Value for money and friendly welcome!
Amazing stay. Use this place loads and its total value for money. Can’t argue with the pricing which is half if its closest rival and with the pub joined which has great staff and entertainment; you can literally fall out the pub into bed!!!
Room cold. Heater didn't seem to work properly. Shower door couldn't open, so could use shower. Room and "bathroom" dirty, although beds clean. Rugs breaking up. Really shouldn't be available for guests.
This is an older hotel in need of refurbishment
As previously highlighted.
The above choices do not require any further comment.
Bit rough but worth the money 🙌
It was looked shoddy.
Not What I Expected
Our stay was just ok but not what I expected. Entrance through a very busy pub/bar, cobwebs in the room and noise from the bar at night.
Lots of fun, loved the bar and the room was very cozy.
Comfortable but work in progress.
I’d give this 3* based on price we paid, room was warm and comfortable but the hotel is clearly being renovated and the room needs a bit of tlc. Fine for a night and has potential for future.
It was what we paid for cheap and cheerful, one night only.
Everything highlighted.
Only thing i can really complain about is the shower it aas either to cold or to hot cpuldnt get the right temperature with it bo matter how much i tried but apart from that not a bad hotal
Filthy and loud
You sleep above a dingey, LOUD pup - prepare for no sleep. We kinda knew what we were in for but needed a keep stay and for that it done the job but an awful place. It's filthy and so dated, it was a laugh or cry situation and we just had to laugh, get out head down and leave as soon as possible.
As previously highlighted in review.
Likeable.
The property is in need of a facelift, but the room was fresh and fresh clean. Staff were very helpful.
Great value for money in the centre of Oban very clean, quiet with friendly staff. We would stay again.
Room was clean and tidy. Entrance via locked door was damp smelling which would put you off but once inside room was excellent for price. One problem was we are 69 and there was so many stairs to room. Real friendly place but next time ld ask for a lower floor room. Our fault for not requesting.
really pleasant night
A basis inexpensive well located place
Never booking here again
totally dirty and run down
Good price close to water front
Rooms are clean, beds are comfortable, good basic accommodation.
It was shocking for £70.00 a night. My room was disgraceful and shabby. The hotel/pub was full of drunk people wandering around the corridors shouting. Loud inside and out. Karaoke could be heard until gone 1.00am. A rough place and rough experience all round.
As with previous reviews the place needs a total refit. When I booked I had read the reviews and new what to expect . The room was cheap and we got what we paid for . The bar is good with nice staff. Black linen is a no no !
The building is quite run down- the hostess was fine - the place was OK or should I say , an experience !
Decent room, value for money in a tourist town.
It is important to remember that this is a pub first with rooms playing second fiddle. That said, the room was good for the price and just distant (meaning on the second story) to where the noise, even on a Saturday night, could not be heard. There was even a separate entrance having a key so the drunks could be avoided. I'd stay there again, given the price.
All good
Filthy window, bathroom and shower Lounge filled with empty cans and food waste, pizza boxes with half eaten pizza in them Peeling wallpaper, threadbare stair carpets poor paintwork Needs complete overhaul or demolition
Clean and comfortable although above a pub very quiet. Excellent location for town and travelling. Made to feel welcome. Plenty of eating places round about. Would highly recommend this accomodation
This is very close to the station and ferry terminal, there is reasonable paid parking nearby. Very central to town. The bar is nice. The hotel maybe a bit rundown but for the price you cant complain, it has a shower and internet TV
Clarendon hotel
Staff were okay but we had to enter and leave through a side door or walk through the bar. The room we were in had mould in the bathroom and the plaster above the bed was cracking and looked like it had a water leak. The beds are comfortable but not over comfortable. The view from the window was of a slate roof.
I enjoyed my stay at the Claredon. Aside from having to navigate some narrow stairs with my luggage, I don’t have any complaints. The room was warm, dry, and quiet, which was a nice reprieve from the Argyll rain. All in all, I would stay again!
above a pub. stair carpet worn and dirty. corridors dark. damp smell everywhere. rooms dirty and mouldy. toilet aeat broken and chipped. flooring ripped. shower enclosure mouldy and dirty. curtains ripped.
Great little location pretty much in the middle of Oban and walking distance from everything Ok its got some stairs to get to your room, but the rooms are quiet clean simple and do the job perfectly. My 3rd visit this hotel and this is now my first choice hotel in Oban. I will be back
Fine
Starry in the Clarey
I have stayed there many a time Big Erika runs a brilliant down to earth Hotel and pub simples
The hotel is very very outdated. Wallpaper, paint mould is falling from the walls. The cobwebs have grown cobwebs. The bathroom window is held sut with a towel or two. The toilet nearly falls off when you sit you arse down. The shower is the perfect size for a little person. Once you get past the cobwebs, mould and you come come out dirtier than when when you went in. Beds was ok covers were clean beds rattled. Ive saved the positove toll last
Claredon Hotel
Budget room very clean and hospitality tray excellent. Bathroom a wee bit tired as was the room but the comfortable bed and clean bedding made up for it. Had an issue with the TV not working but this was rectified immediately. Good access to restaurants as no food offering at hotel. Would defo make a return visit.
Exactly what was needed to suit our trip
Great location for ferry. Furnishings and decor a little tired. Staff v helpful and friendly.
When you walk in you’re taken aback by the decor and the old pub look. The lady behind the bar was pleasant enough but too busy to talk to me as she was on her own. All the men were staring at me so I hid in the corner until eventually the lady came out. My room was on the top floor and there’s no lift. A nice customer took my case up for me. In the morning I had to bump it down 3 flights of stairs. It was cheap and dated and scruffy. And there’s no food at all!! You have to go elsewhere for something to eat. It needs renovation and a reception desk and new beds and my door was broken. I won’t go there again.
Hideous, do not stay here.
The worst hotel stay ever. Filthy damp and smelly. Mould water and leak stains on ceilings. Abominable bathroom. The communal areas full of old furniture. Fire doors wedged open, fire escape rusted, fire alarm system beeping for 3 days. Electrical putlets didnt work. Curtains were torn. A disaster waiting to happen. Honestly, go to a backpacker, it will be better. The only positive, linen was clean, staff friendly.
This hotel is above a bar but we had a top floor room so wasn’t too bad for noise. The room was and bathroom are basic but good. The places needs a bit of TLC but for a short stay is great room has everything you need and is comfortable
Not a hotel, but a pub with rooms
Claredon hotel
Enjoyed my stay at the claredon staff were helpful and friendly room was clean and comfortable everything i needed would recommend to stay here
If you want a high brow place, don't go, it has wallpaper coming off and cracks BUT the Best connection to the city center , A great budget place for me !!
Excellent value and accessible to all amenities.
Was an ok place with ok furniture and ammenities, but the location was great and good vale for the price paid.
Vomit on the carpet stairs!
The in keeper was nice enough, but the hotel is really gross, old, run down and unkept. The pub downstairs is loud and lots of smoke. We went for a walk and when we came back the carpeted stairs were full of vomit! The makeshift shower is pathetic, TV stopped working and wouldn’t turn off, and the beds are very uncomfortable. Do not keep this hotel in your porfolio. It makes you look bad!
Good
It’s great value for money. Right next to the train station, the ferry terminal and Wetherspoons (good pub food, handy for early breakfast). I’d definitely stay there again.
Value for money
Both our rooms had new carpets, comfortable beds , clean towels and a hospitality tray. Neither of us could get the water warm enough for a shower. The staff are friendly and helpful and the bar is our favourite in the town, it is as described in the hotel information. The location is excellent for all services .
You need to go into pub to get the key not very pleasant. We were at the top with lots of stairs. The hotel is very old and need upgraded. No hot water shower broken as only cold water. The room was clean and for the price ok. Wouldn’t come again
This hotel is very well located. Very good price compared with other Oban hotels, so understandably there are issues. The property is in poor repair, shabby and run down, however everything worked. The bedding and towels were clean, the coffee making facility was excellent, staff helpful and pleasant and regular cleaning and housekeeping. Well located hotel right in the town.
Cheap and cheerfull
This is cheap and cheerful hotel. The staff were lovely and location is central. Negatives - very outdated, not sound proof at all (I was awakened by someone snoring on the floor below me), photos were deceiving I actually dont know if the hotel comply with buildling regulations as it is literally falling apart. No hot water in the taps (shower does have hot water).
Great people very friendly. Very fairly priced .not the ritz but great base to see oban and enjoy the in house entertainment. Great time
Choices highlighted explain
Noise at night neighbours TV is loud
Mouldy showers, room smells of smoke, really poor state
Ceiling had damage. Not updated and no WiFi offered
This is an older property in the heart of the town - its clean enough and good value for money - ideal for an overnight stay
Perfect for the insomniac or if you just want a roof over your head and nothing more. Karaoke enthusiasts will love the loud music til 2am where you can listen and sing along in bed. Added bonus when the pub closes and everyone leaves laughing and shouting til even later in the early morning. Someone set off the hotel smoke alarm at 4am just to make sure we didnt sleep. I was counting the minutes to leave in the morning.
Just what we needed
Wasn't the Ritz but was ideal for us. Somewhere to get some sleep after a fun day exploring. Family room was nice and clean with it's own bathroom. Staff were friendly and helpful when we needed them, as were patrons in the pub. Very handy for everything, right in the centre of Oban, walking distance to all the things we wanted to do.
Perfectly fine. The room was clean and tidy. The only slight quibble was the skylight window didn’t have a blind so the sun came in early but overall it was excellent value for money
Hosts are welcoming and it's in the heart of the city and the place is good and prices are less
The staff was very welcoming and accommodating. The hotel itself is very old and run down. The rooms are all old with cobwebs, peeling paint, peeling flooring, etc. The room is above the bar which is open until 3 on Fridays, so you arent likely to fall asleep easily.
You will not sleep.
WARNING. This is a bar with rooms above it! Loud live music kept our family up all night. Would rather sleep on the street.
The property is a bit dated and needs a bit of refurbishment, our room was spacious as was the bathroom very clean comfortable bed right down town close to all you want see and do the only down side was having to climb three flights of stairs not a problem for me but possibly for those with mobility issues. a popular down to earth bar with a boisterous local clientele over all we had a good experiences
Beds were comfy but building smells damp and looks a bit dilapidated. Our room had a bit of a slope. Took ages to get hot water in the shower and then when it did the water wasn't draining so only one of us could take a shower. No on-site staff to refer to first thing in the morning
I wish I'd read the reviews before booking! The paper was hanging off the walls, the toilet didn't flush properly, no hot water so couldn't even shower. The walls are very thin and there is quite a bit of noise from people going in and out of the pub below. There are plenty other, much nicer accommodations in Oban to book with.
Great location handy for everything, budget hotel so not fancy but clean and functional.
Ok for the money
Noisy on a Friday night. Great location for train, Wetherspoons and harbour
Very comfortable
Hotel was old and dated but the room was recently renovated and very comfortable
Good value stay. Beds were comfortable. Bathroom clean. The provided portable heater came in handy. The shower was an enigma at first, but once figured out, water was adequately hot. If you want daily maid service and 24/7 lobby, this is not for you. Great accessibility to train station, ferry terminal, restaurants, convenience stores, downtown Oban. No car needed.
Just what I needed for an overnight stay before the Mull ferry
Not the Ritz but does the job!
Not super fancy but the lady checking us in was lovely, the bed was clean and comfy and the shower was hot. Tea and coffee and a hair dryer in the room. Very close the the sea front and all the shops and bars. Would recommend if you're looking to stay in Oban on a budget and don't mind if things are a bit rough around the edges.
Room was clean, but very tired, wall paper coming away in the bathroom area and Luke warm hot water. The bedding was clean. In fairness you get what you pay for and it’s advertised as a budget hotel.
Wasn't very clean, there was cob webs and spider webs, lots of dust, carpet didnt look vacuumed. The shower didn't drain (while waiting for the hot water to come through the shower bottom basin filled up and didn't drain until the morning). I didnt even end up having a shower and had a sponge bath instead from the sink. Misleading as the property says it has WiFi, however there wasnt any in the room.
Every this was handay
Quite poor
This is very dated hotel/Inn. It is ok for one/two night stay. The staff is good and friendly, but rooms are tired and just in need complete refurbishment. The bathroom is in a terrible state. The room was clean.
Old style inn above a proper pub. No real amenities. Good location. Nothing fancy.
It advertises budget accommodation & thats definitely what we got. Staff & locals were really friendly & helpful. We only needed one night & there were lots of eateries for dinner and breakfast to choose from. The location is ideal for the shops & for investigating what Oban has to offer in its centre. Our room was on the 3rd floor. We kept getting the smell of cigarette smoke which continued until the next morning. The floor was uneven, decor in dire need of an upgrade and it hadn't been cleaned properly as there were cobwebs all over a wall & behind the beds. The toilet/shower had a sliding door that didn't fit properly so no privacy at all, just as well we were family! If we come back to Oban we wouldn't stay here again. Overall the interior would benefit from a freshen up.
Terrible!
We couldn’t not get into the property and had to ask a guest to contact the manager.
Lovely place for an overnight
Super reasonably priced and convenient location to train and ferry. I was v comfortable and would use it again !
Water through ceiling
My room was up three flights of stairs - no lift. The room and bedding seemed clean but mattress was lumpy. Smoke alarm had been removed! There was a stain on the ceiling and sure enough water began to come through at 5am in the morning. Brochures and ferry timetable were ten years old!
Stayed 2 nights family of 4 places is basic but clean enough. Staff friendly helpful
The location is great. The staff is very friendly. There is a bar downstairs, great craft Scottish beer. Very relaxed feel. Property is old, had to carry luggage upstairs, and water heater a bit hard to figure out, but for the price we are paying, it is unbeatable. Thanks for wonderful Oban and Isle of Mull experience.
For the price, I was on my own and paid 54 quid. I thought the standard was poor. It's run down and scruffy. It's location is good for train station and ferry. Above a pub. The noise wasn't too bad. It's an old hostel pretending to be a hotel and it ain't that. If there were 2 staying and sharing the hill, Id have less of an issue. Also the info,on Expedia, said no bedding and they did provide bedding and towels both acceptable.
Great value stay in oban, everything in walking distance, very friendly staff
We were on the top floor with no lift. That was a real problem.
The property location was fantastic being in centre of town, 2 minutes walk from train station. The hotel accommodation was basic and needing some serious TLC but for us it was exactly what we were going for somewhere to put our heads down and have a shower as we were on stag do we had 1 of the family rooms which was idea with all the amenities. The staff in bar down stairs where very helpful and the live music was brilliant 👏 So on behalf of myself and stag party i would like to thank the staff and owner of claredon hotel for a great weekend 😀
A cheap and cheerful hotel, clean, but in need of a good tidy up and paint job. Bookin was great, staff in bar were exceptional.
Great place to stay convenient for everything also good craic would stay again.
Suited our needs, conveniently located.
The room was very clean and it was very quiet the only thing was all the stairs, just tpp many
The room rarely had hot water for showering
Give it a pass
Given the number of high ratings, my wife and I expected something completely different. My guess is that all the high ratings came from people who were close friends of the owner or who currently live in tents in a back alley. The walls hadnte been painted in decades, the window didn't close, the room was constantly musty, washroom was a DIY job done in 1970 and in need of repair, bed sheets were suspect and room door security was questionable. This place is a step below a hostel but priced at the level of a 3 star hotel. If it was priced at 25£ a night I wouldn't be so harsh. But 50£ is a real stretch. You've been warned.
Overnight at the Clarendon hotel
Amazing hotel with great facilities - public bar was excellent
