In need of an upgrade

Great views, comfortable bed, bathroom and shower in desperate need of renovation, smell from the sink drain, breakfast very limit, although good coffee. Pool was nice but a little on the cold side! Lift to the rooms a little sketchy and small! Overall, 4* hotel with a 2* bathroom and breakfast.

The balcony had an amazing view of Mt. Etna and the city. We enjoyed the view a lot, but there were downsides. The beds were super uncomfortable compared to other locations we have been staying. The shower is also very tiny and hard to move around in. The staff was very helpful and friendly the entire time we just prefer not to leave our key everytime we were going out of the hotel. Our air conditioning was leaking in the entrance and the housekeeping ladies made sure to get it fixed for us.

Incredible pool area - it’s a big reason why we booked. The view is unmatched. Overall the hotel is well-maintained with what appeared to be mostly original furniture annd fixtures including the original turquoise tile bathroom from the 60s/70s (I would guess). The location is perfect: a short walk to the main street with most of the historical sites, restaurants and shopping, and yet perfectly quiet. The view at breakfast is also incredible. Breakfast itself was adequate and included scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, fruit juice, etc. Overall it was charming and unique.

The rooms are a little dated but they have everything you need; are very clean and the staff are friendly and very helpful. The hotel is minutes from the centre - down a steep hill but it is very short and there are steps. The pool is lovely and the view is stunning.

We had a wonderful stay, but the room was EXTREMELY outdated. Very old style furniture and a shower that felt centuries old and that basically dripped water instead of having a good flow. The swimming pool is wonderfully peaceful but again, could do with some ambient music or more frequent service poolside. Hotel staff were great, always helpful and friendly. Breakfast was fantastic although there's no toaster for bread. We had a balcony with sea view with our room and it was wonderful - but it isn't very private as it connects to all other balconies on the same side with out a few plants dividing. Luckily it was always quiet and we were pretty much always the only ones out there. The room had air con which is great and a fully stocked fridge. Car parking was easy but definitely quite pricey considering its kept on site.

Views, pool, location +++

As others have said, the views are sensational, probably the best in Taormina, pool area is beautiful too. Location is great and the stairs are good for keeping fit but not a great location if you have mobility problems. We are used to older dated traditional Italian hotels and prefer them to more modern properties but this one is definitely going to need some updating asap..namely bathrooms and plumbing! Often unpleasant odours from the drains and water problems were noticed. It’s a place ripe for some renovations but there is definitely charm as is. Most of the staff are friendly but others need to smile more. Breakfast is great and the location of the breakfast tables are again probably the best in Taormina.

Although the hotel offers breathtaking views, I spent 455$ per night for this hotel and the AC barely worked and we didn’t have hot water. We had to shower in cold water. We were there 3 nights. Out of the 3 nights, we had lukewarm water at best 1 night and the other 2 nights cold water. Rooms were a run down. Over all I would not say this hotel is a 4 star hotel and if I base myself only on the hot water and AC situation I would give it 1 star

Dated decor but view worth it & has Sicilian Charm

major plus of this hotel was the stunning view from the rooms, pool and terrace restaurant. Initial thoughts however was the hotel was dated and staff a little grumpy BUT loved that this hotel was above all the hustle and bustle and quickly got used to the flights of steps up and down. Staffed after first encounter were lovely. The beds are uncomfortable and as mentioned everything a little dated - but that makes it eco-friendly :) Other negative is that although there is a bar its not a great location and no one congregated there

Great location, view was great from the room facing the sea, quiet, and having a pool was a great amenity. Lobby staff were helpful and the house keeping staff did an amazing job. The rest of the staff made you feel like you are troubling them and were unfriendly. The hotel needs to update their rooms. The rooms are tired and the mattresses are hard. Breakfast is ok. Definitely not worth the prices and in my opinion not an 4 star hotel. I would not stay here again.

We had booked quite last minute, so were lucky to find any spaces within Taormina - having visited the town before, we know that accommodation can be eye wateringly expensive, so if you are on a budget then you have to lower your expectations! The hotel is very old fashioned, and desperately in need of a makeover, however the staff are lovely and keep it all clean. The bedroom has comfortable beds and a huge terrace with the most incredible view over the harbour, and the swimming pool at the top of the hotel is wonderful. We didn’t bother with the breakfast after the first day, preferring to walk into the town, which is only five minutes away. In my view the slight shoddiness is all part of the Sicilian experience, if you want hyper modern Holiday Inns then go to Las Vegas, Taormina is not for you!

Great Views and Service

Hotel is a little old fashioned but rather charming, and takes full advantage of its hillside location with fantastic views from public areas and most rooms. Breakfast on the 1st floor terrace was especially pleasurable in this respect, although the best panoramic views are from the roof of the hotel - a shame they don't use this as a bar or restaurant. We booked a 'Garden Room' so didn't expect a view, but it was at the side of the hotel and had a great view across the hills towards Etna. The hotel is well located on the whole, only a 5 minute walk (down a steep street) from the western end of the main street in Taormina (Corso Umberto), although this does mean that most of the places of interest and restaurants are further east and therefore a 10-15 minute walk away along the pedestrianised street. Note, if you are navigating to the hotel via the map on the App, the location shown is not quite right, so just keep walking a bit further along the street and you'll find it fine. The room and hotel in general were very clean and the quality of service from staff was very good, particularly at reception. The swimming pool is attractive and a good size, surrounded by loungers, many with great views. We also took advantage of the facilities at the sister hotel on the beach, where we were able to use the sun loungers and umbrellas and enjoy great swimming in the beautiful, warm sea. There is a charge for the taxi to get down there, which takes about 15 minutes.

Great location and service, fab views

Loved this hotel for its location, the service and most importantly the fab views of Etna and the coast. You can get the views from the bar/breakfast terrace and also roof/pool terraces but I really recommend paying extra for room terrace. Really one of best views I've ever enjoyed, we spent many a happy hour on our terrace. Lovely pool, roof terrace and steep terraced gardens. Hotel has parking but don't bring a large car, €10 a day, reserve in advance. You will need an up to date satnav to find hotel. Some lovely trattorias down the bottom of the hill opposite, also a supermarket. I would love to stay again. Enjoy!

Hotel has a very friendly and breakfast is very nice on the first floor terrace. Parking on the premises is available for 10 Euros a day which is convenient. Walk down steps or steep street to Taormania, but to return you really need to take a taxi unless you are in very good shape. Perfect Setting

It's true that the rooms are functional and that the plastic chairs on the terrace are kind of Homebase, but The Mediterranee has the very special advantage of a brilliant vista, with terrific views of Etna which looks fabulous at dawn and dusk. The hotel is anout 4 minutes from the heart of the town - which is also a positive, as it provides peace amidst the tourist wave that flows back and forth the Main Street day and night. Finally there is the pool which is great. Set high up, it is surrounded on three sides by rising terraces with beautiful plants - an oasis amid an oasis. If we ever go to Taormina again, here is where we will stay

Better than expected

A very pleasant hotel, situated above the main street of Corso Umberto. The climb up a steep hill and several steps can be a challenge for the less fit but nothing too strenuous. Our room was clean, if a little dated, and had amazing views over the town, bay and Mt Etna. Breakfasts of cold meats, cheese, breads, fruit, cereals and yoghurt were plentiful. (tea and coffee not the best though!) Staff friendly and helpful. We very much enjoyed our late afternoons around the ample size swimming pool on loungers with bar service - we recommend the Aperol Spritz!! The hotel was a very pleasant surprise, and better than expected from its star rating. It felt like a bit of a 1960's time warp, which we found quite charming.

Perfect hotel for our needs. Wonderful views overlooking Taormina, 10 mins walk down into town ... A bit longer to return as up hill! Good to walk off the wonderful Italian food and gelato! Staff were all extremely helpful, we had several requests... Hairdryer, extra pillows etc and within minutes they were delivered. Taxis booked and our last taxi to the airport was late and the front of house manager was just about to drive us there himself when the taxi showed up. Now that's service! Pool was fine and you have the extra option of getting shuttle bus to their sister hotel at the beach with all their amenities. Breakfast adequate usual continental fare but served on the terrace Al fresco with the views of Etna. Not luxurious but clean and good location. Good value for money!

disappointing compared to their website pics

The main reason to stay at the Mediterranee is the view. If you can get a guarantee of being on the 4th floor or higher, then the hotel is worth considering if you are ok with 2 star rooms and 3 star facilities. Otherwise there are many better options for the price. The view is fantastic from the higher floors and the top floor pool area. Also, the pool area is really quite nice (4 star). The rooms are very small and with old furniture and flooring, with tiny bathrooms (2 star rooms). NO WiFi available in the rooms, and only offered on the first floor in their restaurant. This is completely unacceptable in this modern age of staying in touch. No connectivity is tolerated in 1 star accommodations but not acclaimed 4 star. There were only two power outlets in the room (I looked behind every piece of furniture. One for the TV and the other for the minibar. I have to move furniture and unplug one or both of them to be able to plug in cell phones and computers. Very inconvenient. Breakfast was a sparse selection for cold options. All three days of my stay it was under-staffed by only two gentlemen, who although worked hard and were nice, were not able to provide timely service. On all three mornings it took 5-10 minutes to get a coffee.

Very old and jaded hotel!

The hotel is very jaded and could do with a complete revamp. The mirrors in reception above the reception desk all the silver is peeling off and so it looks tatty and scratched, the area is very small. The staff generally were helpful, the hotel manager was not at all helpful. We had a car and whenever we used it and parked in the hotel car park, the next time we wanted to use the car we would find it behind five cars in a higher part of the car park. When we asked for the car as we were going out the manager would say "Now" in a very curt way, we had to leave the keys with the reception staff. Breakfast was adequate but no hot food, we didn't eat in the restaurant for lunch or dinner. We were very disappointed there was no pool side bar for drinks and food. The pool was ok, set in gardens but they were very unkempt and the tiles around the pool were very old and tatty and could do with a face lift. Our room was very basic. The bed was very hard and uncomfortable. The bathroom was small, the basin was very low, and there was only a trickle of water from the tap. The shower took ages for the water to heat up. We had asked for a room with a front sea view and balcony which we got however, our balcony was the size of a football pitch and only divided from the room next door by a couple of pot plants so people wandered across to look at view, we asked to move but this never happened We had one day of torrential rain and water leaked into our room all over the floor.

Room comfortable and even had a bath (unusual in Sicily) - booked last minute & got a great deal! Parking is onsite but when checking out they charged us €10 per night and one of the staff was a bit surly but other than that we enjoyed our stay

Reasonably priced hotel with magnificent views

This hireling is no frills but the pool is great and it is competitively priced. It's just up the hill from the old town but is easily walkable (10mins). the rooms are clean and spacious.

It was above any expectations. it was wonderful. It is our opinion with my wife, and with my brother & his wife. Staff is friendly, really friendly. Rooms are clean & roomy. Scenary is breath taking. Breakfast is plenty & tasty. Very close to the Main street & attractions (5-15min). What else I can say. Just go & enjoy.

Taormina from the Midertainee hotel

Hotel is situated on a hill above the main street of town. To reach the shopping and restaurants required traversing 114 steep steps down and severely strenuous back up to the hotel. The view from the room terrace was outstanding, the bathroom small but adequate, (do people still use a bidet?), staff helpful but with limited English understanding. Bus transportation station at the far end of town, the train station a long ways away, taxi fee 15 Euros.

Good location in Taormina

We stayed at the hotel for 1 night. The hotel is really dated. It's not so clean also (not only in the room but also in corridors). TV is small and old. But we loved the location- 5-10 min walk from the main street. Breakfast was wonderfull and they had it on the terrace overlooking the beautiful view of Taormina bay!! Loved it. I think that if they renovate it a little it would be perfect !

Rooms typically small.

Hotel is perched on a cliff which provides a dramatic view of the city, surrounds and Mount Etna. The staff were exceptionally friendly and efficient. The room was a little small and outdated, but wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

Lovely hotel, great for a getaway

I stayed at is hotel with a group of friends, we each had a room with balcony and sea view. The hotel put us all next to each other, so we shared the same huge balcony, which was fantastic. Note that the balconies are private, but we moved a few things and could get around! It's in a great location, the breakfast was excellent, there was hotel parking, and the swimming pool is super. We all loved this hotel.

Great location and beautiful view. This is a 1960's hotel that has a lot of nostalgia while providing excellent service. Has parking area that is a major benefit. Excellent walking access to central area.

Nice hotel run by local family.

Run by a nice local family this excellent hotel was perfect for our stay. The only little trouble we had was that the initial day or so the swimming pool was cloudy because it had just been treated i.e. it was not sparkling clear. Otherwise a perfect stay.

Excellent location,amazing views.

Location of hotel is a major plus and the panoramic views of the coast and Etna are awesome. The hotel is a little dated however it manages to retain it's charm. The rooms are comfortable without being luxurious. The major complaint would be the lack of soundproofing and as a consequence you can hear everything from nearby rooms. Breakfast was adequate and all staff, especially front desk were friendly and helpful. the shuttle service to the beach was good and the beach itself was clean with helpful staff, hint- take towels from hotel to save hiring at beach.

Great Views thats All

Hotel is rated a 4 Star, in my opinion at best only a 2 Star. This hotel needs a good refurbish. Bathroom small, I washed my feet in the bidet as I sat on the toilet. Wardrobe doors would not close or open due to the bed was to close and could not be moved away. The only good thing I could say about this hotel is, the view was great and the staff were very helpful.

Good value hotel in Taormina

I have tried several hotels in Taormina. This hotel is not as expensive as some, but represents good value. Parking was possible in the grounds. There is a swimming pool in the grounds behind the hotel. Staff were helpful (e.g. booking a large taxi to take our party to the station) and efficient.

The hotel itself was ok but for us the position was difficult because of the climb to and from the town. However the views from the room were spectacular. The room was kept very clean the whole of the stay the main problem was the shower was very small.

Great Views, Handy Location

Hotel had amazing views of Mt. Etna and sea, and is within walking distance to centre of town. We were warmly welcomed by Rosario who gave us a rundown of the hotel facilities and surrounding area. The other staff weren't so cheerful - they need to smile a little. Though the room was clean and spacious, the furniture could be upgraded. Huge balconies but only a little plastic outdoor table and 2 chairs. A couple of sun beds would have been great. Nice & clean rooftop pool area overlooking the sea and Mt. Etna. Internet only available on 1st floor dining area. Buffet breakfast was ok, though dining room staff a little stiff.

1960s hotel

good pool, pool area looking out across the bay and mount Etna.hotel tired, breakfast basic.quite like the original furniture around the hotel, but let down by cheap flat pack furniture in bedroom.Don`t think hotel would suit the old or infirm, quite hilly and loads of steps leading up to hotel from resort centre.Sicily is very much the poor relation to Italy, parts of Taormina are lacking but all in all its a good place to stay for a few days.

Good retro hotel

I think the hotel was built in the 50s/60s and has retained some of that periods charms. Wouldn't call it luxurious but would stay there again. There are no signs for the pool nor did staff give us info on it - eventually remembered it was supposed to exist and asked as to it's whereabouts and it was good when we got there. Breakfast buffet wasn't a highlight. Large balcony, great views. AirCon good, shower needed a new head but worked.

Desperately in need of basic maintenance

The good: views out of breakfast terrace. Pool was secluded. The rest: although staff were reasonably pleasant, owners had clearly not chosen to invest any profit back into maintaining the hotel. Electric sockets dangling out from walls (giving us a shock), dusty bedcovers and carpets, non-functioning aircon from the 1970's.Beds soft, and sagging. Blankets were dusty, wondered when they'd last had a wash. Even allowing for the inflated prices in Taormina, this was extremely poor value.

Elegant hotel with beautiful views.

Lovely hotel - perfectly placed for exploring Taormina, and the surrounding area. We loved the charming and helpful staff, the stunning views of Mt Etna and the sea, and the great location. The pool and cliff gardens were safe and fun for the kids to play in, and the hotel was perfectly placed for a 2 minute walk into town. The hotel was quiet and clean with a faded elegance that added to its character.

Tired but good location.

Overall a good hotel although the four stars is definitely for the size of the room, amenities offered and not for the quality of the fixtures which are very old, clean but tired. Bathroom was pretty average, breakfast was good with a selection of cold meats, cheeses, breads, cereals etc. Car parking was easy with the hotel valeting the parking due to the very restricted space for parking, might be more of an issue in the peak season.

Loved the character of this hotel

Hotel Mediterranee may not be for the traveller that wants slick, modern facililities but my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the 60's and 70's feel of this hotel. It's in a terrific location at the top of town and altough that meant a few stairs walking back up from the Corso, the views from the deck and the pool were well worth it. It might feel a bit dated but the staff was helpful and we enjoyed our 3 day stay. Taormina is a beautiful town and we would stay at this hotel again.

Location good (with Parking) hotel needs an update

The location is 5 - 10 mins walk down some steps and a road to the main shopping street with bars etc., in Taormina. On the plus side the hotel has parking which would otherwise be very difficult. The hotel has fantastic views particularly from the excellent pool. However the rooms and bathrooms are very tired - the shower in our room over the bath was very basic, no hairdrier, no minibar, the shaver socket was not an international socket and overall just a little old fashioned and tired. The free buffet breakfast was a bit disappointing. They ran out of croissants one morning, and the fruit consisted of a few bits of watermelon - in an area where there is an abundance of peaches this was a bit basic.

A Great Place to Stay

Hotel Mediterranee Hotel Mediterranee is a great place to stay. The views are absolutely stunning each morning, and the staff are the friendliest that I have experienced in many years of travelling. It would benefit from updating, but the pool area is excellent - quite large, deep, and very attractive. It sits just above the charming main town of Taormina, with many brilliant restaurants and cocktail bars, but with a 5 minute walk down and up to keep the heart racing. This is certainly not 4 or 5 star luxuryl, but a wonderful place to stay, and you will not be disappointed by Hotel Mediteranee, by amazing views and those lovely hotel staff.

Only go if the view is all that matters!

This hotel is in a great location and as far as the rooms facing the sea, the view is to die for. Having said that, everything else was disappointing. the A/C does not begin to cool the room. the breakfast is a joke with a few pieces of low-grade cold cuts and some other low quality items. Pool towels looked like they we the originals when the hotel was opened in the 60's. Will never stay again.

Great for couples & families with teenage children

Good hotel on the whole. Great location but not suitable for elderly people because there are lots of steps up and down into town. Swimming pool was lovely, very clean and fantastic views although not really suitable for very young children. Hotel rooms and balconies were spacious with effective air conditioning, however lounge areas of the hotel did not have air conditioning and décor was a bit dated. The beach at the sister hotel was not on the doorstep but there was a shuttle bus service. It was a pebble beach.

Good location not very friendly reception

Room was nice and breakfast was good, lovely pool but the room was a bit small and not very luxurious for the 4 star rating Also the staff were very rude to my partner who didn't wear his top down to reception one day. He was shouted and sarcastically reminded he wasn't at the beach...if on arrival we had been given a polite reminder of the rules we would have adhered to them. A friend of mine staying at the hotel was also rudely told of by a waiter at breakfast for not being dressed appropriately with shouting and a finger in her face

Expect 3 star and you may be happy

Room comfort poor as there was spartan. 2 rigid chairs, not comfortable was only seating, an old tv, no tea and coffee facilities, no hairdryer, no hotel guide. Pool shut at 7pm. Room very clean but very basic. Bathroom dated, shower good. Bar hours not obvious - seemed to be working only if someone was there. No drink facilities or toilets near pool. Pool very pretty and well kept with good views but frustrating to have to go from 7th to 1st floor to get drinks. Fixtures clearly worse for wear but clearly clean and functional throughout. No room service that we were made aware of. Convenient location for town but felt more like a three star than a four star - hence graded as disappointing as from hotel rating we expected more. If we had expected a three star it would have almost been good.
