Hotel Grimsborgir is an exceptional retreat located in the heart of Iceland’s Golden Circle. The spacious rooms, hot tubs just outside the building, and excellent on-site dining made our stay truly unforgettable.
Hot tubs were nice and hot.
Nice stay
Great location and the staff were very easy to work with
Lovely hotel. Chalets based around a central reception. Near a lake but we didn't notice till we left. I was expecting a private hot tub but it was shared with 3 other rooms in the chalet. Breakfast was good.
Comfortable and clean.
Very well appointed rooms. Spacious and comfortable. Front desk staff was friendly. Breakfast was amazing. Excellent selection.
I liked the hot tub and property was quiet and clean. Food at restaurant was delicious and reasonably priced. This is where we got to see the northern lights
Great stay. Super breakfasts. Super hot hot-tubs!
Great stay. Super breakfasts. Super hot hot-tub. And Northern Lights! It would be even better if hotel adopted Dark Skies policies, as many guests like to catch the northern lights but there are too many poorly positioned path lights, patio lights and lights on the various buildings - and unfortunately it wasn’t possible to turn off or adjust lights.
Beautiful
Beautiful room, great food, nice staff
This was so not what i expected. Cozy robes, private patio, beautiful view of the auroras, quiet, comfortable, and phenomenal breakfast. I can not rave about it more.
Nicely kept property in heart of golden circle. Free breakfast was a plus
Service was impeccable, breakfast was outstanding, our suite was exactly as pictured and the private hot tub was wonderful. All of the servers were very friendly and the Arctic Char for dinner was delicious! I have already recommended the hotel to friends and will continue to do so!
Great hotel for visits to the golden circle. Close to Selfoss so easy to drive there for meals and visits. Rooms are very clean and proper. Very good breakfast.
We paid for a suite with a hot tub. Hot tub did not work and room smelled like farts. They let us use a hot tub in the uncleaned room across the hall. Really awkward walking back to our room soaking wet. Moved to that room the following day.
Dinner at the restaurant was excellent. Hot tubs are refreshed daily and clean. Great hotel space for families and gatherings.
Lovely!
Great! We were the only ones in the building which can house I think 4 other rooms. Had the hot tub all to ourselves! The room was spacious and beautiful as well.
It’s a beautiful and very clean hotel. It is quiet and the room size is great. The bathroom is also clean. Staff are great and courteous.
I had a small problem with my room, they immediately fixed it. The rooms were very nice and the restaurant was great too.
Simply outstanding - highly recommended.
Great location, quiet and dark. Great for viewing the Northern Lights from the numerous and spacious hot tubs. Excellent breakfast. Staff were very helpful and nice.
Everything about this hotel was excellent except the bed was pretty firm. It didn’t sleep nearly as well as I thought it should.
I loved the cleanliness and the staff was excellent and helpful, The included breakfast was good , the hot tub jets hadnt been cleaned in some time so we chose not to use it. The common area was nice though we didn't use it . Overall a pleasant experience and stayed a second night.
Gretat
Perfect place to end the perfect vacation
Food was good Service was perfect Great location for northern light Very clean and quiet
Great hotel. Highly recommend. Good breakfast too. Bed was comfy. Good balcony and view of northern lights. Radiant heat works extremely well. Very clean room. Staff was very nice. I would stay here again.
Breakfast buffet and dinner were excellent.
Nice hotel. Very clean and modern. Hot tubs nice. Breakfast buffet excellent. Nice to have hotel with restaurant as well. Location great to access many of Golden circle sites. Out in country so worked great to see northern lights from the property. Definitely a plus as well.
Even through, it’s a 4 star hotel, and charging tons of money, they are not considerate. We had to book 9 different hotels, and this hotel was picked by mistake at the wrong location, where we were not traveling. We contacted hotels.com within 24 hrs. Explained the situation, however the hotel personnel didn’t give any refund and chewed up all our money.
A bit of luxury!
Stayed for 2 nights in August and was very impressed. The rooms were modern, clean, spacious and comfortable. The whole place feels brand new. The hotel is not the cheapest in the area but it was worth the extra money for some extra luxury on our wedding anniversary. We had hot tub access and it was lovely to sit outside in the hot water on a cool and windy day. Grimsborgir is a great location for visiting Thingvellir national park. Breakfast was great and set us up for the day. We'll stay here again when in Iceland.
Good property
Excellent counter staff, beautiful room, very nice breakfast. Highly recommend.
Great service and help with getting around the area.
1- menu needs to add some more simple choices like: Hot dogs (Icelandic hot dogs are awesome!) Grilled cheese sandwich -fancy 3-cheese with tomato would be great 2-the male desk person was lovely & accommodating 3-there was a female desk person with no manners, or empathy for customers, sharp & rude. Ie: I was confined to bed with Covid for 3 days & went without a meal because she didn’t allow my order of bread (which was the only thing I could keep down) to be taken to the room by my husband. What was that? Only allowed to have bread in the dining room, she said.
Great location for stop over in Golden Circle. Expansive breakfast. Clean rooms and triple was great for our family. Ask for a room with a patio facing the mountain and not the parking lot.
Nice room, helpful staff, great breakfast buffet
Very classy hotel.
Lovely hotel in the highlands near Selfoss. Incredibly stylish in an understated way. Highlights included the individual outdoor hottubs with water pumped from underground and the breakfast, which was the best we had at any hotel in Iceland. Dinner at the restaurant was also good, but pricey. The location is perfect for easy access to the Golden Circle sites.
Difficult to find the Reception, Wrong reception address, Not worth the price
Clean, comfortable, private rooms in beautiful setting close to Kerid crater. Dinner was delicious albeit expensive but on site & worth it on our first night after easy drive from Reykjavik. Friendly staff all around. Soaking in the hot tub was the perfect way to end our long day of exploring the Golden Circle. Included big breakfast buffet with great variety. Highly recommend Hotel Grimsborgir!
Very nice hotel with nice rooms and bathrooms.
restaurant was great, cool property with big rooms and great view, close to the golden circle. would defiantly stay here again. the only thing that we didn't like was the knats.
Would not return and stay again.
The apartment was nice but there were tons of little bugs outside which made it impossible to walk or use the hot tub. The receptionists were curt and seemed like they were tired of tourists.
The property is beautiful, and the apartments are spacious and comfortable! I only wish the showers were enclosed as it causes a mess outside while using it! Too many mosquitoes in the area too
Our stay was mostly pleasant. The room was spacious, clean, and conveniently located. We appreciated the accommodating staff and the complimentary breakfast. The restaurant offered decent food options as well. It's a great choice for families or larger groups of friends. To enhance the guest experience, we suggest considering a few improvements. The room temperature regulation could improved since the thermostats do not completely shut off and it could be warm at times. Sunlight block out curtains during the summer months would be helpful. Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel.
It was large, clean, and convenient.
Great hotel! Clean and comfortable. The food at the restaurant was also really good. Loved our waitress. Would recommend to travelers.
The rooms are in houses. Each hose has 3-4 big rooms that shares common area, kitchen and hot tub. It’s excellent for group of friends and Families.
Hotel room was very comfortable. Only suggestion is to get to breakfast earlier than later to avoid crowds. Good selection and very tasty.
Large spaces, comfortable apartments, great hot tub, and fantastic food!
We liked the food and the options for allergies. Breakfast was extraordinary! Beautiful suite, super clean. Plenty of space. Only issue was room was hot and curtains did not darken room enough. Expensive but worth it!
The place was great for our family since we all had our own bedrooms but a comfortable shared space to gather together.
Very nice yet remote and blended well into the surrounding environment
Lovely hotel setting in The Golden Circle
Lovely hotel in a beautiful spot with easy access to all of the attractions in and around the Golden Circle of Iceland. The best part was the comfort of the bedding, large space, & great amenities in the large bathroom. We upgraded to include a private hot tub, which was wonderful at days’ end. The dining room was very nice and spacious with an excellent breakfast buffet and a The dining room was very nice and spacious with an excellent breakfast buffet included, and a delicious dinner option, self-pay. Our only issue was the fact that the radiant heat in the flooring was set too high. While comfortable on your feet, it warmed up the room to nearly 80°. It was not adjustable nor could we turn it off. We had to sleep with the patio door open all night and a fan blowing to keep us from sweltering. This is highly unusual in the country of Iceland, and they do not have air conditioning. We arrived on an unusual sunny & warm day for Iceland, and that translated to a very hot hotel room. As we were approaching the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, the sun never went down and it never got dark. So sleeping was tricky to begin with, but we had heavy drapes and eye covers. The main problem was the stuffiness of the room.
Beautiful and spacious rooms. Clean. Rooms were very warm but they gave me a fan when requested. The bar area as attached to the restaurant and quiet. Breakfast food was delicious and many options.
The hotel is secluded which I like but there were no food options unless you drove for 10-15 minutes. The room was unbearably hot. We slept with the balcony doors open as we could not cool the room with the thermostat.
Wonderful facilities including the hot tubs and restaurant! The room was very comfortable for 3 and the bathtub was luxurious. Only ding was we arrived a little after 11pm and there was NO ONE around. I had to message the hotel on Facebook to get someone to check us in.
Well incorporated into the landscape. Immaculate property, well maintained. Rooms met high expectations.
Pleasant enough stay
Beautiful place, great team
We had a wonderful stay here! Front desk staff, especially Dumi, were very helpful and accommodating. The included breakfast was a great way to start our day. Highly recommend and would stay at Hotel Grimsborgir again!
Wonderful experience. One of the best hotels I have stayed at.
We were travelling around Iceland and stopped and stayed here for 1 night on our anniversary. The suite was clean, dinner and drinks were good.
Luxury family stay
Location is remote enough for the feel of the Iceland experience whilst being close to all of the main golden circle attractions. The houses are well appointed for families with fantastic beds and pillows!
Location was amazing! But problems with patio door, safe locker, and housekeeping was not great
This place was awesome! Super clean and the staff were so very nice! The rooms had robes and slippers included so that was a bonus - especially with the snow outside! When we arrived to checkin, we were told the receptionist had just stepped away for a few, so the bartender (at the connecting restaurant) invited us to have a complimentary drink at the lounge area by the bar. So nice! And it was only a 2 min wait!! I had a lovely time here - also dined at the connecting restaurant and the food was amazing! Breakfast was also included so great deal! Would definitely recommend!!
We stayed in the 4 bedroom lodge. Was very big and spacious. We had our own hot tub . Great for families and only 15 minutes drive from the local town of Selfoss. Staff really polite and friendly - nothing was too much. Food was also good
The property is beautiful, the staff were very accommodating, and we loved our stay. The room was the highlight, big cozy bed with plenty of pillows, large, awesome tv, large bathroom with heated floors, and great shower. Negatives are just nitpicks: our hot tub didn’t work so we had to change rooms, food at the restaurant was just ok, and the locks on the room were unnecessarily difficult. Loved it and would definitely return.
A Must Stay
Our stay was perfect! The room was clean, comfortable, and aestethically pleasing. We were upgraded to a junior suite for free. We enjoyed a 5- course meal that was absolutely delicious in the restaurant. The staff was helpful and friendly. We highly recommend a stay here!
We arrived to be told the restaurant and bar was closed for a party so no facilities available. Given the location, we found this completely unacceptable. We were told we had been emailed 2 days in advance to be informed of the situation but I had not received the communications. After a long day of travelling our only option was to drive away to find food. The staff were unhelpful in this situation, we got offered a box to take from the party buffet. The rooms were quite basic and the breakfast was poor. Way over priced and over stated in quality.
Nice and private with everything you need onsite.
We love this hotel and we will definitely go back
Expected more given how much we paid for the hotel. Breakfast was laid out well but limited vegan / vegetarian options. Room was incorrectly set up for our family even though it was made clear at the time of booking. The staff resolved the issue but it took some time and that’s frustrating after a very long day. We were given a disabled room when we hadn’t requested it. The shower drain wasn’t functioning properly so we couldn’t have proper showers, and if you did, you would flood the bathroom. Really surprised they allocated this room as it was quite clear that no one had checked if everything was functioning properly. No upgrade or benefits given despite VIP Access. Very disappointed.
The rooms and suite were so inviting, lovely and peaceful feeling. The hot tub was a treat. The easy walk to the dining room and the delicious food was wonderful. The pillows would have felt much better in down and the mattress was too hard,.
Great Hotel
Charming hotel. Had a suite with outdoor hot tub. Very good service. Breakfast was nice. Great location.
Top notch service. Good room. Good minibar. My best stay in Iceland so far
The Grimsborgir is a nice hotel
The Grimsborgir is a very pretty hotel located near a number of great sites and attractions, but not actually in the town of Selfoss. The rooms are a bit small, but the views are lovely and the amenities good. The staff is pleasant and helpful. The hotel restaurant, however, needs work. The arctic char was quite dry, the marinara sauce on the pasta was a little too sweet, and our entrees came out haphazardly rather than all at once. Not what I expect at an expensive restaurant.
Staff was friendly and helpful. We rented 2br apartment and it was just ok. Very cramped and our family of 4 couldn't sit in living room and watch movie comfortably together. Also - my recommendation would be to add lighting to the bathroom, very dark. Overall - would give property 3 out of 5 stars.
Great place to stay. Very nice and clean
Good hotel in the area of the golden circle Convenient to visit the beatufull sightseeing of this area
Good location to visit the Golden Circle. Very good and comfortable rooms.
We were so pleased we chose Hotel Grimsborgir for our stay. It is in a beautiful location, easy to get to lots of different places of interest and the scenery is amazing. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the accommodation was so comfortable and warm. The hot tub was a lovely addition.
Nice boutique property
Restaurant was amazing, should have ate there every night, nothing compared. Rooms we great and clean. Staff was amazing, beyond accommodating.
Was not a 5 star hotel. No amenities
Perfect location Friendly staff!
The staff was very nice and friendly. The room was very comfortable. The property had beautiful views.
The rooms were nicely appointed. The shared hot tubs between the units were regularly drained, clean, freshly filled and easy to operate from the panels at each unit. The buffet breakfast was excellent - fresh omelette station, fresh juices, breads and pastries as well as vast assortment of other options. The only problem we had was dealt with promptly and professionally by Helga.
Beautiful place. great dining including breakfast and dinner. Very happy with hotel.
Restaurant was very poor both for dinner and breakfast. Hot tubs were poorly maintained
Everywhere you look they have 5 stars printed on everything, from the staff clothing to the vans . This property is far from 5 stars, and they have just decided to call themselves 5 stars based I presume on the other accommodations in the area. We booked a suite , not a junior suite but a suite, now within my extensive travel experience a suite within a 5 star hotel offers a bedroom and a separate sitting area. This is not the case, these suites offer a bed with a couple of chairs at the end of a bed to watch TV. It is merely a larger single room. The really strange thing is that these suites were once car garages attached to the apartments they also offer. They replaced the doors to the garage with windows, the ramped up brickwork outside to originally get the car into the stalls are still there. The room itself is a total IKEA showroom, all of the furnishings, fixtures and cabinets are from IKEA. So your suite is a converted garage stall that feels like a college level decorated space. The closet is 12” deep so you can’t put your bags away and close the doors. The bathroom mirror is delaminating . The mini bar was never restocked after 4 nights. The breakfast was a completely self serve affair of meaningless food. They don’t even bring you coffee. They display all of their bottles of wine with price tags hanging off them in the food hall, how tacky. Obviously no room service, no turn down, no extra towels etc, all things that are required to be 5 stars.
The property is very nice. The proximity is great for the golden circle but it is at least 15 minutes from the town and restaurants so you would have to eat there or plan accordingly. The only true disappointment was that the curtains were very shear and the shades didn’t all cover the whole window in all but the small twin room. The room stayed very light which was not comfortable to sleep when it doesn’t get dark in the summer and there was only one full bath which I should have checked before booking. We stayed in a 4 bedroom. The service and food was excellent and you are very close to Golden Circle attractions.
Good
More than we expected. It was beautiful, practical and quiet. The staff was always professional, friendly and helpful. We hope to stay again.
Amazing Stay
Our stay was great, the team went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable with children. The actual house were we stayed was delightful and the breakfast at the hotel was the cherry on top. I would definitely stay here again, the northern lights even popped up for a visit!
Luxurious place to stay - shame about the food
We stayed here for 1 night after a week in Iceland. It was lovely to spend our final night here. The room was gorgeous, very large, beautiful and clean. The hot tub was also a bonus, and we were lucky enough to see the northern lights whilst taking a soak. Couple of niggles we felt were firstly apart from the hotel there is no other light pollution so when the northern lights came out it would have been great if we were not staring straight at very bright street lights that are dotted around the hotel grounds. Secondly the food was nice but wasn't amazing for the price paid. we had a very similar meal in another hotel the night before which was half the price and tastier too. However i would still thoroughly recommend this hotel, just for the luxurious experience and would definitely stay again but would skip the restaurant next time
A Spectacular Location let down by housekeeping
Sadly I felt that the stay experience fell short of the “5 star” experience advertised on the hotel website. The staff were friendly and the all was well in the Reception/restaurant building. However preparation of the apartment was disappointing as it had not been well serviced for our arrival. For example the featured hot tub was only partially filled and the coffee maker contained a used filter from a previous visitor. The area had experienced recent heavy snow. For guest safety I would have expected some gritting of the sheet ice immediately outside the apartment door.
The location was good for sightseeing itinerary. We splurged for a 5 star hotel, however this property misses the mark in this category. Rooms are nicely decorated, and staff was friendly. Unfortunately our room faced a building under construction. Not something I was expecting at the price. Beds are comfortable, but might be considered way too soft for some. I would have preferred to have paid less to stay somewhere with more local charm.
Beautiful place
