Great location, clean and safe
Clean hotel in a great area. Away from hordes of tourists crammed on narrow streets, yet close enough to main attractions, close to metro and on a main steet (easy uber pickup ).The hotel is in an area where they are building a new metro line so be aware - if you sleep with windows open the noise goes all night. However their windows are sound proof and their AC is silent. Quite clean. The shower was too small to be honest (yes you can stand but as a woman shaving legs and all, there's no room). Very odd shower with an extra long curtain so I always flooded the bathroom. But it had a bidet so extra points for that. Service was good but I didn't see or hear about some amenities they mention in the ad like coffee and tea station. Wish I had a kettle in the room at least. You get minimal toiletries
Quiet and peaceful in the city! After being in hospital for a few days this was an oasis of calm. Comfortable bed and linen and very clean. My only issue was the flight of stairs from the street entrance to the hotel reception, it was a tough climb with a suitcase.
No refrigerator and old style decoration but my friend with similar room price have much better decoration and have refrigerator.
Excelente opción para hospedarse en el centro y al llegar del aeropuerto e irse en tren. El personal de lo más agradable y atento... si bien se esta construyendo vale totalmente la pena.
Friendly staff, clean and comfortable room! Would definitely recommend!
Super small and outdated. It was clean!
The staff were great, welcoming and friendly, and the location was good too - 2 mins from São Bento station as well as nearby other popular locations such as the cathedral, shops and restaurants. Facilities were very basic and in definite need of modernisation. The shower head was too low for me (I’m only 5’7, so very low) and wasn’t adjustable. Initially I thought the room was very clean so was happy, but later found a hair in the sheets as well as on the bathroom wall, so glad I was only there 1 night. It was quite noisy too, you could hear the pipes from other rooms running the tap/having a shower. Overall it was an ok stay, but I would have expected more for the price I paid.
Hotel did not have a internet Poor quality No elevator
Friendly staff, nice rooms, great location. Enjoyed our stay!
Hotel WiFi was not working during my stay, which prevented me to do any work on my laptop. Staff declined to give me partial refund for the inconveniences.
Wonderful staff, convenient location, clean room and the rest of the property. The lady at the reception was very nice and helped us with our requests.
Great location, people, breakfast
Easy access to eating, shopping and transportation.
Central location close to the train.
The hotel’s location is great, next to the San Bento Train Station and 2 subway stations. Further, the City Hall and the Cathedral are with several minutes walking distance.
For me the worst characteristics of this hote.l was the accesss from.the road to the first floor reception.I have restricted mobility and some loss of balance. The lackof a hand rail meant that I had to use the very slow and cumbersome chairlift which required the continuous presence of staff.. I would be best if some rooms had a low sided bath or shower as I needed the assistance of my wife to get in and out..Also the bath needed a hand support as the floor was slippy. Location was good for me being close to Sao Bento and the start point of the tour buses Frank Brown
Great hotel located in the cebter of the city. Walking distance to restaurants and shopping. Most tours start 2 blocks from the propertt which is very convenient
No elevator to front desk, and have an enormous stair. No mini bar inside the room. None of those itens were described before.
Hotel bien localizado., limpio, cómodo. El personal muy amable y servicial. Gracias
The room was very nice and clean they changed the sheets everyday. The hotel was right downtown. The only problem was the shower head was broken but otherwise everything was perfect
old,. need renovation
Very convenient, great value
Central location. Good attending staff. Clean.would stay here again.
The hotel is fine. The obsession with glass walls to toilet and shower is strange. And when the glass door to the bathroom is broken and would not close - you feel like you sleep in the middle of the bathroom. Perhaps it us OK for Europe, but a bit weird for people used to american / international standards
all staff , especially Front line so attentive their wealth of experience is cool , and what one wasn't sure of was mentioned to others - great team work .
Great location, clean property.
Conveniently located hotel in the middle of transportation, restaurants, tourist spots. Be noted that there is a long stairway upward to the hotel lobby; however, they have a stair elevator for the individuals in use of wheelchair. It is not for luggage use, so be prepared to carry your luggage upward the stairway. There is an elevator once you got to the lobby right by the entrance, it is likely to fit 3-4 people. The Room I stayed was relatively big with a spa bathtub which i was able to enjoy for the night after a long day of city exploring. The hotel has a policy of retaining the hotel key as you leave the premise. If your booking doesn't include breakfast already, you may purchase to enjoy the continental breakfast provided by the hotel for 9EUR per day. There is a souvenir store located right by the hotel so you purchase some basic necessities from it if needed. grocery store isn't so far away either. One of the most beautiful McDonald is nearby steps away so you can always have a quick meal. If needing late check out, you may check with the hotel to determine if the option is available and pay for the extension. Luggage storage is also an option if you would like to explore the city more after checking out the hotel yet not leaving the city yet.
Couldn't have been at a better location in Porto. Walking distance to everywhere we wanted to go. Basic room but bery clean.
Nice little hotel.
Small, but adequate. Convenient. Nice decor and bed linens. Exactly what I needed, nothing I didn't.
The hôtel is downtown so it's very close to everything
Close to Aliados metro station. Walk up a flight of stairs to reception on level 1, then there is a lift. Staft at reception were very personable. The room was fine but no cafetiere, which was a pity. The breakfast option I paid for in advance was a waste of money - dreadful coffee, hard butter, croissants that looked like they'd been run-over, and sad bread. Better to go over the street to Guaranyi cafe, or a little further to the Fabrica Nata.
The location was good, close to points of interests. The hotel was ok, decent continental breakfast, but the problem was when it started raining, the washroom smelled awful, like a dead rat. The staff were ok as well except for one (I was not able to get her name, but she was the afternoon shift), she was very defensive in everything we try to tell her.
The room was very small but the hotel in a great location. We had just spent 2 nights at the Peninsular which was also in a great location, less expensive, beautiful hotel, large room, breakfast included. I did not feel that the Univesal was good value for money.
Very nice property and excellent value. The room was very clean and had a jacuzzi tub. The bed was comfortable also with Latex pillows. There was a small refrigerator. The location is very convenient, next to a McDonald and at about 10 minutes walk from groceries and major shopping street. There is an elevator, but stairs between the street and elevator. To be mentioned for those with reduced mobility. Lastly, the internet connexion was very good. Highly satisfied with my stay, will consider to return.
Good location and nice accommodations
Nice hotel, good location and kind staff. There was a lopt of noise from 8:00 AM every day, but that was due to a refurbishing services on the building next to the hotel.
Location is good. Front desk service is good. The rest from A to Z is horrible! Hotel must me renovated completely
There is 26 steps up from the sidewalk to the reception. The stairway was narrow. No elevator till you get to the reception. Not recommended for elder people with heavy luggage. The staff at the reception was great. You have to leave the key with the reception every time you leave the hotel. The location is great and one can walk to all the interesting areas around. Plenty of outdoor and indoor restaurants.
This hotel is a great value and the location is superb. While checking in Liliana spent 30 minutes with me helping to map out my days in Porto. She was patient and loved sharing information on her city with me. The room was sufficient, clean and comfortable. My room faced toward the back of the building so I didn't have any noise issues, although it was a bit dark. Breakfast was 7 euros and delicious. Great value for the money. You're close to all sights and things to do in Porto. I had an amazing stay.
Location is great, but very noisy... I can't sleep
My only complaint is too noisy I can't sleep. The location is excellent, right in the middle of the old town. but the church belt goes off vevery 30 minutes and dove me nuts.
Ok hotel good value
Hotel was ok. Long stair climb to lobby, no privacy between toilet and bedroom seemed weird
Couldn't have been in a better location. Only complaint was the weather and can't blame the hotel for that. At least I came back to a warm room
Good location. It’s an old hotel . The staff is so nice. The problem was that we need to use stairs to go to check in.
Great location, close to trains and buses and easy to walk to many key points of interest. Only disappointed was the breakfast offerings.
Excellent ubication
Nice experience!!! The only thing are the stairs to get to the hotel.
Short stay in Porto
I was not sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. The 27 or so steps up to reception would be a problem if you had heavy bags but that did not apply to me.
This is a dingy place with tiny rooms. Some things have been superficially and cheaply renovated, others are plain ugly or not working. I had two rooms in this hotel and air conditioning didn't work properly in either of them. It wasn't possible to set a target temperature. The thing would just continue to cool until it was freezing cold. I did my best to explain this to the staff but they simply refused to admit something was wrong or to let me demonstrate them the problem. The walls in this hotel seem to be as thin as cardboard. You can easily follow your neighbors' conversations. Forget about sleeping without earplugs. And forget about opening the windows, because that street is loud as hell. It was clean though.
central location walkup
No elevator to lobby on 2nd floor. Tiny old dingy smelly hotel. Get less than what you pay for even if it was inexpensive
Shame the walls are thin!!
Great Location and in general good value for money! Only negative is the walls are very thin and can hear clearly your neighbors talking, watching tv etc. Unfortunately on this occasion my neighbors loved TV and talking late whilst I only use my room to sleep so was not ideal.
1 minute from Metro, linking to all of the City.
1 minute from Metro, linking to all of the City. Restaurants and bars all within a couple of minutes walk.
The room is quite big when compared with such price. It is very quiet in the room even the hotel is located at the Main Street of Porto. Is is convenient to go to all sight attractions.
Good value and good location
Clean, comfy and good location. However, the room didn’t get warm enough.
Just for one or two nights
Ok for short stay frendly staff
pretty good
Location couldnt have been better. Woman at the desk was very nice. Our window faced a stairwell but who cares, it was 30 euros.
Good location but mediocre in other ways.
Lots of stairs to climb so not suitable for some. Rooms near the stairs are subject to high noise levels so sleep may be affected.
Good location but disappointing
Great location but a lot of steep marble stairs that they seem to mop between 8-9am each morning to get you luggage up. We did book a double room with the option of single beds with a spa but when we didn't receive it were told they only have them in the double bed rooms. Staff weren't in the slightest bit apologetic and blamed hotels.com for mis representing what they could offer advising you should always telephone the hotel to make sure your getting what hotels.com are advertising.
One night stay
This was a one night stop after arriving in Porto and beginning the camino the next day. For that the hotel was fine.
great location, old but very clean room
cant beat the location. the hotel and the room looks a bit tired but definitely clean. The staff was friendly enough and I would recommend this hotel if you dont mind staying in a place a bit old. it was spotless clean though.
location, location
Excellent location, small, tiny bland room but wow what a location
Location in Porto is terrific; convenient for exploring the city on foot and close to a major train station. Staff are friendly and accommodating.
Good hotel in a nice location
Had a nice short break in Porto. Very interesting place to visit. Lots to do and see. We also did day trips from Porto to Braga and Guimaraes, by train. Sao Bento rail station is only a few minutes walk from the hotel.
Hotel Universal- a great location.
Hotel Universal was in a very good location for getting transit by bus and also connecting with the city tour buses. The train station is some distance from the city center and one must negotiate how to ticket for the connecting metro into the city center. Though there is no ticket booth for the metro, there was a metro official handing travelers a subway cad and helping load the correct amount for the city center destination. If one wishes to travel by metro, do not lose this card because you will not be able to get another one and therefore, never ride the metro again! The 28 steps straight up to the lobby from the street is a very difficult problem for elderly persons. The only access for handicapped is an automated chair that carries one up/down the 28 stairs. An elevator is available from the lobby to the rooms. The appliances were clean and the room was quite nice. However the floors had not been swept as they should have. Walking barefoot one had to clean the feet when getting into bed. Reception was ordinary and friendly, but unwilling to recommend any particular places to eat. The Yellow tour bus was nearly worthless. Most of the sites one could not see/find when highlighted on the headset and my headset (and the one next to me as well) quit working after about 1/4 of the way into the tour. It was nice scenery, but was of little value.
This hotel is not recommendable. The only positive remark would be its central location.
A bit old but everything else is excellent
The location is great, especially for the price. The building is older but charming. I had a (cheaper) basic room that doesn't look as nice as those in the pictures, but it is spacious by European standards. Great service and absolutely 5 stars to Lilieanna at the reception. I had a late check in, at almost mid-night, and I told her that I just walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain and I would very much appreciate if I could have a room with a bathtub. She checked and make sure of that. She is very knowledgeable, friendly and funny. Absolute joy to be greeted by her every night when I return. I would stay here again on my next trip!
Its good hotel located perfectly.
The hotel was good and located near to almost all attractions and Metro station. Its accessible and easy to walk around. But the only issue that you need to climb the hotel by stair to the Lobby. Luckily, access to room with very old Left.
good location and helpful stuffs
Just a basic room but hotel location is perfect and helpful stuffs
clean and convient
good
Without a doubt, the worst place I have ever stayed as far as smell. Housekeeping was friendly. The smell was overbearing. Bedding was out of date. Half of staff was angry, other half was helpful. Great view of the square, centrally located, to Everything. Would I stay again, NO! & Overpriced!
Modern rooms with a nice layout for the size. Very central and close to the train station. Reception is up about two floors of our only accessible by stairs. From there an elevator is available to get to the rooms.
Central location
Very friendly greeting. Informative receptionist.
Happy with the Hotel Universal
Great hotel / great location made it a winning stay in Porto.
Excellent location
Excellen location. Grest cost-benefit. Near train terminal
Room was decent with no big amenities, tv had only one channel working. location was excelent, in the heart of the city and super close to the spot with all the bars and nightlife.
Nice, with perfect location, in old building
Nice, with perfect location, in a rather old building. Rooms are quiet, which is not so common in central located hotels.
Close to the "old town"
Great location. No air conditioning in the rooms. Had to sleep with windows open and the noise from the street traffic made tough to sleep. Great staff though!
No escalator, it's difficult to climb up the steps
Located in main street and metro near-by, very convenience.
good.... But
good location , good price but if your are sensitive to noise it's not for you, on one busiest streets in city !
Solid hotel with great location
We stayed one night here. You can't beat the location and the view from our window was phenomenal! Rooms are a little small and a bit run down but very clean and had everything we needed. Breakfast was continental. Overall very good location and great if you are out sightseeing all day.
Nice weekend in Porto and Guimaraes. We went two friends to enjoy Porto's attractions; but definitely we were surprised by Guimaraes; very nice village with a lot of history and attractions.
Lovely hotel and staff. Perfect location!
Cheap and good
Excellent location in downtown porto. Desk staffed 24 hours, personal is friendly and speaks english reasonably well. Rooms are not too big but clean, walls are a bit thin, breakfast is pretty minimal, wifi works well. For the price this is an excellent hotel.
Great location, easy to find from the metro stop and very central to all the sights of Porto. Also right next to the Hop on Hop off bus service and the world's fanciest McDonald's :) which was fun. 2 mins away from the main train station in town and 5 mins away from the bus station for transfers to Lisbon. Would stay here again.
Excellent location, basic (but working) features
Perfect location. Easy to arrive, good head base to walk Porto. Air conditioner, hot water all right. The personnel at counter is very knowledgeable ( and polyglot). Room is slightly small, separated (and hard) beds (as in all Portugal up to now). Window to internal court. Take a breakfast in Cafe Embaixador (round the corner) Enjoy Porto!
Great choice
Very clean (4* Hotel), comfy beds, great location. I was surprised to see you have a a free access computer in the lobby. Very handy when you don't have a smartphone or just want to print something. I recommend this place and I would repeat.
Tourist trap
Old place, even though the room and bathroom was clean, the bed was terrible and I've seen walk in closets that are bigger. Spend your money elsewhere.
Great location
Great location for the price. Room was in a good condition. Pillows could do with being changed. There was also a plug socket which had come away from the wall and did not look safe to use. Staff were very friendly. Would probably stay here again if coming back to Porto.
Acceptable hotel in perfect location
Hotel was okay, but perfect location for the city centre.
The best location in Porto
The best location in Porto
Better than expected
Just what we were looking for..a reasonable priced central located hotel which included breakfast. All staff were friendly but the "star" was the receptionist "Lilieanna" who went out of her way to be helpful and very knowledgable about the area. We (3) slept well, in a room overlooking the main thoroughfare - double glazing prevented any noise from disturbing us. Breakfast was "Continental" i.e fruit juice, joghurt, rolls, meat and cheese etc., plus coffee or tea. Overall - a good experience.
Universal porto
Great price on very clean rooms in an excellent location. Rooms are small but only used the room to sleep. Front desk staff was knowledgable about the city and also very helpful.
Very good location, friendly service
Very convenient location near the major sights, especially the Cathedral. Very versatile breakfast and tidy room for three. The door to the bathroom did not close properly.
location and property good. entrance stairs to lobby a problem re luggage
