Wonderful place to stay to be part of the stassi experience, have amazing views across the gravina, and still be relatively peaceful in terms of not being in the middle of the tourist tracks.

Astounding area in Sassi, Matera

Location, location, location….👍 Room and facilities are awesome. The only issue, there is limited shuttle as there is no parking around the hotel, so one has to wait. But other than that, everything was beautiful!

The staff, service, breakfast and views were out of this world!! Not sure what I did to get a room that opens up to the amazing view of the caves across the ravine. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Excellent hotel in Matera

Excellent room/apartment built into rock Great view outside towards the caves opposite Room well equipped no windows apart from the doors at entrance so not a lot of natural light but with so much to do you don’t spend too much time in room 😀

The staff is very accommodating. They told us what places to see and how to get there. They also made reservation for restaurant and provided transportation to and from parking. The location has wonderful view and the breakfast is fantastic.

The property is perfectly situated at the side of a mountain canyon offering spectacular views, far from the noisy streets, although you might get the small groups of tourists with their guide. I think it is one of the best locations in town. You are just minutes away from many great restaurants and shops, but it is also tranquil most of the day. No one would know the beautiful caves are actually part of a hotel. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, speaking a few languages. Very responsive, most of our extra requests were completed within a reasonable time. The hotel offers free shuttle from many parking areas in Matera to the hotel, otherwise inaccessible by your own car as the ZTL is in effect most of the day.

The property is located in the Sassi- these are stone cave dwellings of ancient times. They are amazing. Our hotel room was a modern version with beautiful design appointments and a spectacular view.

What wonderful surprise! Great communication with front desk with options to a free or paid parking plus free shuttle RT to hotel and back. Rooms are in the cave spread out and beautiful chic modern Italian decor. Delicious breakfast and fantastic staff. Definitely will be back and suggest to friends and family

Overall nice

The property is well located and has a stunning view. The property has a great location close to a lot of major sites and dining options. From the initial shuttle service to our car and hospitable staff, the hotel is a great stay.

Clean and well located

This is the best hotel we have ever lived in Italy. Very unique and super spacious considering its location. The staff was so caring and very informative. Our whole experience here was amazing.

This hotel was so cool! The view is stunning! We definitely appreciated the free parking outside of the downtown (perfect directions provided by the hotel) and the shuttle to/from the hotel. The room was spacious and had a loft. We were 4 people and had lots of space. The lighting used was perfect for the cave setting and the light up furniture was a hit with my kids. We also appreciated having AC as it was very hot in June. The surrounding area was easily walkable (but be warned, there are a lot of stairs in matera!) and we got to the various sites easily. Breakfast was included and was great. Would definitely recommend this hotel!

I would give the service at this place 10 stars out of 5 if I could! We arrived at some random bus stop in the bottom of town because their main station is closed for remodeling, so I didn't really know where we were when I called the shuttle. Nino just asked me the name of the street & came to get us. By the next morning, we had fallen in love with the town and changed our itinerary for the rest of the trip to spend more time in Matera, but they didn't have space for us to stay longer. They called around and found us a place at another amazing hotel. When it was time to check out, they had it all arranged to simply simply transfer our bags and pick up new keys at the other hotel. As for the hotel itself, the rooms were huge, clean and very unique. Very cool hotel in an amazing town.

We had a great stay at Basiliani. The room was large and very nicely decorated. Excellent breakfast and staff.

Amazing location

If I could give more than five stars to this hotel, I would. The staff were welcoming and helpful, and the location perfect -- beautiful views just outside our door and transportation a short essy walk away. Our room was spacious and clean, and the beds were comfortable. We enjoyed the simplicity of the furnishings, which complemented the hotel's surroundings. The breakfast bar was delicious! Thanks to everyone at Hotel Basiliani for a beautiful vacation.

Our experience was absolutely perfect. The hotel provided clear and courteous parking instructions, a super fast shuttle (to and from the free parking area), fast check-in and luggage assistance all the way into our room. The room is clean, spacious, modern enough to feel fun and yet it retains the feeling of the Sassi. The town is beautiful and the people are so kind and out-going. Our breakfast was wonderful and fresh each day and they make espresso and cappucino for you as well. We hope to come back to Sassi di Matera and will definitely stay here.

Wonderful experience in a cave! Beautiful, clean room with an incredible bathroom with spa shower. Easily accessible hotel (great shuttle service to and from parking) within historic part of city with tremendous view of caves and canyon! Friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff and great breakfast. Unique cave rooms with in an amazing setting. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Shuttle picks you up but close to many excellent restaurants and shops. Beautiful town with an incredible history. Breakfast was very good and plentiful.

Such a unique place. Worth the visit and stay

This hotel is in a very good location. The sunrise view is spectacular. The apartment is quite impressive and very large. The breakfast is terrific. There are pleanty of choices.

Roberto, Nino at front desk plus Roberto driver are all awesome. Great location, breakfast and hotel. A little dark at night though, could use an extra light or two for the walkway area. Other than that this is a wonderful stay.

The location of H Basiliani is absolutely stunning, on the side of the gorge, in the middle of Matera's sassi area. There are cave dwellings (some renovated, some not) either side of the hotel buildings, and the breakfast terrace and some of the rooms (including ours) have panoramic views across the gorge at older caves on the other side. Our room was very large (split level, obviously meant for a family rather than just the two of us!), calm and comfortable. My only criticism is that the bathroom was about due for another coat of paint. Because the hotel is in the historic area, you cannot drive to it. You need to leave your car somewhere in the modern part of town (the hotel can advise on a choice of car-parks), and then call the hotel, who send their shuttle to collect you and your luggage. They also offered to shuttle us back to our car if we wanted to go out for the day, but there is enough in Matera (within walking/climbing distance) to keep you busy for a couple of days, so we didn't bother. I have read complaints about people waiting for the shuttle - this is only a small hotel, so there are only one or two vehicles - as long as you know there might be a wait, I don't see this as an issue. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and I can't think of a better location to stay in Matera! If this is your first visit to Matera, bring a satnav or a decent map. The street signs in the modern town are dreadful, and we spent nearly an hour driving round completely lost.

The property is located in the historic area and has amazing views at its doorstep. The rooms were immaculate. The staff was friendly and was very accommodating to our special requests.

This is a fantastic boutique hotel. The room was so comfortable. It has the most comfortable bed we’ve experienced in Italy. Clean, modern rooms in a gorgeous historical setting. The staff was so kind and helpful. They offer a shuttle service from a parking lot outside of town that made things so much easier. Highly recommend.

Great hotel in the heart of sassi

Fantastic hotel located in what used to be cave houses. Great location in Sassi and amazing view of the gorge. Very much appreciated the directions to free parking at the university and the complimentary hotel shuttle which arrived quickly and made parking easy and stress free. Friendly and helpful staff who provided a map of where to go and all major sights which are within walking distance. Some lovely restaurants also close by. Great mini bar and fridge with good selection of drinks and snacks and inexpensive. Only slight negative would be that the bathroom could do with a bit of TLC but despite this is very clean. Would stay again and fully recommend.

This is the place to stay for a beautiful view of the canyon and a quiet stay! The room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast delicious! Very cool to stay in a cave! The shuttle from the free parking area was very convenient and the staff helpful and friendly. Hoping to visit and stay again!

Never stayed in a cave before! Enchanting place, right in the best part of Sassi di Matera- good restaurants nearby within a short walk. Staff were really helpful, friendly and approachable; giving us a map and highlighting a trail around the town. The free shuttle came and picked us up from Matera Central station and dropped us at the hotel all within 15 minutes and dropped us off at the end of our stay. Lovely coffee and buffet breakfast. The cave our room was in was huge, modern and had all the facilities you would expect in Italy. A unique stay in Matera- would definitely recommend

This was one of the most amazing stays I have ever had. Staff super helpful and WhatsApp greetings as soon as I booked explaining parking etc which I appreciated very much. You are based right on the edge of Matera but close to the heart. Enjoy your stay it is amazing.

Staff was terrific. Checkin was smooth and easy. We parked in the open lot and the hotel shuttle delivered us to the hotel. We were traveling with our daughter and had reserved a large bedroom with a mezzanine floor. The rooms design (modern) married perfectly with the historic surroundings.

This hotel in my opinion is a hidden gem. We had the best 3 nights stay in this hotel.we loved the location and absolute dreamy views.There were plenty of restaurants etc within a short walking distance, but our location was not affected by the noise it was so quiet and relatively secluded. The free shuttle service which was super organised. our spotlessly clean cave bedroom was very big, freshly decorated, modern and equipped with hairdryer, kettle with coffee etc and tv and Wi Fi. Now the biggest selling point which I believe the hotel should shout about more was our bathroom. It was amazing, it had a Lage recessed cave bath, with a top of the range spa shower. The bath / spa shower was like a very large private cave hot tub which lit up in different glowing colours when you selected the controls. It felt very luxurious indeed. We enjoyed a nice glass of local wine while relaxing in it. In our own little spa. Breakfast was plentiful, tasty and of very good quality and we sat there on the balcony eating and enjoying the stunning views. The staff were very friendly and helpful.I would strongly recommend this hotel.we also booked an ape (tuk tuk) ride with a guide to see the local area sights without getting sore feet and it was amazing and highly recommended. Thank you so much for making our visit so magical team you are a credit to matera

very nice design, good service great experience

Très centrale pour marcher dans Sassi. Le shuttle est très accessible et nécessaire puisqu'on ne peux pas circuler en voiture. Le stationnement est grand et gratuit. Bonne sélection au petit déjeuner. La chambre était cependant très humide puisqu'il y avait un trou dans la grotte dans la chambre.

We have never been to a more unique place than Matera. Our hotel was in the "sossi" area so you need a shuttle in which is easy to arrange with the hotel. They upgraded our room . Never stayed in a cave before. So modern and exceptional.

I had a very pleasant stay at Basiliani Hotel. The staff was amazing! Roberto took the time to show me all the key highlights of things to see when I checked in and drew everything out on a map for me. He also helped me with dinner reservations. The hotel room was very quiet and cozy.

This place was great. Off the beaten path and a bit more modern than it maybe should have been it worked fine for us. The room was large and clean and breakfast was great, complete with excellent cappuccino.

Simply fantastic and exceeded all expectations... the location is absolutely fantastic... with unblocked views to Matera and the gorge... comfortable rooms very well equipped. Easy parking with shuttle service. Very friendly staff. Very comfortable rooms and a huge sexy shower. All amenities are walking distance. 100% satisfied.

Matera is such a unique town as is staying in a "cave hotel" in one of the Sassi's. The hotel has been tastefully done, keeping the feel of a cave but with all the midern amenities you could want. The location is perfect, situated in a quiet area right on the gorge. Perfect all around!

Magic!

Bellissimo!! We slept in a cave!! Beautifully stylish cave with all the modern cave people comforts ... shower in a glass cube was super fun! Staff super friendly! Don't pull the red cord next to the shower (i wanted to turn off the shower light, it actually does so automatically) I did and the receptionist came running..it's apparently an alarm!! I'll totally stay here again if I'm ever back in this magical town.

The hotel staff was very proactive sending us emails on how to arrive and where to park. They offer a free shuttle and picked us up from our parking since you are not allowed to park in the pedestrian zone. Check in was quick and our room was amazing. It was right along the ravine with an excellent view. Easy walking access to the sassi. Breakfast had a good variety and staff were very attentive.

Location location location. If you book a trip to Matera, staying in the sassi is a must. This hotel has very nice and helpful staff who puts together a tasty fortifying breakfast for you. The room is ample and clean. I would definitely stay here again.

An authentic experience

It was a nice and unusual hotel in a cave. The service was good and they pick you up and send you to the train station or bus pick up point if you call in advance. The location of the hotel gives you a stunning view of the caves in the day but it’s a bit remote from the main town square.

Awesome location, clean, helpful, modern CAVE

The staff were extremely helpful friendly and breakfast was perfect. Our view of the park and caves, with a full moon, was magical. The Basiliani puts you right in the original Sassi experirience but is super clean and modern. We loved walking out our door into the old Sassi Matera. The staff will deliver you to and from free parking- fast and easy... included- just let them know

Great hotel in an amazing city

Matera is an amazing place and the Basiliani Hotel is in the heart of the sassi, ideally located to explore the area and close to a number of good restaurants. The rooms are unusual and very comfortable.

Great hotel and fun experience. Staff went beyond expectations to help with pick up and drive to/from hotel back to car. Only issue was walkway construction which required a long walk from room to hotel lobby. I’m sure it will be completed soon!

What an amazing hotel!

I really can't say enough nice things about this place. The staff was so friendly and helpful in every respect - from helping us to and from our vehicle, tips and pointers on great sites to see and restaurants in the area, and they put on an incredible breakfast with fresh fruits, meats, cheeses. The hotel room was immaculate - fun and comfortable furniture, plenty of space, warm, quiet, just absolutely perfect. I highly recommend this place for your stay in the Sassi.

Great time in ancient time

Great location, excellent service, from picking us up where we had to park our car to giving us advice on where to eat, to what to visit in the area.

Good location for the historic centre and with amazing views (not from cave itself because there are no windows but standing on little terrace directly outside of cave). The staff are friendly and helpful and will drive to/from car parking. Breakfast all ok with fresh fruits, yogurt, croissants and etc etc. Staying in a cave is an experience rather than a pleasure. All a little damp smelling and poorly ventilated with patches of damp/mildew, particularly in the bathroom where the walls were moldy and the sanitary ware badly stained (from damp we thought as it had clearly been cleaned). We also disliked the bed-covers that had quite evidently not been changed between guests and which we removed immediately. The sheets themselves were all clean. A newish place with lots of potential but with some teething problems perhaps. The ventilation does need sorting. There is aircon and also mechanical ventilation in the bathroom (albeit at low level and therefore ineffective) but it was nevertheless both stuffy and damp.

The location and view were spectacular and the entire hotel was built into rock, cave like, which is in sync with the history of Matera where the inhabitants lived in caves at one time. Breakfast was good. There was a minimum number of staff so the desk area was very quiet. They were very efficient at getting us to and from the car park area with a free shuttle.

Nice hotel with large rooms in the caves and close by to all the historic sights of matera. Opt to get picked up by the porter in his electric vehicle from where you leave your car. He will take care of your cases over the very uneven cobbled paths nearby the hotel.

A well situated hotel for the sights of Matera

A well situated hotel with very helpful and friendly staff. The room was large and clean. There is no onsite parking but the hotel were more than happy to collect us from the nearby multi-storey car park. Breakfast was plentiful and varied. All in all a good find and recommended.

Great hotel in Matera with fantastic views and in a very quiet part of the old town but within a short walk to good choice of bars and restaurants. Modern furnishings in the room and all mod cons including air con, minibar, safe etc. Breakfast choice good and efficiently serviced throughout. Free hotel transport to and from car / car park provided whenever required. Overall excellent.

Above and beyond

The service here was amazing. Firstly this is an amazing location with 360 degree views of the Matera cave houses. Couldn’t find a better location. The staff were amazing. We were shown the room, and the tourist highlights on a map. Unfortunately my wife tripped and broke her ankle. They drove us to the hospital and made sure we were in the right place and explained to staff what had happened. The next day they drove us back and obtained a wheel chair. Well above and beyond what you would expect from hotel staff. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Excellent service in an incomparable location

We received excellent service in a great location (the view to Murgia park is incredible). Both we and the kids enjoyed the room. The breakfast was also the best during our 8-day trip in southern Italy both in terms of choice and produce as well as efficiency of the staff. Just one point for improvement: the piece of furniture on the second level of our room (on the side of the stairs) is not really suitable for small children as it consists of open shelves. This can be appealing in terms of design, but does not make for a safe space for the little ones. Except for this, we can only recommend Basiliani.
