Great stay
Perfect location. Walking distance to the beach, the bars, and the restaurants. Very clean in the pool was refreshing on hot days. Highly recommend.
Super endroit!
Très bien situé, près de tout. Je recommande fortement cet hotel. Nous avons passé 2 jours et nous y retourneront l'année prochaine assurémment. Personnels très gentil et sympatique :) Merci encore !
The road in front is very muddy
We only stayed for one night but it was perfect. Maggie checked us in and she was very kind & did a through job of showing us the place and amenities and was easy to get in touch with to communicate. She had a great sense of humor & was very patient and even carried my suitcase from my car to my room. This place was very clean and looks exactly like the pictures. The lights at night around the pool are very beautiful. It is so convenient how walking distance close it is to all the shops and food places around Tamarindo. Would love to stay again!
It was okay for our one night but I would not be comfortable staying there longer . There were many problems with my first room and I had to be switched . Breakfast was not good.
An enjoyable stay at In the Shade Hotel
Our stay here was great, well advertised to what it is. Staff is helpful and kind. Good food and smoothies available at price. Pool was enjoyable and clean. About 5 minute walk to the beach. There is a restaurant beside the hotel so there is a dull sound of music in the evenings. I am a light sleeper and did not find this a problem. Bed is firm but was not a problem either. We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it. The hotel also had good wifi, so my husband could do some work and also stream movies and sports games.
Great location within short walking distance of restaurants, grocery store and beach is not much further. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Free coffee in the mornings to enjoy on your balcony or beside the pool is a nice touch. Not a lot of shade mid day to be able to lounge around the pool but perfect time to take a siesta or go exploring.
Excellent stay. Perfect location and amazing staff. Will stay again
Solid hotel
Friendly and helpful staff. Rooms are simple (bed, desk, telly, bathroom) but comfortable and all border the pool. Food was generous but average (we only had breakfast, but they also have a lunch menu I believe).
Hotel is in a good location and staff are very friendly. The rooms are also very clean and there is a nice pool and cafe. Only issue was the water pressure wasn’t great but overall enjoyed the hotel.
This is a gem of a place. Adults only!! Perfect location in Tamarindo, close to everything you want or need, within waking distance of everything. The staff is amazing!! Thank you to Maggie & all the staff. We will definitely be back to stay here.
location was great.
Was stopped by corrupt policia and had to pay money to leave there custody Very scary and I also had a extreme reaction to mosquitoes bites turning into large blisters all overy leg
Excellent staff. Very clean and quiet. Good WiFi.
This hotel is amazing. Perfectly located to central Tamarindo and In very easy walking distance to the bars, beach and shops (all within 5 mins) (genuinely 5 mins too) The hotel is clean and comfortable with great staff and excellent facilities. Including a co working space (desks and office space with a view of the pool, in a very cool air conditioned space) There is no gym, however energy fitness is literally 5 minute walk away and is only $30 USD for a week pass. I am a frequent traveler and very picky with hotels but you can rest assured that this one is great. I would recommend booking any excursions through the hotel as they secure excellent rates and email you a payment link to securely pay online. I would recommend booking your airport transfer through them too. If you can pay them in Cash ($USD) and you get a generous discount. But you can pay by card no problem. Rich
Quality stay
Really nice hotel, super well located. Pool is amazing food too. Definitely recommend
Overall good, but weak shower operation and noisy neighboring properties.
Last Minute Vacation
About 5 days before my departure date I got lucky and found an opening at his hotel at a good price. I didn’t know what to expect before arriving, but I have to say I was impressed throughout the week. I’d say the biggest pros to staying here were - The customer service. Maggie went above and beyond to make the trip more enjoyable. From giving us a rundown of the hotel and the town, to a surprise dessert one afternoon after coming back from the beach, to helping me book shuttles - The community pool was really relaxing and quiet throughout the day - The hotel has a good selection of breakfast meals on their menu. The cook did a great job. Also, free coffee before 10:30! - Filtered water was available 24/7 in the lobby area - The hotel also had a social event for all guests the Thursday evening I was there. It was a good opportunity to meet other people
Will definitely be back.
Great stay. Everything you could ask for in a hotel in Tamarindo Clean. Great staff. FANTASTIC location. The breakfast was amazing as well Sandra & Maggie deserve extra kudos for their pleasant demeanour and helpfulness
Awesome place.
The place was beautiful, breakfast was the best in Tamarindo we had. The property was clean, the co-working space was great. I really enjoyed meeting new people at the sunset and drinks event that they hosted, that was a cherry on top. They provided snacks and drinks on the house which was so thoughtful. Everything was walking distance. Fully recommend.
Tout était parfait
A cozy place to call home while in Tamarindo
There’s a vibe that captures you and makes you want to stay. Draws a certain kind of traveler…chill, friendly folk. Digital Nomad’s paradise with a great place, next to the pool, to set up office. Great location close to the beach, plenty of restaurants and shops. Food is delicious! Friendly staff. VERY Clean rooms. Patrick, the owner, is a great dude! We will definitely be back. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking to chill, meet great people and get some online work done while I’m CR
I generally don’t write reviews but had to do one for this hotel. It’s by far one of my favorites because the experience felt so humanized. It is a great place to stay and the staff are amazing! This is especially great for solo travelers like myself. It is safe, clean, rooms are modern and I was able to make a lot of friends during my stay. It really felt like a community. It’s walking distance from the beach and extremely close to restaurants and nightlife in Tamarindo. The pool is located perfectly in the middle of the property and allows for a nice space to hangout on a hot sunny day when you need a break from the beach. I absolutely recommend!!!
Great place, amazing location. Maggie was helpful with booking excursions and any wants or needs I may of needed, even after I needed to switch to a different hotel. Would definitely recommend.
This is the second time that I have stayed at ITS. The hotel is beautiful, clean, and an outstanding value for the price. The owner/management are amazing, ensuring that all of your needs are met. The pool is really incredible. Inside the room, the bed is comfortable and the shower is big. There is a microwave and refrigerator in the room, and outside on the patio, a sink and 2 but er stove and drawers with any dishes you will need if you decide to cook or bring something home to eat. There's really only 2 things that I don't think are great, and neither has anything specifically to do with the hotel. The hotel's location is off a side street and only a quick 5 minute walk to central Tamarindo. The street is in bad condition, especially after a rain. The other is not being able to flush paper down the toilet, which is very common at small hotels (and homes!) in Costa Rica. Just can't get used to throwing it in the garbage. But once again, this isn't ITS's issue, more of a Costa Rican issue in general. The great things about this hotel far exceed anything negative, especially the staff. Will definitely stay here again, and again, and again... Every time I am in Tamarindo, I will be a loyal customer at In The Shade!
Great location. Few minutes walking to the town's main hot spots. Room is modern and cozy. Property is safe and secure. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Makes you feel like a family instead of a guest!!!
Friendly and helpful staff, very good service.
Great service! Hotel owner and manager provide useful tips and help guest make the most of their trip.
Overall a great experience. Will stay again- good location, clean, safe, comfortable.
Beautiful property surrounded by nature. Good size room with a big bathroom. Very clean and peaceful. The view of the volcano is amazing and the staff is really friendly. We loved our stay. Thank you!
My friend and I brought our 2 teenage boys to Tamarindo for their graduation present. We stayed at In the Shade for 10 sun filled days. The staff are amazing and eager to help with booking excursions and drivers. The owner Patrick and his lovely wife Michelle are so warm, giving us some amazing recommendations from fun activities with our boys to places to eat to fill their bottomless appetites. Thank you Patrick, Michelle, Maggie, Sandra and Luca for making the 4 of us feel at home in your lovely hotel. The beds were so comfortable, the food was delicious, the pool was divine. The towel service was a nice touch, as well as the filtered water provided in the cowork space (bring your hydro flask). The location is a 5 minute walk to the beach (cut through the farmers market- we didn’t figure this out until the end of our stay). Close to restaurants and bars. The Saturday farmers market was less than a block from our door. The Thursday evening social that Patrick and Michelle host rack week ends with a walk to the night market (a five minute walk away). This place truly felt like our home away from home. We will be back!
Absolutely great stay at in the shade. The staff (Omar, Sandra, Maggie) and owner Patrick were amazing! Would highly recommend and go back! Thanks again!
The shower head barely worked had to go outside and showered..
Very nice property Friendly owners
Great location right off Main Street in tamarindo. Nice, clean hotel.
This place is excellent. A perfect location in Tamarindo walking distance to all the restaurants and bars but also super chill and quiet. It's just far enough to be a perfect sanctuary to relax and reboot during the day. Super comfortable beds which really matters when you're surfing every day. Great co-work space and super solid internet. I don't even like staying in Tamarindo usually but this place changed my mind. I will be back for sure.
We had a family emergency a week prior to reservations and they refused to refund our money. A week is plenty of notice and we had an emergency. Poor business. Would not recommend.
This hotel was great one of the best I’ve stayed at cleanliwise. Internet was really great. Only thing I would recommend is complimentary breakfast.
Hi, I love staying at this hotel for work, I think everything is excellent but if you'll be selling food you better hire someone that know how to do it. I ordered two things and both where like really bad. Thanks.
The new owner has an entire lifetime of experience around the world within the hospitality industry. It's a great place for professional solo travellers and couples looking for a boutique feel in a quiet area near great food. The co-working space is gorgeous, and the team is very friendly. Definitely a great place to meet people, enjoy a quiet place amongst the hustle and bustle of Tamarindo.
This hotel is an Oasis. It is quiet and peaceful yet steps away from everything you will want to see in Tamarindo! The amenities are abundant. My every need was taken care of. Great WiFi, delicious coffee and smoothies, new modern rooms with huge bathrooms and beautiful showers. The staff is also most friendly. You won’t regret a stay here!
Great lap pool!
Overall good a bit expensive for what it was
This Hotel is so so BEAUTIFUL!.., wonderfully Clean….UNIQUE and Lovely as the Owner Tina😘❤️!! She has made it feel more like a Bed & Breakfast Home and runs it as such:)!… then a Hotel. The vibe is such Real Love and Care for your stay!…♥️❤️♥️❤️…. It’s so conveniently close to the market/ATM -combo (3 minute walk)… Her chef and breakfast is AMAZING REFRESHING HEALTHY YUMMM! Rooms Great Beds and Pillows!.. Modern cool city feel inside! If I ever am able to make it back?… This may be my last trip outside of the USA… because of possible mandatory vaccines:(…but if by chance?…. I wouldn’t go anywhere else, I would want to have my family or friends experience this EXCEPTIONAL HOTEL & GENUINE CARE for all who stay….
Exactly as advertised. A great place to work and relax. Incredible staff.
Great Location, walking distance to the main spots
Happy stay for me.
Very nice hotel and great service. I'd have to think hard for any disappointments. And close proximity to town and an all-around good stay depending on what your comfort is all about
Just like home
Exceptional hospitality. Will stay here again for sure!
We loved everything about it!
This place is centrally located and an easy walk to the coffee shop and the beach. Plus lots of stores and restaurants super close.
Great stay... The staff was there to help---everyone nice ..Rooms were clean...Would highly recommend--alberto
Restaurant on premises and located in a walkable.location.
Straight forward and great location!
We loved our stay at Hotel In The Shade! While the amenities are somewhat minimalist, the location can’t be beat and the staff was incredible. The only thing I’d suggest changing was the unusual payment process used here. Even after booking with a credit card on a booking platform like Hotels.com, they require you to either pay in cash upon arrival or pay an additional 11% fee if you want to pay via credit card. Great property but this payment situation would give me pause about staying in the future with so many other options in the area that accept card without a fee
Room was comfortable and quiet, even though outside there was music, you couldn't hear a thing inside the room. Small and cozy, perfect for a quick get away for young couples, but not to stay in all day. The hotel is basic, although very comfortable and a nice pool, but the restaurant and staff is not present. There's no front desk, just the manager that gives you her phone number in case you need anything. She was nice and helpful, but the whole dynamic seemed like a self-service type of hotel. Not sure if it was because of the whole COVID-19 siatuation or not. I have no complaints, the hotel is very centric and you can walk to Tamarindo downtown to all the restaurants, bars and the beach. There's a pharmacy, supermarket, bank and ATM very close by too, so location is very convenient. Recommended for a budget quick get away to Tamarindo!
Perfecto para descansar, para pasar unos días súper relajado!!
Victor and his wife own the property and they were super friendly and terrific hosts. The room was clean and well appointed with huge TV and large shower. It was an excellent experience. Only thing is they do have 2 young children so don't expect a total child free environment.
New property, Clean, Quiet and close to everything!
Great choice if you want to walk everywhere in town
New and.clean. The staff was very attentive to keeping the place clean. They had construction in the parking lot and it rattled the hotel wuite a bit, so it was hars to sleep.or concentrate.
DISGUSTING treatment overall
Overal stay very disappointing, the first part of my stay my shower wasn’t working at all and only a drip of water. The staff are only there until 4-5pm and I booked my taxi in the morning just before 11.40am only waiting over an an hour and a half to leave made me loose my flight costing me 2.5k to get home back to London !!!!!!!!! Absolutely fuming ! NEVER AGAIN would I stay here
We were greeted by friendly staff by the pool upon arrival and the check in process was easy. Reminder: the reservation on Expedia is only a hold, you must pay cash or you’ll get charged an 11% credit card fee. We’d forgotten this but she said we could go get cash and pay the next day so that was nice, there’s a bank nearby where you can withdrawal cash. There were a few ants in the room, but somewhat to be expected in Costa Rica. The walls are thin, you can hear conversations from the pool and there was a restaurant behind our room that we could also hear the kids running around/yelling. They have filtered water available to refill bottles, which is a bonus! We didn’t eat at the cafe but the coffee was good. Easy 2ish blocks walk to the beach and they did provide pool/beach towels. The pool was really nice, too!
Highly recommend staying here
Great hotel in the heart of Tamarindo. Superb staff and very nice owner who are all very helpful and go the extra mile. Highly recommend staying here! We loved itBook the turtle nesting tour with their guide, he was super knowledgeable and taking care that the turtles have their time to make the nest vs. other guides that night were impatient and didn’t care much and almost scared off the turtle.
The pool is beautiful and very well maintained. Th women that run the hotel are extremly friendly and helpful with recommendations for the area. Only complaint was that th Air conditioner and fan were noisy which made it hard to fall asleeep without earplugs
Great place to stay. Highly recommended. Very quit and a safe place to stay. Also walking distance to the beach. The staff was super friendly.
Nice clean hotel , easy access with great staff ,
Very clean and modern, easy check in, and very secure, no tv, but has a fridge.
Everything was amazing here! Great staff! Food is great, rooms are clean, pool is being built, pretty aesthetic to the place.
Cute spot, poor timing. All of the rooms face the pool which was under construction. Not issue about using the pool but a lot of construction noise early morning. It would have been nice to know what we were getting into. Also, the beds are rock hard so if need a little give in your mattress you might be in for a rough night.
Nice place close to beach & town / credit card fee
Pros- Very friendly reception welcome and advice Central location (close to beach and downtown Nice balcony / patio and reception area Rooms are clean and modern Cons- Charges an addition 11% on top of the confirmed hotels.com rate for using a credit card. This should absolutely be disclosed upfront when booking. Rooms are on the small side
Great Place to Stay.
They were so very pleasant and helpful. Went out of their way to accommodate me. Would definitely stay there again. Safe, secure and extremely clean.
In The Shade hotel Tamarindo - Excellent!
Nice hotel close to all. Would be nice if they had a pool but overall great stay!
Helpful staff. The little cafe serves good breakfasts.
Incredible owner/staff. Just flawless. Thanks, guys.
Excelent service very clean, all new, great location
We enjoyed our stay at Hotel in the Shade. The room was sufficient, we appreciated the air conditioner and the fridge was nice to store waters and snacks for our beach day. The staff is super nice and the breakfast was particularly great - not only delicious, but healthy. The location is also good (5-10 min walk to beach). Note that they charge a fee for paying with credit card so be sure to bring enough cash with you for your stay. We did have a few ants in our room which was probably because the windows were left open before our check-in, but we understand that happens in Costa Rica as we had this problem at multiple hotels in the country.
Shower did not work.
I feel as though it was very quaint, I enjoyed listening to the birds in the morning chirping. I feel the subtle touches in the courtyard were perfect. I feel the property was well cared for also
From the start we were not welcome. Viktor-the owner- told my friend not to seat in a chair because the chair was up on the table and the fact is that the hair was in the ground for everyone to seat. We were asked to pay extra fees and ignored EXPEDIA’s reservation pricing. There is no lobby, no tv, no chair in the room to seat, soap in the shower is on the floor and the balcony is not secure well. It is a shared balcony which is not secure. Overpriced hotel for what it offers. There is no phone in the room nor there is a line you can call when you have questions. I would not stay at this property again or recommend it to Anyone. The road to the hotel is full of dust and dirty. There are a great number of better places to stain in tamarindo. Viktor was also arguing with me at the breakfast table about a $20 bill which he rudely threw at me at the breakfast table. I had to abandon my breakfast and go to another place to eat. Very disappointing experience.
Viktor and his wife were incredibly helpful during my stay at their beautiful hotel. Some rooms do come with a TV and some don't. WiFi works perfectly, no issues there. Rooms come with towels and standard body wash, shampoo and conditioner. The showers in the washroom were great, no concerns about the water pressure at all. Make sure to try their breakfast menu at The Garden Cafe ( i had the Killer). Oh and don't forget to try their Americano which was one of the best coffees i've ever had. Carry cash on you. There's an additional 11% percent fee (on top of the tax and service charge) if you use your credit card. If you have USD dollars, you will get back your change back in colones (Costa Rica currency), this is standard practice everywhere in Tamarindo, Costa Rica.
Nice
Nice place, breakfast has some different options, place prefers cash as a surcharge applies to credit card
Very good
Great little spot close to everything. The ladies were friendly and helpful with good recommendations. Breakfast at the Garden cafe was very good. WiFi wasn’t so good which was an inconvenience because we had some work to do. But otherwise, a great hotel.
Very close to everything. Down a side dirt road but very safe. Friendly staff, always smiling and accommodating. Room did not have a tv for those who like tv. I don’t so did not bother me at all. Room recently updated and remodeled. Very modern. I’d stay here again. If you actually see a vacancy, book quickly. Rooms go fast!
very surprised to be told on registration that they would accept cash or credit card with a 11% premium for using credit card. not ethical.
Great stay in hotel in the shades, i would have loved to add another night
Great place clean and new very centric and walking distance off everything
Nice hotel and very convenient to everything. Very modern design.
Nice modern place, just note the construction
Nice modern looking room. Only problem was work being done on property which was noisy during day. Staff friendly, reasonable, good location
Good accommodation and close to Tamarindo down a dirt road. Hard to find the first time. Main issue was construction work being undertaken on the site that will last for at least another 6-8 months. Very noisy in the morning they start officially at 8.00 but are there from 6.00 am. Good for one night.
Good hotel - major building works going on which we were not aware off. Room was comfortable and location is close to town, but down a dirt road and was a little difficult to find initially. The host was helpful and we were made to feel welcome.
Mid-May Stay
We had a great stay and this hotel was very clean. I am someone who is very clean, so the cleanliness was fantastic! The only draw-back is there was construction going on adjacent to our room, but we were there in the off-season/beginning of rainy season. Other than that our stay was great!
Fun time
Wonderful owner very friendly cute little restaurant, great location
Good place to stay
The hotel is nice but the WiFi could use some improvements. I look forward to returning in the future
Overall good stay but a few cons were no hot water initially (but fixed within a few hours) and very low water pressure in the shower. Also no lobby, you check-in at the table outside your room. Pricey for what you get.
Costa Rica expensive and overated
If everybody ask for a high price..."stupid americans" will pay....
Perfect place to rest
Really beautiful hotel. Delicious/ healthy food and location, great comfort and value!!! Nice bedding and pillows, and HOT WATER (a rarity in Costa Rica).
Best place I've been the entire trip.
AC! Large room, moderndecor, , amazing staff, breakfast and owner. :)
Excellent personal staff, very kind and sweet.
