find any as no one knew where the key was for the cupboard, someone did eventually bring down an industrial sized roll designed for a public toilet dispenser, which is what we were left with for the entirety of the stay. We had dinner in the restaurant one night and unfortunately they were busy with a “launch event” for the new management. This meant that we were very much ignored. Again we were told, “we’re busy and it’s new management” and the lady running the restaurant was very apologetic though. I hate complaining, and really don’t do it often, but I worked many years in hospitality in the past and during our short stay at The George there was just a continuous catalogue of poor service and poor quality experience, which is such a shame as the hotel has really potential with a beautiful stream and garden out the back.
Nice place, clean and website info was accurate.
Welcome on arrival did not set out breakfast or checkpout times. Check out was fine.
Great stay, large rooms, had terrible night sleep as mattress so hard hurt my back
We had a lovely stay with our dog, who was also made welcome. The staff were friendly and approachable. We had Sunday lunch which we thought was lovely. We only stayed for one evening, but wouldn't hesitate to recommend. The hotel does need some TLC, but our room was modern and so clean. The Hotel setting, on the river is so peaceful and pretty. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious, and worth having to set you up for the day. Would stay again without hesitation.
Bad hotel
It was poor no help with cases to the room shower disgusting window latches hanging off food poor will not stay again
Whistle stop but slept well.
Whistle stop as arrived late and left early so can’t comment on food offerings. The room was comfortable enough, bit of damp build up in the bathroom, but otherwise clean. Could hear the people above so thin walls/floor but thankfully wasn’t surrounded by anyone being intentionally loud etc. Staff friendly, bed comfortable and beautiful area... Would visit again.
Accommodation was clean & spacious with easy parking access to room.Staff in the bar gave excellent service
Great overnight stay for scarfell great place very dog friendly lovely staff the lovely lady who borrowed us a dog lead the ace barman super breakfast to fuel us up in the morning free parking great reasonably priced food on the evening what’s not to like
Very quiet room with a good size room
Food wasn’t that great for the price
The room we stayed in was dated and hadn’t been cleaned. The headboard had weeks of thick dust on it, cobwebs in all the lamps. The bathroom had grout missing out of all the tiles, the sink was cracked. There was a build up of gunk on the soap dispenser. Definitely need to sack the cleaner!!!!
Lovely stay and the hotel room was comfortable and nicely decorated. Staff very helpful
Work and a break away from home
Checked in and found room with a shower was a little bit small , staff couldn't be more accommodating, sorting us a new room which was absolutely perfect , staff are all very courteous and friendly , as well as the local clientele in bar , overall a very nice place with nice people and lovely food
One night stay very comfortable
Staff all very attentive
Good, last minute booking
Had to change rooms due to cleanliness, second room was great. Staff were amazing, friendly and helpful. Lovely river and scenery
Good value for money
I always choose this gem when I’m working in the area, great value for money, spacious rooms and always clean. Good freshly prepared wvening food, and a good selection of drinks is to be had. I stopped Sunday to Tuesday night and the pub was lively. The Sunday dinner looked fab and Great breakfast too.
Overall quite good
Overall quite good. Single glass windows so made the room noisey, lacking a mirror in the bedroom. Breakfast wasn’t the best but ok., don’t order poached or fried eggs, they came over cooked 🙈 Tea however was Amazing!!!
It provided what was needed. No time to explore.
As a family of six we used the George as a one night stop over. Did exactly what we needed it to do. Room was next to road so slightly noisy. Kids enjoyed breakfast and a good shower. Room was clean and comfortable.
Disappointing stay
Breakfast was challenging had to continually remind staff about the lack of food on display. The bedroom was not attended every day, the cups and glasses were not changed or cleaned.
Given wrong room at check-in. Public areas needs a good clean. Slow service at dinner and breakfast. We had to fix curtains to rail in order to close them.
Wedding Anniv visit.
Easy to find pub/hotel with plenty parking availability. Very quick and capable booking in by staff.. Problem identified with room choice but manager intervened and agreement quickly made to booking (the error is the only reason I opted for 4 instead of 5 stars). All staff very welcoming and caring and although not the original choice of room we found it extremely clean and adequate for our needs. Beer selection very good, very attentive staff and excellent parmo and fish/chips with similar standard for the full English the following morning. We will return!
Great stay
Great stay - friendly staff and great location
Lovely place
Lovely place very historic
The staff were lovely. The food was great The hotel is a bit run down but in a gorgeous location and full of character Sadly when I stayed there were 10 selfish individuals who felt it was ok to run around all night playing music and slamming doors What a shame and how selfish 😢

We had an excellent stay. A very cosy and friendly atmosphere, and all staff were excellent. We would definitely return for further visits.
