THE HOLY LAND TOUR VACATION

The service was excellent, Food was kook like home made with fresh products from the town, I was offered if I need rent a car or want to sail on the boat, they have service they can provide. Rooms where clean poll was clean. Great Experience at this village, I will go back again with my family.

Room towels are not allowed at the pool & they want 3 euro “rental” for pool towels. Property marked “pet friendly” yet owned raised his voice about our small well behaved dog. Single use hotel shampoo bottle was half empty (gross!). They would allow outside drinks at pool area, yet no one was at bar to sell beer. We felt nickel & dimed the entire time at the facility.

Desk staff friendly and informative. On-site travel office run by proprietor was helpful (and entertaining). No coffee available in room or in commons areas before 8AM. Breakfast adequate. Room and public areas clean and spacious. Restaurant staff welcoming, made us feel like they were happy to have us there. Located in Akrotiri Village at south end of Santorini, away from the action in Fira and Oia (accessible by bus if you want to go up there).

10/10 would recommend

As young travellers especially staying in hotels I often feel overlooked and disregarded. This most certainly was not the case at hotel Mathios! From the moment my best friend and I entered the doors we were greeted with open arms and treated like family! Our stay in Santorini was very short and the manager knowing this, went through a variety of options for things to do and then fully organised our days- ensuring we got the whole Santorini experience. I highly recommend eating dinner at the restaurant the food we had was traditional and delicious. Hotel Mathios is a home away from home and exceeded every expectation I had. I will be returning not only to Santorini but this exact hotel not only because of their location but their staff and facilities.

Best vacation ever - Hotel Mathios Village

I loved this hotel. The hotel is family owned, and they treated me and my family as part of their family. The hotel was centrally located in Santorini, close to the Akrotiri ruins, red, white and black beaches, as well as wine tasting. It was only a short drive to Fira as well. The hotel itself, although not luxurious, had everything that was needed for a comfortable and extremely pleasant stay. The bar by the pool was perfect for a pool side mojito or piña colada, as well as pool side meals. Definitely try their salads, especially the tuna salad! My only regret was we could not stay longer. We will be back however, I guarantee it.

The room was gorgeous and the pool is a relaxing haven. The excursions Konstant planned for me were perfect. I cannot wait to return. The location is beautiful and everyone one on the staff was wonderful. If you want a beautiful hotel, clean and in a great location - this is the place on Santorini.

Wonderful hotel near Caldera beach.

I booked superior double room via Expedia and got a good deal. Hotel reached out to me for transport from Airport and made arrangements on confirmation. When we reached there a surprise was waiting for us, got a free upgrade to a suite with swimming pool view and balcony. Hotel Manager Mr. Konstantinos Papalexis is quite friendly and lively person. We asked for tours and plans and he suggested to rest for the day and arranged some wonderful trips for us as per our leisure. Now coming back to the hotel part, this one has a swimming pool, luxurious lobby, garden full of flowers and pool facing the restaurant and bar. What else you need on a sunny day. Enjoy pool with a fancy cocktail, have some greek food and relax on a sun bed. Our suite was kind of two floor room, living room on the ground floor and bed upstairs. Initially, we were not comfortable with this arrangement but gradually it grew upon us. you got a big sofa in the room so you can relax there while watching tv. We stayed there for four days and never had dinner outside. As we are vegetarians so initially we were a bit skeptical about veg options but after having food there first time on arrival day we never thought of trying other places. We even tried veg platter there and what an amazing experience it was. Breakfast is complimentary and you can enjoy that in the hall or at poolside. If you are into wines then you will love house wine…ahh :)

Hotel staff was exceptionally helpful and friendly! We only stayed one night, and was last minute reservation, due to a change in boat time change from Santorini to Rhodes. But they helped us setup an ATV (international drivers license required before you travel*), and we 4-wheeled all around the south of Santorini to the 3 awesome beaches. The owner of the hotel even hooked us up with a free day bed at black beach. The room was just "ok". No frills and nothing fancy, but did the job. If you are looking for something super cheap and easy in the south of Santorini I'd recommend it. But remember Fira is where you want to stay for all the shopping and views.

Great location but the room I had was very basic and had constant noise all night from local traffic, other residents and early in the morning the cleaners rattling around. Didn’t sleep well at all, staff were polite but manager is only interested in making money ended up spending a lot for a trip to Oia £125 euros which he arranged but was a waste of money, wouldn’t go back to that hotel but maybe Santorini. First time I couldn’t wait to go home also all week very windy. Booked through Expedias recommendation, spoke to staff to book, won’t be doing that again, big mistake!

Very unpleasant 2 nights stay. Very Noisy room. I booked a Standard room, it's say garden view on Expedia website, when I arrived, I got a room facing the Main Street, very noisy and small. Quiet family-run hotel with courtyard pool

The hotel is ideally placed if you are interested in spending time at the archeological excavation of Akrotiri, where cool artistic people lived a life of luxury 3600 years ago while most of us Europeans were living in caves, wearing skins, and throwing rocks at each other (nothing much changed then). Mr Costas the owner greeted us on arrival and was very helpful with advice about local facilities. He also owns a restaurant at the nearest "sandy' beach Perissa (7km approx) and allowed us free use of beach sunbeds . The other staff were also very friendly and helpful. Our room had a balcony shaded by pomegranate trees and flowering shrubs - beautiful! You can walk down to the sea at Akrotiri beach where there are economical small boat trips to red, white, and black, beaches, and for a very modest fee you can take a little boat party (plenty of free wine!) out to see the amazing Thira sunset. Best enjoyed when the wind is below force 4 ;) There are also several good restaurantas on Akrotiri beach, including the Cave of Nikolas, which has the best fish tomato balls in Thira. My wife and I had a very restful and enjoyable stay!

Nice pool, shame about rooms

Our 'standard room' was described as having 'garden view balcony'. This turned out to be a balcony with a flower bed at the end, but overlooking a main road and extremely busy junction with high-revving quad bikes throughout the evening and into the night. It was too noisy to watch TV with the balcony doors open - we had to keep the shutters and door closed so never had daylight in the room. The other concern was the ladder up to the platform with the bed on - it was at about 60 degrees, very difficult to climb up and down and would be considered dangerous according to UK Building Regilstions. Anyone with limited mobility would be unable to climb up to bed. This was not made clear at the point of booking.

Santodreamy!

Myself and my boyfriend (both 30 years old) booked our stay last minute so didn't quite know what to expect. We had reservations that we might be in a slightly sleepy part of the island, which was true, but we were delighted with our choice. It meant we could properly relax and switch off as we weren't in the touristy, expensive hustle and bustle of Fira, Kamari or Oia but we were still easily able to explore these towns at our leisure. The hotel is also opposite one of the best vantage points, overlooking the sea. I would argue you could get as good a view of the sunset as you would in Oia. We stayed in a perfect room, number 32, in Hotel Mathios, with a mezzanine bed and a lovely patio space of our own outside. The rooms were cleaned every day and fresh towels/ toiletries left out. The pool was lovely, and in the area there are enough decent restaurants to keep you happy for a week. We didn't opt in for the breakfast, which looked decent, as we were on a tight budget and it was €10 a day. A special mention to the staff; especially Mr Kostas and his lovely receptionist who were so welcoming and helpful and really made our stay so easy and rather special! They helped us to book an ATV one of the days to explore the island, and a car for two days - all at good prices. They gave us great advice, helping to plan an unforgettable trip.

“Beautiful family Hotel in Santorini”

Beautiful family Hotel in Santorini. Our first family vacation to Greece, and we will return for sure to Hotel Village Mathios in the future. Kostas and his staff were fantastic, our 7 day stay felt like home away from home. Welcoming, helpful, clean, enjoyable, and beautiful hotel. Delicious breakfast every morning, and delicious authentic Greek food during the day with drinks by the pool. The pool was especially nice for our kids. Our kids enjoyed entertaining other guests at breakfast, and during the day by the pool. Thank you Kostas for a great stay, you were always around smiling, and your receptionist, she's wonderful. Thank you for making our stay so memorable. Until next time, when we visit Santorini again. Colette and Rabih

Exactly as needed for a short, hassle free break

The room is perfectly adequate and clean with daily cleaning and refreshment of linen. The TV provided was unexpectedly large but the channels were limited but then if I wanted to watch TV maybe I should stay home. The hotel complex is spacios and airy and kept to high standards. I chose the breakfast option and was more than satisfied with the vaiety that was offered, fresh every day. The hotel is not very central which was perfect for my needs with my places of immediate interest in short walking distance. Local travel facilities are outside the front door but car hire will comfortably extend your reach to the entire island

Nice hotel in a fabulous location

The hotel is well located with a lovely salt water pool and pleasant rooms with very comfortable beds. Konstantinos is very welcoming and helpful. My brother made a late booking for the same hotel and Konstantinos upgraded his room at no extra cost so that he would be near to me. Akritori is a lovely hill top village with good reasonably priced tavernas away from the hustle and bustle of Fira and Oia. You still have the Caldera view across the road from the hotel and sea views from one of the honeymoon suites. The restaurant food at the hotel is also very good with the "Volcano" and "Meatballs" a personal recommendation. The buffet breakfast includes healthy choices, fresh water melon, beautiful bread and homemade cakes. My only criticism was the breakfast coffee which was too weak for my taste. By contrast the coffee served from the poolside bar was very good. I would definetely recommend this hotel and hope to go back.

Mr Kostas made our 4 night stay in Santorini a wonderful experience. We enjoyed his recommendation of renting a economy car for 3 days and a cruise to see the breathtaking caldera from the sea. Mr Kostas has such a passion for his hotelling business and taking great care of his guests. I really like his advice on what to visit and how to arrange the trip with a car. He is always there to answer questions and provide his expert advice. All the staff there are friendly and accomendating. We really enjoyed our time there. Thanks to Mr Kostas. The hotel is lovely and comfortable. I would rather stay in this hotel than staying in Oia or Fira because with a rental car you can go anywhere you want since it is a small island. Relaxing Holiday

If your idea of a visit to Santorini is a quiet relaxing holiday with good local food and the opportunity to meet other like-minded people then Akrotiri is a good base, and Mathios Village Hotel a good choice. Staff friendliness & hotel cleanliness impeccable. Rooms not large but adequate. Restaurant, bar and pool very good. Meal & bar prices higher than in the village (250m away) but not excessively so. Travel advice, car hire, airport transfers, onsite from Mr Kostas. The only real criticism was a noisy room refrigerator - easily remedied by turning it off at night - didn't need cold gin before lunch most days!! Be ready to pay for extras

We stayed 2 days at this hotel recently. We arrived early in the morning in Santorini and went to check in the hotel in the morning. We were told that we could not check in before 1pm, all this in spite of the fact that I had already requested for an early check in via email a few days earlier. I had recieved a reply from the hotel saying everything would be taken care of., which obviously wasnt. To be fair, the hotel did provide us a room 2hours earlier than 1 pm. When we checked in we were told that we could not bring hotel towels to the pool, instead we were told to ask for towels which could be provided for the pool area. When we went to get the towels we were told that there would be a surcharge for every towel. This was quite puzzling as the hotel was charging us money to use their towels at their own pool. On a similar note the hotel does not provide a safe in the rooms however they charge 6 euros per day to store valuables in their lockers. We had breakfast as part of the package which was a bare minimal breakfast. Moreover when we went for the breakfast 30 mins before closing tim,e half of the food had already finished off. The rooms were ok considering we were in a suite with our room having no wifi connection inside the room. There were nocomplimentary slippers and bathrobes, the shower cubicle was so small that i had to literally squeeze in withou having room to move my arms. I wonder what the classic room showers were like!!!

The very best of Greek hospitality and cuisine

We spent 2 weeks in September in this lovely family-run hotel and couldn’t fault anything there! From the minute we stepped into the lovely reception with a home-feel atmosphere to the time we had to sadly say good-by it was an amazing experience for our first time in Santorini. Kostas, the owner and all support staff and the hotel itself made our vacation a truly amazing experience and we can’t wait to return! Kostas is a warm, kind and very hospitable man; he knows the island well and has the best recommendations for any activities you would like to do, including car hire, best places to go and excursions to book. Trust his experience and you will enjoy every minute of your stay! Although we didn’t book half-board in the hotel's restaurant, after trying famous Greek dishes there on our first night, we ended up eating there every day during the first week of our stay and it was a wonderful experience of its own with several extras given here and there that made us feeling like dining in a cosy family atmosphere. Kostas was always dining there himself and usually entertained and served his guests personally, a very friendly and nice touch, we exchanged a lot of good jokes during many dinners. Without any reservations we recommend to book this hotel and to experience it all yourselves. There are several nice beaches within walking distance of the hotel as well as good restaurants too, so the location is very convenient. Thanks Kostas for making our stay special. Alla & Reimar

Will not return

The pictures of this hotel look better than the hotel itself. The rooms are completely outdated and the beds feel like you are sleeping on a marble floor. Location of the hotel was okay although the immediate area does not have a lot going on. This hotel had many rules, like only beverages and food purchased from the hotel in the area. Even when we purchased food from the hotel we were not allowed to have any of it in our room. We had to bring back out own plates at breakfast and lunch. Staff were friendly and the food was good. Cheaper to take a taxi from the airport then having the hotel arrange it for you. You can find a better hotel when staying in Santorini.

The owner of the hotel Costas was a very rude and pushy person. He was in no way making the experience staying at Mathios Village pleasant. We were yelled at and ordered to do things as per his opinion only. Our luggage was not carried from our rooms to reception during check out and there were stairs ! The air con had a silly censor system which shut down each time we opened the balcony door. Thus, left in 34*c heat even in our rooms. There was no bath only a stand shower with a old white curtain. So the entire bathroom was wet after a shower - cringe! We had paid for bed & breakfast, for getting warm breakfast they charged us an additional 5 Euros. Who does that in a 4 star??No water offered in the rooms, no tea and coffee in the rooms. The service provided was worse than a Hostel. I would never ever recommend anyone to stay at this Hotel. They are understaffed and very rude!

This was a disappointing hotel

We had a great time in this island, but unfortunately the low point was our stay in this hotel. The rooms were clean and the pool was O.K. But the owner was very rude and aggressive. By trying to convince us to book his tours and eat in his restaurant, he made us very uncomfortable. He was visibly mad when I informed him we have made other plans. The most bizarre part was when we were leaving he accused us of not paying him properly for the breakfast, then he started to shout at my family and I in Greek. Now, I do not understand a word of Greek, but I could tell he was not complementing us. Go to Santorini BUT stay away from this place.

Pearl of a Hotel

This hotel is excellent for everybody: singles, couples and families - everybody was made very welcome by Kostas, the owner and his staff. The hotel is in Akrotiri, the quieter village in the south of Santorini - a haven after a hot day in Fira or spent on the beach. Kostas is a gem - someone who cares about his customers and takes time to get to know them. He is very helpful in organising your stay, booking transport or trips or just telling you what to try or avoid. This is a family run hotel and the food is excellent, fresh and home-cooked typical Greek cuisine (fish to die for) done to perfection by Tanya! Vasilli was on call all day and could not do more for you. The hotel and pool is immaculate. We arrived as guests but we ended up friends with Kostas and his family and staff. We'll definitely be back, hopefully in October! Try it for yourselves!

Rural retreat in the sun

This hotel represents excellent value for money and is a great base from which to explore the island. After visiting the busy and expensive towns of Fira and Oia it felt like Mathios Village in Akrotiri was our very own rural retreat in the sun. The caldera views that hike the prices up in the capital were available by just crossing the road outside the hotel.

Great hotel on quiet south side of island

Young couple staying in superior double room with nice balcony over looking the slightly larger pool. On arrival the reception and manager were very welcoming. We rented a quad-bike (and boat trip around the caldera) through the hotel to get around the island (which was great) and although we maybe paid slightly more than hiring independently the fact it was delivered to and picked up from the hotel we didn't mind too much (on the boat trip we were picked up from and dropped off back at the hotel). The room was great and very clean; it was cleaned every day without fail. The hotel restaurant was pleasant and reasonably priced compared to nearby places but we did not pay to have evening meals included in our hotel price so that we could go elsewhere. I think if you did this it would be cheaper still but with slightly more constricted meal times. The breakfast we did include with the price. This was basic and the most disappointing part of the stay, but hey we were on holiday so went out and had lunches while we were seeing the sites. The island really is lovely and away from the very pricey main towns this is an excellent hotel, would definitely stay there again and would recommend to friends and family. Thanks to everyone in the hotel for making our stay so lovely.

Will be back !

I made the reservation on a short notice and did not have too much time to shop around. This place met my expectations and I gladly recommend it to those looking to experience first-hand the Greek hospitality and the rough beauty of this island. Had I known that the owner functions as a travel agent also, gladly I would have delegated all the travel, car rental, site- seeing plans to him.I suggest to take the fast boat to get to Santorini and if you can drive a manual- shift , get car. We rent three rooms and all of them were impeccably clean. I loved sleeping in the loft .The staff was courteous and eager to please. The buildings and premises are well kept and reflect the local architectural tradition. The complimentary breakfast set the tone for each day and allowed me to start exploring the island without a delays.

Good hotel...close to few tourist attractions

Nice property with clean pools, good location close to a few tourist attractions. Owner is quite friendly but short staffed so don't expect a lot of personalised service. Decent restaurant option but limited menu. The only complaint was that they charged separately for a pool towel. Can arrange transport and even short tours on request.

Great Hotel, Helpful Staff.

When we arrived for our ten days on Santorini, we received a warm greeting from the owner and were immediately upgraded to one of the superior suites as the owner had a spare one available. It was a lovely room with a balcony overlooking the pool and we were able to keep it for the whole ten days. The hotel itself was beautifully presented and well maintained. The pool and restaurant area were gorgeous and the barman was excellent and very friendly. We ate there a couple of times and had no complaints although the bar closes at 10:30pm. The owner of the hotel was extremely helpful and we arranged our car rental through him and a boat trip to the nearby volcanic islands. It all went very simply and smoothly. The hotel is close to the village of Akrotiri which has some nice restaurants. One up the hill on the road towards the lighthouse was especially good and there's one with a panoramic view over the nearby islands, both perfect for sunset dinners! There's also a local shop next door which is perfect for buying packed lunches from. You will need to hire transport of some sort or use the local buses (cheap and regular) if you wish to visit the other towns on the island or get to the best beaches but Akrotiri is quiet, peaceful, pretty and close to the archaeological sites.

Great hotel - Highly recommended

This is a lovely little family run hotel in the village of Akrotiri. It is close to local shops and restaurants and benefits from spectacular views over the caldera. The manager, Kostas, goes out of his way to help you enjoy your stay. We were there in peak season and even so it was lovely and peaceful, despite the hotel being full. There are two well maintained pools and the "no swimming after 8pm rule" makes the area a lovely dining space in the evening. Mama's home cooked food is delicious and the waiting staff are friendly without being overbearing. The whole hotel has a lovely friendly feel, you really feel like you are holidaying with family. Kostas is phenomenal, his energy, enthusiasm and friendliness was second to none. He also has great ideas for itineraries during your stay and tries to save you money! I would definitely return to Santorini, it is breathtakingly beautiful and I would return to this hotel. Thank you Kostas and your team for a wonderful stay.

Nice hotel but far from Fira & Oia

Overall we thought the hotel and everyone who worked there was great! There was a little mishap with our pick-up from the port but it was solved thanks to some kind soul who called the hotel to tell them we were there (we didn't have a phone). Kostas is wonderful and very helpful and it was nice to rent an ATV on site but it was kind of expensive (80 euros for 2 days). We ate dinner at Mama's Restaurant one night and it was delicious. It was nice to see her actually back in the kitchen and cooking! However, we were told by some other guests that they won't give you any other restaurant recommendations because they want you to eat at Mama's: understandable, but still. The hotel was quiet and the pools were great. If you are staying with a family this hotel would be a good choice but it is kind of far from all the action; although the ride into town is beautiful and so much fun on an ATV!

Spectacular views, good value hotel

The location of this hotel is excellent. Just opposite is a spectacular view of the caldera. We took to watching the sunset there most nights. A lovely quiet beach is only 10 minutes walk down. It was a 10 minute climb back up but worth it. The bronze age Akrotiri excavation is within walking distance, and if you continue walking a little further, you reach the Red Beach. (A great view of the red cliff but a busier beach). I was so glad we stayed here rather than the main resorts such as Kamari as the views over the caldera are unmissable. There is a bus-stop outside the hotel with a frequent service to Fira and from there you can catch buses to other locations. The hotel also offer a travel agency and vehicle hire service but we didn't use this as we prefer to walk/get the bus. The hotel restaurant service and food were very good. My only negative point was the close proximity of the room to the pool and restaurant meant the peace and quiet we'd hoped for was sometimes disturbed by other guests. However, the restaurant closed at 11pm so the noise stopped after midnight. The pool was often quiet during the day too, depending on the guests. The hotel was good value, especially considering the location. There are a handful of other restaurants nearby but if you want lots of bars and restaurants in the vicinity (we didn't), this would not be the best location. You can also buy snacks and drinks from nearby shops.

eager to make cash...ready to make people wait

I did not feel welcome at this hotel. The owner will make you wait when you need to settle your bill. It is a lack of respect for his client's time. It denotes some patriarchal arrogance on his part or lack of trust for the rest of his staff. Almost as if he was doing you a favour, when in fact you are the client. With Ms. Nina, the young woman at the reception, again the sense is that that she is out to sell you something and the manner of talking of both of them comes across as slightly condescending. The shower was tiny, almost uncomfortably soo.... The internet signal in the room non-existant. The hotel is far away from the center of the city, so you will need to rent a car or a scooter. The toilets near the pool do not have soap. So how are people supposed to wash their hands. Not a bad hotel, but certainly not one I will want to return to soon... for the price, I can get much better, client oriented service.

While at this hotel, the staff were incredibly helpful. We made use of the travel agency inside the hotel for a day trip to the volcanic island and hot springs which was awesome (don't wear white or it'll stain orange). Our photographer was also incredible and a hair dresser came to the hotel to do my hair as well. We also rented an ATV through the travel agent and ad it dropped off at the hotel for us immediately. OK for our two day stay. Very nice pool. Staff and owner a little bit oriented to sell "aditionals" (breakfast, wifi, boat tours, rent vtt, etc). Although is not really bad, you don't really feel welcomed when you don't buy... and the wifi didn't get to the room after paying 3 euros. But Even with the "add ons" it was inexpensive.

Very Small Rooms & Expensive services

The time we arrived the Hotel informed us that they upgraded our room to a pool side view. It was very kind of them to do that however the rooms were very very small, with hardly any space to move around. The bathroom can hardly fit one person and the water was hard (salty). The hotel property is good and the location is also good enough, however its quite far from port or Airport. Airport services are very expensive, they charge you around Euro 25 for a scooter which would be available for hardly EURO 18 in prime locations like Mykonos. The restaurant of the hotel serves some amazing food and the service of the restaurant is also very good. Do not go by the pictures, especially for the size of the rooms. Staff is very friendly.

Great value, wonderful staff, terrific location!

If you are interested in this part of the island, I would highly recommend this family-run hotel. The staff is very accommodating, friendly, and helpful. The facilities are excellent--2 pools, and a very good restaurant on-site. On our stay, we had an early (5 am!) flight off the island--the manager went out of his way to locate a reliable car service for us, at a very reasonable price. The hotel is within walking distance to a few beaches, including the stunning Red Beach. The town of Akrotiri provides whatever shopping or eating needs you might have, although as mentioned the hotel restaurant is excellent with very good prices. I would highly recommend this hotel!

The hotel itself was pretty nice. Breakfast was good, the pool was nice and everything clean. The beds were uncomfortable. It's okay overall, our experience would have been a lot better if the receptionist wasn't so rude. We were really nice to her in the beginning but every time we asked her a question she would not try very hard to help us. She ripped up a receipt while looking at us with an offensive facial expression and said " I like doing that" and laughed. The manager of the agency who tries to sell you everything was nice and helpful however.

Idyllic setting with great attention to detail

Our host, Costos, was very friendly and welcoming. His family owns and runs the hotel. They first built a 10 room hotel with a pool, and later built another hotel next door, also with a pool! In between the two pools is a restaurant with floor to ceiling glass doors which open when it's hot. The matriach of the family cooks. The setting was idyllic and Costos created a sense of being part of a little community, with the way he chatted to everyone during the day and in the evening during meals and drinks. Mathios OK :-)

This hotel is very well kept and very clean, some of the rooms have village or sea views. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and we would be happy to stay there again. The island is very small, everywhere is close by, there is a bus stop outside, I would recommend a car for at least part of the trip. There is a small beach nearby, but a steep walk down, so again use a car. The hotel is small, with two pools, and a nice bar. The bar is shut from 15:00 to 18:30, there are no room facilities for tea or coffee. There is a small shop next door however. They did serve us a meal as we arrived during this closed time. The breakfast is adequate, but unvarying, some variety would be appreciated. We took towels, as did others, but they do hire out beach/pool towels. We went to Fira, the evening is best when the cruise ship people have left town. We preferred Oia to Fira though, if you have a car they are easy to get to. The beach areas of Perissa and Kamari are flatter for beaches etc. However they are nondescript usual Mediterranean stuff. The archaeological dig is near the hotel, and worth a visit to history buffs. The road opposite the hotel leads to the lighthouse, there is a restaurant on the way with glass front (it can be windy) the sunset is really good. As an aside, I have read a very few poor reviews of this hotel, this was not our experience, I do not understand these few reviews. It is not 5 star and should stand on its merits. I would be happy to return there.

We loved staying out of tourist areas and used our ATV to go to the beaches, into town etc. Also, the rooms are modest - but clean and comfortable and each one has a balcony which is perfect for sunsets and wine. Kostas the manager was full of helpful tips and always available. The hotel was a bit far from the main town, so if bar hopping and clubbing is your goal this would be a little tricky, but if a nice relaxing hotel is what you're looking for this place is the best - it is in a quiet spot and ideal for exploring the island. Clean, quiet, good value, and great customer service!

Hotel Mathios is the best hotel I’ve ever been to for customer service! Our ferry was 4 hours late departing from Athens and I had no way to call and tell the hotel. No worries though, our driver was waiting for us at 3:30am! He seemed unconcerned that it was so late and helped us find our room and key upon arrival to the hotel. Our room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. Kostas helped us quickly figure out how to make the most of our remaining 3 days. It included a catamaran volcano cruise which was leaving in an hour, but Kostas got hotel beach towels for us, informed the driver that we needed to stop for sunscreen, and were driven directly out to the boat, where they were waiting for us. This was expensive, but certainly the highlight of our trip! When we returned that afternoon, Kostas had arranged for our rental car to be delivered to the hotel, and stayed until we had signed paperwork. We drove around the island for the next two days, beach hopping. Kostas also arranged for us to just leave the rental car at the airport so we could still drive around on our last day there. The only thing I would mention is to get your breakfast included in the hotel price, it’s expensive per person otherwise. It was invaluable to us to have everything arranged so quickly and reliably by Kostas. Thank you so much!! We hope to come back again!

This hotel was very pleasant to stay at and by far the best hotel I stayed at in my whole trip of Europe. To stay at this hotel you need to have a hire car. But, the owner of the hotel is a travel agent and to hire a car in Santorini through him is very cheap. The staff there were very friendly and always smiling. The pools are amazing to lie next to and to swim in. The hotel is also very easy on the eyes and anywhere in Santorini is less than 20 minutes drive away. I most definitely will be going back! Lemonade

Why lemonade?. Because it felt like they wanted to made it and I was the lemon for it as they tried to squezee me as much as they could. The owner help us to rent a car which we were to able to choose and it was below average and not in great condition (it even had a hit at the back), rental in other island was cheaper but as Santorini is more touristic we thought it was ok but later on we found we could have rented a better car for less. Upon arrival we were asked for a credit card and passport and the owner kept my friend´s passport initially we thought he forgot to give it back but when we asked for it later he stated he kept everyone's passport. The day we left we could see that he had everyone's passport copy and only my friend's original. The shower leaked from one side of the door when you use it flooding the floor. It is posted that internet access is provided but when we asked for the password the receptionist said that we had to pay for it after asking the owner. Every question you make to the receptionist will be answered that you have to talk to the owner or that she has to ask him first. Breakfast is below average. TV signal was poor. If you want to stay there and you are planning to rent a car, moto or so rent it at the port. You will get a better deal and you can pick the one you want and you will avoid paying the hotel for transportation (a great savings).

Crazy old Greek owner screams at guest

This hotel has a nice pool area and some friendly staff. But be prepared to be yelled at by the owner if you don't follow the strict rules. In 2 separate occasions we witnessed the owner screaming at guests for minor issues such as taking coffee from breakfast room to the pool area. He grabbed the coffee from the guests and took it away. The rooms are outdated and Internet only works in the pool area. The towels are 30 years old and don't dare to take them to the beach. You definitely need a vehicle to get around as the hotel is 15 drive from the town. The bed sheets will not be changed as they only change it "every 3 days". The food in the hotel is good and well priced. The hotel would be fantastic if the old man retires.

The pool/bar area was lovely and the views great from across the road. The set meal deal was good value but there are some great authentic restaurants in the village 10 minutes walk away. Bus to Thira stops right outside - cheap and efficient but we were glad to escape back to the calm and space.

We stayed here for 1 week in Aug/Sept 2010. The two pools were wonderful to hop into at the end of the day! Pools were clean and the bar area was great. We ate there each night - the 4 course meal was authentic greek cuisine. Many of the dishes were in the Greek cookbook that I purchased while over there. We chose to not rent a car, but were able to easily take the bus to Fira from where we walked to Inmerovigli for amazing views. We also easily took the bus to Oia. We walked to the Red Beach (30 minutes) and down to Caldera Beach (10 minutes) several times. Excellent location, will definately come back. Staff were wonderful and friendly - very much a family run hotel. Quiet and the air conditioning worked! Kostas the manager was helpful to arrange trips and answer questions.

A beautiful island

Great Island, great staff, nice hotel. I thought my 4 night stay in Santorini was memorable. Great food on the island, beautiful weather and of course the incredible blue waters. Mathios is a good choice and a pretty good value.

Very pleasant stay

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Mathios Village. There was a very nice family atmosphere and we were made to feel at home. The location was good, with an easily accessible main road near the hotel which led you all around the island. Would recommend hiring a car to get about and see the rest of beautiful Santorini. The room was very clean and cleaned daily. Be aware that if your flight arrives after 10pm there's no reception desk, but they do leave a note and your room key for you to access the room. It would have been good to have known this before our arrival. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel.

If you like to enjoy the company of family and new friends and a relaxed atmosphere don't stay here!

IWe were told to be quiet twice in the afternoon when kids were playing in the pool, and asked at 11pm one night not to talk by the bar by a guest who was trying to sleep,as we sat enjoying the evening with 11 other guests . If we hadn't paid in advance we would have left after 2 days,as this was worst Hotel we had been to in last 25 years, just too many rules and and no flexibility from manager. We ate out every night after the first and spent as much time later in our trip at the Beach as we could. Many people were complaining and one couple walked out and went to another Hotel,Mr.Kosta tried to be nice on last 24 hours charged us Euros 30 to go back to the Airport and drove himself!!!! This Hotel needs to decide if it wants families or not and also customers that like a drink after dinner,as we all went out it would have been nice to meet other guests at the Bar after dinner.

"Akrotiri's Hotel Mathios is Wonderful"

I reserved the Grand Maisonette for 4-Half Board that included full breakfast and dinner for four adults. Our accommodations were lovely and charming. Kostas, the owner, was a wonderful host and the entire staff that help run this family owned hotel are friendly and professional. Our room had a small terrace with a table and two chairs that was perfect to enjoy a glass of Boutari Greek wine. Bring your own beach towels to use at the TWO kidney shaped pool(s) on the property. I suggest renting a car to explore Santorini. Very affordable and the most effecient way to get around the island. Hotel Mathios is approximately 10 miles from the airport and an easy drive. We went to Thira to walk around and were ultimately so happy that we did not choose a hotel in all the hustle and bustle of Thira. We took a beautiful drive to see the sunset in Oia that is not to be missed. Kostas was most helpful when my Mother's toe got infected from her walk up to the Acropolis in Athens. He referred us to a private doctor in Thira who was very knowledgeable and the medications he prescribed worked wonderfully. Lastly, dinners at Hotel Mathios were delicious homecooked traditional Greek cuisine. EVERY meal was four courses, excellent and not to be missed. Be aware that all beverages at dinner are purchased through the hotel and are reasonably priced. We would absolutely return to Hotel Village Mathios next visit because of the friendly family atmosphere, accomodations & delicious Greek food. Oopa!

A lovely stay

A lovely hotel. My room had a loft! I liked how the restaurant/bar was all windows and open to the pool area. The location is a bit remote, but it's very easy to rent a car to get around the island and car pickup/drop-off at the hotel can be easily arranged.

Lovely stay

The hotel is very nicely maintained and the staff were very accommodating. We were particularly pleased and very much entertained by Eddie from Romania. The village is off the beaten path, so it was very peaceful; we're glad that we rented a car - we were able to go to out-of-the way places in the vicinity. Would go back there again and stay at this hotel.

Amazing!

Hotel Mathios is one of a kind. I am in the wine business and have traveled many places but Santorini was a gem. We went there on our honeymoon not knowing what to expect. Costas the son and manager was sooo helpful. He set us up with a rental car (Which you need, trust me!) and set our trips. He made the trip stress free and the prices he got us were the best. He also pointed us to good wine. Being in the business i'm sometimes picky and one of the best wines on the island was their familie's. Also beautiful view with pool, vineyards and water. Can't wait to go back.

A lovely, quaint property with friendly service

What a lovely property. Not luxurious but charming and with great service. Its best feature is its outdoor space -- it is exactly as it looks in the hotel photos. Having dinner at the restaurant there is also a must. Mama's cooking is delicious and the prices are very reasonable. The breakfasts are more than adequate. If you're looking for a location out of the main tourist trap areas, this is the place to stay. We rented a car and drove to Oia and Fira. It was not only not that far but a really fun experience to do that. You see and experience so much more of the island that way.

Very nice family run hotel

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. We had a single and a double room. Both were upgraded at check-in. The hotel owner Costas speaks wonderful English and has a nice sense of humor. We were unaware that there was a dinner offered eacdh night for around 13 Euros. The breakfast was nice. Hard boiled eggs, coffe, tea, tomatoes, yogurt, honey, cheese and cereal. Would recommend. Was away from the action but there was parking and we used our car to get to the beaches and the towns of Fira and Oia. Recommend the black beach at Perivolos also.
